Practice Report 8-6

Pete, or D-money? Do you think Malcolm Lewis could contribute like Travis Benjamin did as a freshmen?

Lewis can definitely contribute. He's very mature-- mentally, physically and skill-wise. He's strong, fast, quick out of his breaks, can catch and can run after the catch. He isn't elite in any category but very good in all of them.

Of all the new receivers, he seems the most "QB-friendly" in terms of his ability to come back to the ball, adjust to errant throws and consistently separate.

We should have been recruiting Mirarmar harder.

Peter,
Are you 1) Sneaking into practice, 2) Getting the info 2nd hand or 3) Completely making it up?

Peter is as reliable as they come. Not making it up.

Didn't say he was. Just wondering how he was able to evaluate the freshman QB's. Aren't practices closed to the media/public except for the first part which mostly includes stretching?

It's a good question. Is he there? I thought he was in HS.

It felt like we went through about 5 years without any WRs who did these things.

Ever since we pinned our hopes on the previous staff developing Khalil Jones many years ago, the receiver position has been a cluster ****.

He is BFF's with Deon Bush.

Stedman Bailey would have been a starter for 3 years here already.

Miami's been looking for a solid pipeline/feeder in Broward. Lets make it happen Al.

Come on Pete. Are you at practice?

So we are writing off true freshman QB's in their 3rd practice of their college careers now? That's wassup.

Neither Dewey or Crow came from programs with big time talent. It is going to take them a year or so to settle in and get use to the pace of the game. Olsen won't have this problem since he comes from a power house. Next year you will be hearing how all 3 plus thompson are competing for the #2 spot.

It's surprising because most expected that Crow would be a project.

Knowing that Dewey was coached up by Ty Detmer, we expected him to be further along than most freshmen QBs.

Dewey has a good football mind, but he greatly benefited from being older than everybody else and having Detmer as a coach. I don't think he has much in the way of physical tools, he should be a capable backup in time though.

This is what I was saying all along... I dont know how high his ceiling is... He didnt play much in public school... He appealed to the state to get an extra year of high school ball as a 19 year old in private small school ball... He did pretty good then but being older playing against inferior talent isnt really impressive... I think Crow will be the better of the two but we'll just have to be patient... Regardless of anything, Morris will play and Williams can sub...

its nice to have functional backups that can actually fill in when needed. With Al's recruiting he seems to address needs correctly unlike the last two regimes. I expect a lot of things from the freshmen and i also expect to so them mature quickly as the season goes along. Keep up the good work guys the Info is GREATLY appreciated!!!
