Qb update days before a starter is decided

Two weeks into camp, UM officials who have observed practice reiterated today that nobody has clearly distanced himself in the quarterback race.

"Tate Martell was off with his accuracy Thursday, and his accuracy has been the big question since his arrival from Ohio State.

One screen pass nearly got picked off and there was another throw that went nowhere near the receiver. One UM official who has watched him for two weeks said he’ll have a couple good passes, then a couple bad passes, and his passes sometimes sail or wobble.

One UM person said you can’t accept plays like one from Martell early in camp, when he threw a pass directly to Scott Patchan at the goal line for an interception.

On the plus side, he’s elusive, throws well on the run, can adjust his release when being chased (sometimes throwing sidearm when needed) and is smart and well-prepared and thinks like a coach — which Dan Enos wants in his quarterback. His mechanics and accuracy have improved from early in the spring, thanks to Martell’s willingness to take coaching from Enos."

In his defense, he’s been under constant pressure and has done a good job escaping the pressure on some plays. And on Thursday, multiple center snaps to him landed on the ground, which isn’t his fault.

But you would like more consistent accuracy, especially on sideline throws and vertical routes.

One UM person said N’Kosi Perry probably is best suited of the three to run Enos’ offense in the sense that he has a good arm, improved accuracy, and mobility and does a good job of hiding the ball, a deceptive element important in an offense that features reverses and jet sweeps.

The concern with Perry remains turnovers. You can’t have plays like one in the scrimmage Sunday where he dropped back to pass and the ball simply fell out of his hands for a turnover.

Perry made some really nice throws Thursday but also a couple of poor ones. He’s become more mature and pays close attention when Enos talks, as he should.

Jarren Williams remains the Canes wild card. One player this week conveyed to friends that he believes Williams has been the best of the three quarterbacks in camp, but that’s subjective and there’s no telling what Enos and Manny Diaz are thinking.

Williams again made some very impressive throws on Thursday. He’s got good size, a good arm and has gotten himself in better shape. At his best, he throws a nice deep ball.

But his accuracy isn’t elite level, either, and his passes can hang in the air sometimes. He’s also been playing catchup after not putting in as much work as coaches would have wanted last season.

He might be the most talented passer of the group but he’s also the least experienced."
Brimming with confidence I am!

On a lighter note, Perry's "become more mature and pays close attention when Enos talks" quote is the funniest thing I've read in a while

Manny knows, and part of the fun is to keep us guessing, and talking about the U.....if we did not have this....What the **** would we be talking about on and on and on?....

tellin you man. that cat is fuggin sneaky. telling us no clear cut leader then he pulls a butler from mr. deeds on us

Most telling statement of the entire article:

"One UM person said N’Kosi Perry probably is best suited of the three to run Enos’ offense in the sense that he has a good arm, improved accuracy, and mobility and does a good job of hiding the ball, a deceptive element important in an offense that features reverses and jet sweeps."

Perry is in the lead but by a scintilla. He has to solidified it this weekend at the scrimmage.

After reading the article it's pretty clear Jarren is running 3rd in the race too.

I’ve said for awhile that I’d be shocked if it’s not Tate or Kosi.

i have been pro tate from the beginning but as a canes fans you have to be concerned with this situation. three guys none of whom appear to be good enough to be our starter. clearly not what anyone would have wanted or expected.

these are the kinds of posts that drive me nuts man. who said at ANY point or even implied we have "three guys none of whom appear to be good enough to be our starter." ?? come on dude. who's to say all 3 aren't good enough and they just want the best one? odd, we have some pessimistic *** fans my goodness

Should have all 3 QB's in on the first play. Do a double or triple reverse with the QB's pitching it to each other and then the last one throws it. Gaytors will totally be confused.

So will our offense .....if we did that garbage

My biggest worry with Kosi aside from the TO's is he tends to lock onto his first read, which kind of defeats the purpose of Enos's offense that has guys running everywhere on the field to an open spot. If he ends up being the pick he probably improved on that.

not nearly as good as the 4 TD passes and a 3 TD down comeback win vs. FSU. but hey pick whatever side you like friend.

Why would you go there? Who said I picked a side?

This is what you said:
i feel that may be the case, but not confident at all. then again my feeling changes daily. f*ck as i typed that i feel like perry will win the job again

seriously though, the FSU comeback makes me feel like he's the man ultimately

I was just pointing out that if that FSU comeback (which was largely generated by the defense, really) makes you feel like he should be the starter, does the other side of that game make you feel like he's disqualified?

I'm disregarding last year, or at least trying to. Jon was unqualified and immature for the job, Richt didn't seem to have control of the situation, I believe Manny when he says "fresh start".

I'm just watching and waiting, and keeping in mind that it's neither the coaches job to tell us the truth 100% of the time, nor to their or our benefit for them to do that. So you gotta take every report, quote, stat sheet, etc with a grain of salt and try to read between the lines. I honestly have no clue what to make of it all right now, which is why I don't say much about it, I just listen.

I was just asking you a question. Until proven otherwise, I have faith in this coaching staff to pick the right guy and then coach him and the rest of the team up and prepare them well enough to put them in a position to succeed. That is my only rooting interest.

All three have issues , on and off the field. Total knuckleheads. Tate does the most as for work and playbook , but he’s a knucklehead too.

Maturity is lacking from the group, which is concerns me.

So our QB situation is dire and UM officials are leaking this to a reporter to put this in his widely read column about the U for everybody, including UF staff to read.

Sounds legit.

Yeah right.

I'm depressed folks.

Not really. Show me a college team with a fierce QB competition like this where one emerges with no mistakes.

Maybe, but there was no way that we should have been in need of a comeback to begin with.

Let's pick one and announce it publicly before UF. We need to give one of these 3 some confidence by announcing and give them all the reps between now and UF. Can't keep babying these guys or be scared if one transfers off. If one or two guys decide to transfer, then so be it and they weren't cut out to be a Miami Hurricane.
I'm sure they will know after this weekend and announce it to the team. Next week is the start of Florida preparation and the starting QB will get most if not all the reps with the 1's.

I don't want Manny to announce it to the public. There's no reason to give any information to Florida prior to the game. Let them guess and prepare for all 3 QBs. Florida will be looking at Alabama and Arkansas film trying to figure out what Enos is going to run. That gives us an advantage.

On the flip side, Manny knows Mullen's offense well and Mullen knows Manny's defense well. No advantage to either side there.

Scrimmage 2 has to decide who is going to be the Starter. Have to give 1 guy the Reps and the Coaching to get prepared for Florida and to improve on what they are weak on.

I say it will be KOSI.

IMO, the main thing that hurt the O-Line last year was the Musical Chairs, give the best guy the Reps, and increase coaching and let them prepare and improve from the experience and coaching.

serious question. how do you know the coaches aren't 100% set on who they're going with, and confident in that pick?

I don't know. What I do know is that there doesnt seem to be a clearcut guy who has stolen the job and ran with it from any and all reports. And if they have and the coaches are keeping it a secret.. this would be the greatest con a coaching staff has pulled since the infamous "Mike Leach fake playbook" trick he pulled on Bob Stoops and OU because they are feeding the media that a QB performs well one day and then sucks the next.

That sounds like the same **** we heard last Fall right before we got our a$$e$ handed to us by an LSU team that had a total of what..200 yards of total offense??? I'm not jumping ship but I'm going to pull back a little $$ I was going to lay on the ML on this game. Maybe ill split it 50-50 between the ML and the +7.5. LOL.
