Randy Shannon was an idiot.

Today, we are here. Grateful to be a Cane, proud of our history as a program, forever indebted to those who brought us to glory. To those who tried so hard to destroy us I say, rot in **** as you watch us soar to the top again.

To the current C mafia, President Joe, all the others behind the scene who by the grace of God came together to bring us back to where we belong, THANK YOU. To coach Mario Santo Cristobal Columbus, the Soffer family, Mas Bro’s and all the rest who bleed Orange & Green, THANK YOU.

To the rest of the Cane family, enjoy the ride back to the top of the mountain. Remember one thing, we ain’t afraid no MF, we’re Canes !

47, love you Brother you are The U.

Mountain Man,

... if so, why was Gary Patterson a finalist for that position?? I remember JJ being all fired up that Patterson was going to be offered only to be surprised by Randy hiring... ineptitude and PC was more the reason
Mike Leach was dying to become the head coach at UM and was twice denied by Shalala. Shalala went with Shannon and then Golden leading us into decades of torturous to watch football. Both were disasters and we all saw what Leach did to college football. Leach would have killed it in Miami, at least breaking all NCAA records and fun to watch.

To be completely honest...Coker was an absolute clown.

I believe 100% that he was the reason/beginning of a lot of hard years for Miami football fans.

Ive had the conversation before on here....but this dude had the world in his hands. Didn't even have to work to build what he had..and ****ed it all up royally.
Totally agree. He was awful.

Crazy to think we did this twice with Randy and Manny.
I don't think it was crazy considering the organizational philosophy of the day.

And that is to say, there wasn't a cohesive, top to bottom, aligned philosophy that other programs, who became progrums, clearly put into place.

Miami, and others, got left behind.

He wasn’t a DEI hire, he was a budget hire. Randy made less to coach Miami than about a dozen players on our roster right now

According to Paul Dee, Randy Shannon had such a great interview he never bothered to call Patterson!

he gets glossed over ALOT on this board...for us that been around, he was the catalyst for the downfall...
He left Golden with just two recruits by the time he was released.

When Golden was released, most of the 2016 class hung on. When Richt retired, most of the 2019 class hung on. When Manny left, the class was small but no one recommitted.

Former OC coordinator. HEad coach of a team that went to back to back national championship games. And he could not successfully recruit wide receivers or quarterbacks. I’ve said this many times…we had just six scholarship receivers entering 2006, and only three available after starting 5-2 that season.

Feels like two very different situations despite both being first-time HCs. Randy was way more sensible than Manny.

Randy was the first former player hired, and first HC who grew up in the state of Florida since the early 1970s, first HC with professional playing-experience since Lou Saban, and was from the Jimmy Johnson ‘coaching tree’ just like Butch Davis. His defenses were ranked top 10; 5 outta the past 6 seasons. He was a bridge to the distant past and the more recent, more successful past.

Unlike Randy, Manny had been fired from a high-profile job. That Texas stint was completely ignored when he was hired. We saw that side of Diaz in the losses to Notre Dame, Clemson, and Wisconsin (twice). That second Wisconsin loss is important, because it was the same staff in both games whilst the second team was much worse (13-1 compared to 8-5); yet, even with the extra familiarity—we lost by 25 more points than the previous year.

One of the reasons that happened is because Diaz is only good at game planning and adjustments at halftime; cannot adjust on the fly. Manny isn’t good at making guys better day by day thru practice. He cared about media perception thinking highly of him than actually being elite at his job.

Besides the on-field football aspects, he was awful at recruiting, the rhetoric, passion, and persuasion required, and the actual evaluations too which is even more important & harder to acquire. Can only give him credit for Greg Rousseau.

We were actually in a much better shape when Richt stepped down compared to when he took the job. Once Golden’s recruits left, the inaccuracies and inattentiveness of Diaz’s recruiting/development really showed itself in year 3 with that 35 to 3 loss to Wisconsin. For us to hire the DC presiding over that beatdown was insanity.

Diaz benefitted greatly from Golden’s and Dorito’s recruiting — Sheldrick Redwine, all three of the ‘16 LBs were committed before he took the job, as was Joe Jackson, Michael Jackson, Richard McIntosh, Kendrick Norton, Jaquan Johnson, Chad Thomas, Anthony Moten, Trent Harris, and Corn Elder — they left him real guys there. Richt also brought in an elite DLine coach that covered up some of Diaz’s flaws.

Coming off our best season in over a dozen years, 2017, Diaz didn’t sign one linebacker in the class of 2018. Then less than a year later we hired him to be our head coach lmao.

With hindsight, we now know that Manny’s neglectful recruiting and awful development created an enormous amount of problems — lack of toughness, poor attention to detail, lowered standards, etc — for Mack Brown and James Franklin as well who were both effectively fired within two years of Diaz leaving. At the time, Mack Brown’s falloff might have been easier prescribed to Muschamp leaving and old age.

Both weren’t right for the job, but Diaz was way worse of a choice imo.
Again, I think they were all symptoms.

Each was a freyed thread of a tattered sweater.

We didn't realize it at the time, but their shortcomings were magnified by lack of institutional support.

Watch the Elko-to-Diaz 3 year transition....👀

Judging by his career opportunities and decisions after he left Miami tells you all you need to know about how in over his head he was

I mean, I get it, he wasn’t cut out to be a head coach and could be super awkward with people (seen this in person myself), but I don’t get the hate.

At the end of the day he’s a cane trying to make a living. The anger should be directed towards those who created a rushed and unprofessional hiring process that lacked the proper review of available candidates, as well as the lack of strong commitment to the football program by the administration.

Again, I understand that he wasn’t HC material, but you can’t blame him for taking the job. Sure, he made mistakes while he was here, but he was doomed to failure due to the lack of experience and the lack of administration support.

Mario was giving the same vibes at first. Talking tough about discipline and whatnot meanwhile we are constantly doing dumb ****, committing undisciplined penalties etc

Just comes across hypocritical

100% BS 🧢… Mario always encouraged players to be themselves on the field and never hated on or tried to stifle their personalities. There isn’t a team that doesn’t commit penalties and laying out his philosophy especially when asked as the new Head Coach trying to save a shxx fb program (at the time) has nothing to do with “talking tough”.

I really do hope the days of hiring first time head coaches are behind UM. This program is not the one where you will learn on the job. Coker, Shannon and Diaz were all bad hires.

And we kept hiring assistants from staff that failed in Miami....

Manny was like a completely incompetent hybrid of past coaching decisions

Randy was cheap and lazy failed DC regime. Then we went to Temple and found another moron.

Then we decided to really go all in and poach a guy (translate: pay a stupid amount of money) we already had from a past regime from Temple

The day we hired Manny, in that context, a piece of me died

And we paid 4 million to buy Manny out from Temple of all places....

...you really, really have to try hard to be as stupid as our administration had been for 2 decades from 2003

I’m not as hard on Coker as others because he was never supposed to be in that position anyway. All the holes in the Swiss cheese lined up for him to become the HC, but he was never going to be the guy to keep it going. Hard to expect a guy to accomplish more than he’s capable of accomplishing.

It’d be like putting your best shotput athlete in the 4 x 100 and then complaining that he was too slow.
