rb rotation with lyle

There will come a time this year when someone else gets banged up. You can NEVER have enough RBs. Lyle being back is GREAT, he lets the others rest, he’s perfect change of pace. This bye week for him to get a little more healthy is awesome. Lyle is going to have a big game vs UL

Nothing personal but I’ve been reading this for like 3 years now

Anyone ever consider we run tight splits and keep things between the tackles and give our OL help from the TEs because we actually aren’t a great run blocking OL?

Or do we think Mirabal and Mario are elite coaches that also don’t know the strengths and weaknesses of their OL and have Dawson consistently call plays that go against what we are good at?

Genuinely asking
I'm late to the party but I think it is at least worth pointing out that Mario and Dawson have never had a true game-breaking outside running back during their tenure. Lyle is supposedly some of that, but we sure haven't seen it yet.

I would certainly hope that if someone like Brashard had planning running back for us or we had someone more like Kevin Riley in the backfield that we would try to make more of an effort to get them on the perimeter. And no, I don't count Henry Parrish as that type of player.

I love Mark Fletcher and Charmar Brown more than I love myself, but stretching them out doesn't feel like it plays to their strengths.

I could be completely wrong though and Mario just loves the ground and pound or our big guys don't move as well on the perimeter.

I’m with you here

Lyle has a lot of hype and I’m cool with it. He was an outstanding high school running back

I think just in general I’m good with our overall approach and hope that Lyle can add a wrinkle. There won’t be any wholesale changes in this offense but it doesn’t really need any imo. Slight wrinkles can go a long way

I’ve said quite a few times with this Jojo/Lyle stuff for our specific team right now, I’ll take Lyle if I had to pick one

He could REALLY help us in this stretch where we need to save Fletch/Brown for the playoffs (hopefully)

"Best RB on the team" is Mark Fletcher based on results going back to last season.

Lyle is the most explosive back on the roster but aside from a few plays where he was shot out of a cannon, the production just isn't there up to now.

UF: 7 touches, 19 yards
FAMU: 6 touches, 40 yards
Ball State: 11 touches, 71 yards
USF: 6 touches, 104 yards
VT: 3 touches, 19 yards
Cal: 2 touches, 4 yards
LOU: DNP
FSU: 1 touch, 6 yards
Duke: 1 touch, 1 yard
GT: DNP
Wake: 8 touches, 118 yards
Syracuse: 3 touches, 5 yards
Iowa State: 10 touches, 32 yards
Notre Dame: 5 touches, 11 yards
Florida State: 8 touches, 27 yards

The problem with Lyle is that he is too hesitant on our standard runs. He really is an outside zone runner that needs room to cut upfield.

Fletcher and CB are not as explosive, but they are gritty, grind out what you can and then if something opens, get rolling downhill. They always going to get positive yards.

I’m guessing running too much outside zone wears our OL batteries down much faster than our traditional tight sets straight up attack do and the tight sets allows us to wear the opposing defenses down more that way.

We won’t be able to just use 2 RBs this year, especially if we want to go deep in the playoffs. We need a 3rd rb to step up and Lyle should be that guy, but how do we marry up his strengths to the rest of the offense as a change of a pace that is not obvious to the defense?

And where does that leave Pringle? Granted it was BC, but he looked explosive and decisive - I’d like to see him get more carries in the 2nd half of the season.

I am in wait and see mode on Lyle. Not necessary (for me) to make any declarations. As for what I saw vs FSU, i agree. I didn’t like it and i believe it hurt the rhythm of the offense. Brown and Fletcher fall forward for a bruising 3 yards at least almost every time, even when it doesn’t look like it should. I will take it a step further. No Lyle in that game I believe the score doesn’t get close. But lots of season left so lets see what Lyle can do.

Small sample size but can't remember one touch he's had this year (or going all the way back to the WF game last year) that justifies him being RB1 for ND, or receiving any carries over Fletcher or Brown. We might need to come to grips with Lyle just not being all that great.

Vs P4 Teams - Lyle has now has 43 carries in 9 games

Lyle's 5 longest runs are:

61 yds vs WF
18 yds vs WF
11 yds vs WF
10 yds vs WF
9 yds vs WF

No one can remember any good Lyle carries outside of Wake Forest....because there are none.

