Randy Shannon vs Manny Diaz

If you're going there, then why are we not comparing how Diaz's defenses did at Texas compared to Shannon's at UCF? Isn't the more logical comparison how Diaz's defenses did at Miami compared to how Shannon's defenses did at Miami?

That would make sense if I wanted Diaz as head coach during his time at Texas. Point is Diaz is currently a better DC than Randy Shannon is, and Shannon became our HC in 2007,10 years ago.

Shannon's D wasn't aggressive at all. We rarely blitzed or played any exotic packages.

It worked great with overwhelming talent. When that talent started to slip it got exposed.

Well we didn’t use defensive tackles to cover the opponents fastest WR like in the Dorito era. You are correct though Randy didn’t blitz much but he had a downhill aggressive based package. Still I am trying to separate Manny’s scheme as different from the likes of Schiano, Randy, Lubick, Wannstedt, Davis, etc.

This argument is akin to "they both had the same director-level jobs, and because one was promoted to CEO and failed, it stands to reason the other will fail as CEO."

It's called leadership. Some people have it and some people don't. Randy also didn't have nearly the connections throughout the coaching world as Diaz does, which will be evidenced by his OC hire.

Seriously doubt Patrick Nix is on the short list.

Randy was the man in his time. Diaz is the man today!

Whoever brought up Craig krenzel jesus man that actually made me lmao.. hindsight is 20/20 but man with the athletes we had, to have that guy running around like hes cam Newtow.. we gave that game away!

Randy ran a great D but dont ask him to buy the groceries. The guy was a brick wall as a CEO. You guys remember him taking the names off the jerseys?? Cmon man we Miami!!

Diaz appears to living out his dream and isnt gonna let some stupid like friendships ruin his opportunity. I kinda like the his pops was a politician cause you know he learned at a young age feelings and business dont mix.

The question is about the qualifications of Randy in 2006 vs Diaz in 2018.

So far he hasn't touched a coach on the defensive side. All he did was get rid of Richt's people.

All we can do is hope and pray...that manny will bring da bagz! **** yea!

I can't believe this is a legit thread.... TF is wrong with some of you??

I wasn't crazy about Shannon as HC, but I find this disgraceful.
For all his faults, he contributed alot to the program as a player, a
champion no less, and as an assistant coach.
He should have never been a HC, that's on the school prez and AD
for being short-sighted dimwits.
Essentially calling him a black-****** by likening him to this Radio character
is low-life I wouldn't expect from a fellow Cane fan.

randy's defenses couldn't figure out how to cover tight ends or the flats.

This is gonna be a long off season When we have vets posting dumb **** like this

Here's what gets me...the initial fan reaction to the Diaz hire was justifiably bad. It was obviously a lazy hire of a guy with a thin resume, made without any search whatsoever. A day later, Manny fires the offensive staff, gets his talk game going, and like a battered woman thinking her husband has finally changed, the retarded fan base is all on board. Not me.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me 5 times, shame on me. I wouldn't trust this administration to walk and chew gum at the same time let alone hire a head football coach.

Randy was choice 5 in the list of not worse. No one wanted the job. He was given it by default.

Manny was choice number 1.

Manny was choice number 1 because the incompetent administration didn't so much as take 24 hours to consider any other candidate.

Somebody explain to me how Diaz is a more attractive hire than Shannon was in 2006. What am I missing?

The similarities:

-Both Miami DCs
-Both "Miami guys" (a meaningless quality)
-Both immediately replaced a failed head coach
-Neither had any head coaching experience (let alone P5 head coaching experience)
-Neither had any other P5 HC offers when hired

The differences:

-Randy won NCs as both a player and coach at Miami, Manny did not
-Randy had a reputation for being a strong recruiter in the area, Manny does not
-Randy coached multiple first round picks at Miami, Manny has not

The difference: Shannon was neither innovative nor the CEO type. You have to be really good at one or the other if you don’t have both. In Manny, I see an innovative-ish coach who adapts well. Let’s see how he fares as a CEO, but he probably learned on that front from Manny Sr.
