Proposal to shorten games, slow down offenses

Reducing commercials isn’t realistic. That’s $. No one is going to mess with that.

Realistically, although I like replays and getting plays right, the current model is unsustainable. Too many plays are reviewed. They probably need to institute a replay system; like, each coach has 2 challenges per half.
Sometimes I’ll count the commercials and they can be as high as (7) plus I love those 30 second commercials they throw in there.

I get your point money talks , but if they’re shortening the game just to increase commercial flow that will hurt the game.

You can actually step away for 5 plus minutes and return and the commercials are still going.

I feel this is the hidden agenda which is fine eventually they’ll go to PPV on certain games of the week and force many away whom can’t afford $50.00 or so to watch on top of all the streaming payouts we do just watch TV now.

Watch PPV is coming

I remember when the middle class was able to purchase tickets to major bowl games and YES the Super Bowl.
It didn’t take long to force the middle class fans out for more money.

Now going to CFB games is getting very expensive NFL games are totally out of the question.
I just can’t see spending many hundreds of dollars to watch sports (1) game.

Any way sports are for the rich, if that’s what they’re pursuing so be it , the expansion of the war on middle class the engine that fuels this country and fights its wars.

Anyway just my thoughts

I cant believe some of these comments.
The Condensed Games are about 25 minutes long. Penalties and short gain plays are left out, so let’s rounded up to 30 minutes.
That’s 30 minutes of football, and you want less?

Why don’t we just lop off the last quarter or so??
It will be like that goofy “extra time” in soccer, but…. “less time”.
Games will now end between 3:38 left in the third and 10:42 to go in the fourth….so you can get to Costco on time and not miss out on those nasty food samples.

If they could find away to package it for a school, conference or ala carte, it would be nice. Imagine not having to worry about whether you can find a stream or if your carrier has the correct regional channel.

Maybe eliminate media timeouts every 5 minutes. Everyone at the stadium is forced to stand around waiting while F-150 and Home Depot commercials with subliminal messages get thrown at viewers again and again....and again.

CFB games are torture chambers at times, especially Miami ones. Miami consistently flirts with 4 hour run times that leaves you in a haze wondering if you just watched a marathon of football, advertisements, or a slow mo replay seminar to determine if it's 2nd and 7 or 2nd and 8. It is truly mind numbing at times.

Like another poster said above, ratings are dropping and no one in their right mind who isn't committed enough is going to sit down and watch this product. Especially when 40 of those minutes are Bojangles commercials that make you contemplate where you went wrong in life.

And like the article said, a majority of why CFB runs so long is because the offenses are so incompetent. So if your team sucks, and if the opposition sucks as well (story of Miami's life) then you're stuck with some of the longest 4 hours of your life because Jake Garcia can't stop hitting receivers feet and Georgia Tech can't stop dropping passes. CFB must compensate for this.

Its probably even less than that. It definitely is in the NFL anyway.

Even using your 30 minutes, after removing special teams plays (a large number of which end in touchbacks, fair catches and no effort on XP attempts), an offensive or defensive player who plays every snap is only playing like.. 12-13 minutes.

The fck is with these people?

"An average NFL broadcast lasts well over three hours, yet it delivers a total of only 18 minutes of football action."

Seeing as how few people here actually go to games, I don't know how many of you realize that the live viewing product of a CFB game can be stinky. 4+ hour games aren't cool.

Two years ago, I actually timed the amount of time from an offensive TD until the opposing team ran its first play and it ran either 6 or 7 minutes. Can't recall now. This is fine if you're at home, and can tend to different needs. Live? Not much to do. Now, I'm a hardcore that has missed 2 games in 18 years so it doesn't affect me, but for an average fan, that's a turnoff.

Add all the replays into this and you get marathons. I actually appreciate that NFL games are almost pre-determined to finish within 3:15 or 3:25.

Putting a time limit on replay officials would be a good thing as well. Remember when replay was first introduced, it was called "Instant" Replay. lol

The definition of the word instant is; "A period of time so short as to be almost imperceptible."

No more booth initialed penalties. That's another way of shortening games without changing the rules.

As a STH I go to games, and I enjoy the game…not the other stuff.
The examples you site are non-football related. The changes considered will affect…the game.

Here’s my suggestion box entries…
Reduce the play clock from 40 to 30 seconds.
Replays are up in the booth, if a play is in question, the booth beeps the ref and he can hold up the O for up to 30 seconds. By that time everyone else sitting at home knows what the right call is, the booth should know too. If a play has to be looked at 26 times then its too close to change anyway.
