Pre-spring depth charts rooster talk

Did you see the kid's tape? I'm shocked he wasn't more highly recruited.
Shirreffs Thread Derailment:

I hope Shirrefffs turns out to be everything you guys say he can be.

I just see a fan-base starving for hope, and willing to cling to anything. And we appear to be clinging to a 2-star recruit, who chose us over Georgetown, Old Dominion, Columbia, Eastern Michigan and VMI ... A guy who didn't get an offer from UGA (even though their QB position was a cluster last year, and their HC is now our HC).

Some folks thought he looked like Ken Dorsey, and was going to be the next coming. Others saw what Paxton Lynch developed into at Memphis, and think Shirreffs will be the next underrated guy with good measurables to develop.

Maybe he will??

But it wouldn't be a bad thing for us to never have to depend on him being our QB. And if he does end up supplanting Rosier, I hope it's because he's "a good player" and not just that he's "less bad".

... Back to our regularly schedule thread.

I know its a small detail but didnt CMR grab a new FB right after he got the job? I cant recall his name but Im guessing he may jump ahead of Batten.

Not to thread jack from the Shirreffs thread jack but why the love for Cager? He did nothing last year and can't get separation at this level. If I'm CMR, I spread Njoku out wide with Coley and Berrios. I understand the lack of depth at WR, but if Cager plays a significant role I think it portends a rough season.

D-money, said Shirreffs can throw it. I like what I saw of Rozier on game day. I'm pretty happy with the QB position. I'm really interested in Gray. He runs through arm tackles. The smaller backs can't. I'm hoping to see something from Edwards. I never was high on him.

D-Money also said Heaps would be the starting QB in 2014 ...

It's a knock against someone's credibility to think in preseason that a Senior QB with starting experience would start for a conservative HC over a true freshman who didn't enroll early?

I actually said Kaaya would start, and was pretty emphatic about it.

Saw that after my post. I thought I recalled as much. But, point still stands with regards to what MIATL was trying to do there

Cager was a true Freshman and was playing better by the end of the year. Kid is 6'5'' and 215 pounds who will be just fine with a season in the strength and conditioning program.

Not sure what everyone expected from Cager. He was never going to jump ahead of Scott, Waters, Coley. He obviously has a huge opportunity this spring and he'll need to show out with Harris, Richards, Bruce, Mullins on their way.

Agree with this.

Overall this is a strong and balanced roster. Some positions are thin from Golden's last few classes - WR, CB, DT - but those positions also have some of our most talented players which will mask the depth issue if they can stay healthy. Other positions lack star power but have depth like the OL, LB, and S positions. Some positions are just loaded like DE & RB. This roster will look a lot better when the freshmans and transfers (fingers crossed on JCJ) arrive but ultimately this season will come down to coaching. If Richt is the QB whisperer we all hope he is there's no reason this team can't be a top 20 team. We essentially get 3 preseason games before playing 9 games where we'll likely have a QB advantage every week. If Golden and co were as bad at coaching as they all seemed to be and the new crew is even just a solid upgrade on game days I have a hard time believing we won't have our best season in a very long time.

The best thing that could happen is Quarterman taking the MLB spot away from Young by the end of the Spring.

Young is a nice player but by all accounts isn't cerebral enough.

Grace - Shaq - Owens is my wet dream

Young, Smith, Perry, Pinkney, Gordinier, McCloud duking it out for the backup spots.

Young has a TON of upside. Prototypical NFL linebacker when you consider his size and speed

Dumber than a bag of hammers per someone on last year's staff

Well that staff doesn't have a whole lot of credibility with that **** they ran.
