QUICK TAKE: How The Lizards Game Plan Against J Will

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for them to blitz if they think our OL is that bad. In that case it would make more sense to drop more into coverage and let their front four beat our OL. If they blitz a ton we can counter that and don't have to pick them apart through the air

For those of you geniuses thinking they’re gonna blitz all night, I have a question:

Why? Have you seen our OL and think that they are going to overpower their front 4 so badly that they’ll need all kinds of extra blitzes to get to our QB? My guess is they won’t blitz often at all. You’re game planning for an accurate QB with a weak OL, you rush 4 and drop the rest into coverage.
Lol seconds apart on that 100% agree if they think we have a really bad OL there is absolutely no sense in blitzing

If they're smart, they drop back in a ton of zone early in the game. Enos will surely have man coverage beaters set up, but the true test of a 1st time QB in a rough environment is processing looks.

If Enos is as shrewd as we hope, he comes out and tries to blow the top off that zone immediately. Make JW feel more comfortable via savage aggression. We trust our defense against their questionable OL and inaccurate QB, no? Then, see what we've got with our interior OL and draws, counters, misdirections. Settle in. And, let's see what happens.

Yep, and that’s pretty much how we’ve been treated the past few years and our OL seems to be weaker than ever at this point. I hope they do blitz, it’ll give him open receivers.

Blitzes and late shifts.

Absolutely. They will try to rattle a young offensive line. I agree with other posters that the interior should be sound from a talent standpoint but playing with poise is a different aspect of the game and penalties that put you in first and second and long scenarios are a quick way to demoralize a young offense that I believe will be designed to put opponents in bad positions utilizing tempo... although we do have my preferred option as the field general.

A lot of people are saying Blitz, which makes sense...

But if you really want to confuse a young QB, you drop 6/7 into Zone coverage, the more looks you throw at'em the more hesitant they'll be in letting go of the ball.

You show them a loaded box pre snap & then drop LB's in coverage & force him to come off his first initial read while speeding up his decision making & they usually make mistakes.

However it boils down to Todd Grantham's philosophy, he trusts his DB's to cover one on one so they don't play too much Zone, they play most offenses pretty much straight up & bring lots of pressure off the edge.

The key for our offense is to keep them off balance & the way to slow them down is the run the ball straight at'em. Go watch their games last year vs Kentucky, UGA & Mizzou in all 3 games those teams ran for over 180yds a piece (Kentucky - 303yds, UGA 189yds & Mizzou 221yds).

Their pass Defense was good last year, they didn't allow a single 300yd passer all season. Now conversely neither did we, in fact not a single QB we faced last year throw for even 230yds against us, the most passing yards we allowed all season was 222yds @ Toledo.

But, UF's defense did give 250yds to Drew Lock & Mizzou, I think Mizzou & Kentucky's game plan was the most successful in beating UF's defense. UF also lost their best pass rusher to the NFL this year, so they don't have the same depth on the DLine they had last year.

This game will come down to turnovers, if we win the turnover battle while also protecting the ball on Offense, we'll win.

Their fans think that our OL is so bad that they can rush a steady 4 and mix in some blitzes. I saw them talking about how all they have to do is take away our TE’s so that Jarren can’t dump off to them.

I would put their best defensive lineman against our true freshman left tackle and overload that side. I wouldn't do all out blitzes, I'd occassionally bring an LB or CB in.

Shut down the run game, make a RS rookie freshman beat you by making the throws.

I think JW needs to rely on short throws, check down to his TE's. That'll force the defense to cheat up more, setting up an occassional deep ball. Our WR's are good enough to risk 50-50 balls, especially if Jarren comes out throwing strikes.

I’d pay someone to beat Jordan and Mallory as close to death as possible because I have absolutely no answer for those two

It's certainly fair to question our o line but I think it's fair to assume Enos will scheme to consistently help our line block with an extra man. Grantham is blitz happy but jarren sees an aggressive defense in practice every day. If the **** corners play on islands with our receivers jarren can make the throws, his post and corner routes from practice vids were lasers. If the o line and special teams hold up we're gonna smoke these fools.
It's all about processing time. We don't know that about Jarren yet. It's not something that's shown in those practice vids. Those lasers he threw on posts and corner routes were longer developing plays. Also from the vids, it's not clear that the oline can hold that long, especially the tackles. There's only so much you can scheme, if the WR don't have time to get into their routes. Early on, he going to have to make short drops and get the ball out of hands quickly until the game slows down for him.

Blitzing uncontrollably against a 2 TE set and our WR talent with **** poor safeties is a good way to get beat by a sub par or inexperienced QB. All QBs know to throw where the blitz comes from and it’ll leave someone open or make a crease for a big play.

Worst thing they could do to us (from a Miami perspective) is be successful getting pressure with 4-5 guys and force us to throw into a zone on the backend show blitz and randomly drop guys into the flats, and us not be able to run the ball into a 6-7 man front.

I hope Grantham is his normal self and blitzes in any and all situations because we’ll gash them enough to stay in the game at the very least. If you’re gonna blitz you better have good safety play (hence why Manny has been very good at Miami thus far) and they just don’t have that this year.

I would assume they send pressure or slant/stunt up front.
I would also think the DBs will be squatting on the short/intermediate throws until they get beat

If we play scared we have no chance. Enos made his decision now ride with him. Prep him, spend all the time needed showing him what they can do and make sure he’s sharp with his decision making. Most importantly let him know you trust him and call the game accordingly.

If I'm Grantham stack the box use specialty blitzes on 1st and 2nd down make jarren guess where the blitz is coming from. And on 3rd max cover send 3 maybe 4 depending on distance

Now that Miami has QB1 selected for G1, how best would the lizards game plan against him?

My thoughts:

- Film is non-existent; HS film even more so as useless
- Coaches will reach out to network for anyone's first hand thoughts on J Will's mental/personality tendancies
- Knowing we have a DIII-level (barely) OL, they will try to pressure and rattle him with aggressive upfront rush and blitz packages
- Watch his comfort (or lack thereof) placing the handoffs where they need to be for RBs
-Watch his command of shuttle/flip pass if Enos runs those plays
- CBs will demand he beat them with his arm until he proves he can
- Crowd will be louder than usual during Miami's O drives

Overall, if J Will can perform, advantage Miami because until the tape gets long enough, Ds won't have much to go on. I suspect a ton of Enos' first year Arky footage is being watched right now in GVille.

Your thoughts?

They know nothing
