He got a lot of those 80 tackles down the field from my recollection...and he wasn't lined up in the box anywhere near as much as you are implying. Respectfully disagree.

Built like a backer but was athletic enough to cover. We didn't give up that many passes down the field anyway. RR played quite close to the line. He did play deep at times but he played close than most people want to acknoledge. And then we had Dsharp, Cmac and Spence at lb. Do you bench one of them? The next year Buchanon played more but RR still had better statd.

9er fan here. Ray Ray was with Oakland last year and then released, 9ers picked him up in November. He's had a strong preseason and was starting at ILB next to Bowman. He had a great game last night, looks to finally be clicking for him a little. IMO Carter should be moved to LB as well, they both have very similar skill sets

You only remember the half back pass from UVA and everyone on the field got fooled. Did he even play seven games that year? And you tout 2011 like our entire defense didn't look confuse and gave up yards being conservative. That was the first year of Al in the scheme was the clear indicator we were doomed. I read that article when it first came out. It was mostly based on a suspended short season but ignored his previous strong season as a sophomore.


Once again who was Ray Ray going to play in front of? Spence, Sharp or Cmac in 09? In 2010 he got more reps than Cookie and it was still Spence and Cmac. I don't care how many people saod move him to linebacker. No one ever said who would he start in front of. You had 3 all conference backers. The next year he played more and was an all conference safety. Maybe in 2011 or 2012 he could of made the move but for the years he really played (09&10) we had good lbs that he couldn't unseat as a young player. He was used the best way we could use him in order to get the best players on the field in 09 and 10. Unfortunately he was suspended in 2011 and 12.

I made it clear he rarely played. He missed a half for at least 1 game and he missed 5 games that year. That's almost 50 percent of the season and he didn't start. Ray Ray essentially is their "cover lb" in their defense...sort of like a rover...something he seems to have gotten sort of comfortable with after a few years in the league..he wouldnt have been a very good backer here...and didnt want to play it anyways.

49ers placed ILB Ray-Ray Armstrong on injured reserve with a pectoral injury, ending his season.
Armstrong surprisingly had a role this season, playing 69 snaps at inside linebacker through the first two games. Armstrong is still only 25, but will be nearing journeyman status next offseason.
