Ray Ray Armstrong sighting.

Some of us were screaming for him to be a LB from his freshman year here. I remember watching him when he was at Sanford and he always looked and played like a linebacker. He was never good in space and had no business ever being lined up at safety. They did the kid a huge disservice by insisting on him playing a position he didn't have the skill set for.

Just another example of how incompetent, clueless, and underqualified the previous staff(s) were. Better days ahead.

He basically played backer here. He lined up in the box a lot that's why he had like 80 tackles his sophomore year. We had good backers too but found a way to get him on the field. Dsharp, Cmac and Spence. He still played a lot.

He got a lot of those 80 tackles down the field from my recollection...and he wasn't lined up in the box anywhere near as much as you are implying. Respectfully disagree.

The arguments on this board on this topic were actually pretty heated during that time. He was playing center field a majority of the time.

I remember the arguments and it was exagerrated. He did play center field but not nearly as much as some imply. I recall RS even saying they felt comfortable playing him there for spread teams. Built like a backer but was athletic enough to cover. We didn't give up that many passes down the field anyway. RR played quite close to the line. He did play deep at times but he played close than most people want to acknoledge. And then we had Dsharp, Cmac and Spence at lb. Do you bench one of them? The next year Buchanon played more but RR still had better statd.

What are you talking about? Sharp? Cmac? No he didn't. I have way too many memories of Ray Ray getting burnt deep.

Haha no you don't. In 2.5 years what are the "too many memories"? Not denying he got beat but its not as often as many of you claim. How many teams killed us passing the ball from 09-11? He was a full time starter for like 1 year anyway. And Sharp and Cmac both balled their last years here. What are you talking about?

Ray Ray was used fine.

No you don't. You remember the Ohio State game.

9er fan here. Ray Ray was with Oakland last year and then released, 9ers picked him up in November. He's had a strong preseason and was starting at ILB next to Bowman. He had a great game last night, looks to finally be clicking for him a little. IMO Carter should be moved to LB as well, they both have very similar skill sets

I root for Ray Ray because i think he wasn't put in a position to succeed while here. There's a reason why EVERYONE was saying to move him to linebacker. If they weren't saying it when he was a Frosh, they were at least saying it towards the end of his college career. Anyways, I and everyone else (except you) remember him often getting burnt deep and being out of position or taking bad angles. See below.

Once again you're exaggerating. In 2011 teams rarely went deep on us. We gave them the easy throws all the way to the endzone. You only remember the half back pass from UVA and everyone on the field got fooled. Did he even play seven games that year? And you tout 2011 like our entire defense didn't look confuse and gave up yards being conservative. That was the first year of Al in the scheme was the clear indicator we were doomed. I read that article when it first came out. It was mostly based on a suspended short season but ignored his previous strong season as a sophomore.

Once again who was Ray Ray going to play in front of? Spence, Sharp or Cmac in 09? In 2010 he got more reps than Cookie and it was still Spence and Cmac. I don't care how many people saod move him to linebacker. No one ever said who would he start in front of. You had 3 all conference backers. The next year he played more and was an all conference safety. Maybe in 2011 or 2012 he could of made the move but for the years he really played (09&10) we had good lbs that he couldn't unseat as a young player. He was used the best way we could use him in order to get the best players on the field in 09 and 10. Unfortunately he was suspended in 2011 and 12.

What did I exaggerate? I used a quote from an article and provided a link. You're the one exaggerating by suggesting that Sharp was an all conference linebacker. Ray also played 7 games in 2011 so stop exaggerating as if he didn't play at all in 2011.

All I can say is I disagree with you. I watched every down of every game during that era and he was not in the box anywhere near as much as you imply. He was used as a true safety here.

Agree to disagree I guess.

Using a quote from a hs kid on a fan sight doesn't bring much credibility to your argument. You and that quote is an exaggeration. Teams rarely went deep on us. I didn't say Ray didnt play in 2011. I made it clear he rarely played. He missed a half for at least 1 game and he missed 5 games that year. That's almost 50 percent of the season and he didn't start. Even stating all of that who should he have played in front of in 09 and 2010?

I guess but who could Ray started in front of in 2009 and 10? He could of made the switch his last 2 years but he was suspended the majority of that time. That's what I'm saying. When he really played we had good lbs and he was young.

Wasn't it Ray-Ray who wanted to play S? Besides, he wasn't going to start at LB. He wanted playing time and time available at S.

Ray Ray essentially is their "cover lb" in their defense...sort of like a rover...something he seems to have gotten sort of comfortable with after a few years in the league..he wouldnt have been a very good backer here...and didnt want to play it anyways.

Wasn't it Ray-Ray who wanted to play S? Besides, he wasn't going to start at LB. He wanted playing time and time available at S.

That is essentially what I was saying. Everyone keeps saying who should of been backer here or he was misused but no one states who he should of started in front of. Plus he performed well at safety for us. After 2010 he just kept getting suspended.

Ray-Ray Armstrong - LB - 49ers
49ers placed ILB Ray-Ray Armstrong on injured reserve with a pectoral injury, ending his season.
Armstrong surprisingly had a role this season, playing 69 snaps at inside linebacker through the first two games. Armstrong is still only 25, but will be nearing journeyman status next offseason.

Why are you so concerned about who he could have started over? It isn't about that silly man. The coaches didn't put him in a position to succeed. End of story.
