Just saw this Miami Hurricanes ‘gunslinger’ Malik Rosier learning to bite bullet | Canes Watch

Basically Rosier said that Coley told Kaaya and him, that if there was nothing there, they should try to make a play, scramble, etc. But this staff doesn't want him to try to make a play, they want him to "Eat it. Burn it. Let’s play for a kick. Let’s play for a field goal."

Now, I can't say I really like that mentality at all. I do think taking the checkdown is good, to a certain point. I hope this doesnt decrease the amount of big plays we get in the passing game though. I don't want to be in the 3rd and 10 situations and constantly throwing to the underneath guy.

I trust Kaayas decision making,i ts the back ups that are the question marks.

You seriously took all of that in and have become worried that we'll be stuck watching check down throws over and over?

Well especially for a big difference like this between how these players are coached. If a qb is used to trying to make a play, then all of a sudden he's told not to do that, he might think a little bit too much and be more hesitant to go for the big play, thinking he shouldn't.
Now obviously Richt probably just wants them to take what they are given, and not to try anything crazy, but I also don't want to have someone emulating Alex Smith out there.

I think it's something to definitely keep an eye on.

Coley was saying that if everyone was covered you throw it anyways . Richt is saying the opposite. It should not lead to any extra unnecessary check downs.

That's a really awful interpretation of what Richt wants. I hope OP is the dummy who made that interpretation and not Rosier.

Stafford wasn't making a lot of check downs. And who tf tells Kaaya to scramble?

i feel like the "if there is nothing there" coaching suggestion applies a lot more to Rosier than it does to Kaaya

I trust BK's decision making as he doesn't force many passes. His interception percentage last year was among the best in the nation.

Richt is constantly talking about Rosier "trying to be a hero." He's used those exact words repeatedly. Rosier will scramble around like a hippy and throw it up for grabs. He forces stuff, and Richt hates that. Richt would rather punt, take a sack, or throw the ball away than throw a pick 6 that kills you. That's what he's trying to get Rosier to understand.

Please remember what we are dealing with in Rosier. The kid has almost zero experience and has a tendency to play the hero without having the experience / skills per the coaching staff. Then let's recall our OL play last year. All of it should be improved this year, but this is not a coaching staff comfortable with an entire roster of kids they did not recruit or develop and just cutting them loose to improvise.

We have the skill players where checking down can be a very good thing versus trying to force the issue. The bottom line is that your post says it all....Coley told Kaaya and Rosier to make a play whereas Richt / Brown have told Rosier to eat it. Kaaya is saavy enough now to know when its not there, its not there...HOPEFULLY the OL will be improved enough to where he will at least have the time to realize that and do something about it..

Jameis won a ship using the checkdown. 41-14 whippin on us using the check down.

We got good backs.... time to use them.

Clowns worried about our 3rd down situation with the "new philosophy" when last year Coley had us as one of the worst 3rd down teams in the country. That's with his "make a play" instructions.

Comedy.

If you're worried that we might get too far away from James Coley the playcaller's mentality then you're kinda defeating the point of any discourse on the matter. Richt wanting his QB's to be intelligent does not equal Richt dinking and dunking all day between check-downs and 3rd down sideline throwaways. There's plenty of tape on his offensive resume.

I mean when was the last time he called plays? 2005 or something like that, right? A lot can change in what kind of plays he will call. We do know he's going to be more run heavy this year. I already think Kaaya dumped it off too much last year and wasn't too willing to make big plays.

Because the offense was way too predictable. Kaaya is not a turnover qb. It's amazing what he was able to do with Coley's lack of playcalling ability
