At one time he was viewed as an *** kiss and a try hard. That culture is dead and the try hard culture is the standard. When working hard and doing things right is viewed as a negative by teammates the culture is trash. He’s now the face of the program and his work ethic is trickling down.
I remember when he was a freshman and made a few blunders like trying to field a punt that maybe he shouldn’t have because it was headed over the sidelines. A number of fans said he wasn’t a UM caliber player. I disagreed and thought he wasn’t making boneheaded mistakes, he making an effort to turn a punt rolling out of bounds into a 10 or 15 yard gain. It didn’t seem like much but he was giving 100% effort and was willing to take a hard hit and sacrifice his body to advance the football. Maybe he wasn’t the most talented guy, but he had the right mentality and work ethic. He just needed more reps and eventually he’d find a place on the field. I was worried he wouldnt get that chance as coaches might value pure athleticism over effort. You can’t teach heart or natural instincts. As a high school coach of mine once said, "if they don’t bite as a puppy, they aren’t going to bite."
I thought the fans were missing what he brought to the table- but if it was as you indicated and his own teammates were clowning him for his heart, then the culture was indeed broken beyond repair. Can’t imagine being on a team where a player gets made fun of for trying too hard.