Also - Fletcher's longest run last year (30 yds) & highest ypc ever (9.2) were also in the WF game.

But I'm sure that doesn't mean anything 🤷‍♂️

Edit: typo 13 personnel = 11 ackshully my bad

Didn't count 2 garbage time runs end of first half and end of game. Nor any of Beck's runs as they were all scrambles.

Successful run is defined by: 50%+ yards to go gained on 1st down., 70%+ yards to go gained on 2nd, 100%+ yards to go gained on 3rd & 4th.

27 runs. 12/27 successful runs (44.44%). 0 successful runs after the Lofton hold up 28-3 (we did accept the offsides on 4th & 1 and we got the first on the run).

By Personnel Grouping:
  • 11
    • 12/27 runs
    • 6/12 successful
    • 8/27 runs
    • 3/8 successful
  • JUMBO (anything with #76 and/or #46 in)
    • 6/27 runs
    • 3/6 successful
  • 12
    • 1/27 runs
    • 0/1 successful
By level of Condensed (some of these are judgement calls, 5 of the condensed had 1 WR split out decently wide, but not sure I'd call them "uncondensed"):
  • Condensed
    • 15/27 runs
    • 7/15 successful
  • Uncondensed
    • 11/27
    • 4/11 successful
  • Spread
    • 1/27
    • 1/1 successful
By gap run in (am using what looked to be the gap the play ended up going, not where it looked to be designed to go in, which is tough to measure with duo):
  • A-gap
    • 6/27
    • 2/6 successful
  • B-gap
    • 10/27
    • 5/10 successful
  • C-gap & more Outside
    • 11/27
    • 5/11 successful
By RB:
  • Fletcher
    • 11 runs
    • 4/11 successful runs
  • Brown
    • 8 runs
    • 5/8 successful runs
  • Lyle
    • 7 runs
    • 2/7 successful runs
  • Marion
    • 1 run
    • 1/1 successful runs

Do some of yall actually read the s h i t y’all write before you hit “Post”? I swear it’s like some of y’all full too much estrogen.

Watch the garbage time Lyle carries. He maximized yards after contact. He's getting there.

This

then he got injured and the backup came in and was a huge part of our wins against two rank teams and an in-state rival
That should usually mean we should be excited when the guy the coaches thought was better than the other 2 returns. Yet little lizard brains on CIS seem to think 7 carries in which he ran the same as the other 2 means he shouldn't play.

Now remember, he was inured against ND and the coaches sent him back in there after he got taped up. This should tell you what they thought of him after camp. He's the guy. Gore said he's the guy. Everyone watching practice said he's the guy. Why are we doing this fam? Let it unfold. None of us know how good this young buck is gonna be. Lyle could very well be starting at OSU right now.

he was the guy ... he's probably better than fletcher ... but you can't deny these two performances

not to mention great pass pro ... also, guys act like this is new, injuries have produced opportunities for guys all the time ... portis and dorsey come to mind off the top ... imo fletcher earned the right to continue the rhythm he had ...

Lyle literally won the starting RB position in fall camp. What the **** are we doing here?

THIS IS A WILD way of thinking. Not directed at you because a lot of people are saying this with DMoney leading the charge. But to give everyone an update....

5 of the current Top 10 teams have switched their opening day RB:

#1 Ohio St
- CJ Donaldson started Game 1. Bo Jackson is now the starter.
#2 Miami - Jordan Lyle started Game 1. Mark Fletcher is now the starter.
#6 Oklahoma - Jovantae Barnes started Game 1. Tory Blaylock is now the starter (Barnes is out of the rotation)
#8 Alabama - Richard Young started Game 1. Jam Miller is now the starter (Young is out of the rotation)
#10 Georgia - Nate Frazier started Game 1. Chauncey Bowens is now the starter.

Planting your flag on the "Lyle started game 1 so he's without question our #1 RB" hill - acting like 1 of these 4 scenarios which happen ALL THE TIME isn't happening here is WILD to me:

1) Starter doesn't live up to their pre-season hype. They play poorly, so you go to their backup
2) Starter plays well, but the backup plays better, so the backups becomes the starter
3) Starter is a 1A/1B situation. Carries are split evenly, so who starts doesn't really matter
4) Coach makes a mistake. Happens all the time. Coach simply starts/gives too much PT to the wrong guy
