Post Game Recap: TAMU

Freshman Growing pains.

To his credit, he’s not giving up sacks like Zion did against FL lol

But it’s teachable stuff that they just have to meld into his head, to be more disciplined with his hands & to not panic.
So with the focus on Mauigoa…does Jalen Rivers get a game ball? I don’t remember calling his name all night against elite DEs

Also the cojones on Dawson to keep his foot on the pedal & keep ATTACKING!!! We didn’t sit on the lead & try to “rUn tHe bALL bRo!” to salt away the lead. We didn’t get comfortable & complacent, we kept playing through the 4th quarter as if we were down even though we had a double digit lead! THATS. HOW. YOU. WIN. BIG. GAMES!!!!

Great point

Offense:

Tyler Van Dyke -21/30 374yds & 5TD’s at 70%cmp

Henry Parrish Jr - 10car 50yds, 2rec 7yds

Ajay Allen - 5car 22yds

Colbie Young - 6rec 75yds & 1TD

Xavier Restrepo - 6rec 126yds

Jacolby George - 5rec 94yds & 3TD’s

Isaiah Horton - 1rec 52yds & 1TD

Offense gained 451 total yards (374 passing & 77 rushing), off 54 plays at 8.4 yards per play, getting 16 1st downs going 3/9 on 3rd down with 27:43 in time of possession.

Restrepo started off the game with a misjudge read on the opening Kickoff. Then, he drops a pass that hits him right in the hands on a 3rd down off an option route.

Then a Blocked punt leads to s short field in the Red Zone & TAMU gets an easy score.

Couldn’t have drawn up a worse way to start off a game lol. However, unlike the old new Miami, the new new old Miami didn’t fret; they just kept on fighting & continued to play determined to not let this game get out of hand.

Restrepo also absolutely redeemed himself on the huge Seam route that went for 48yds, getting us down into the Red Zone. That was a real nice bounce back in the 1st quarter & continued on to have one of his best games. He made some great catches & racked up some great YAC yards. Great showing for X.

Francis Mauigoa had a very rough day; with a critical holding call that erased a 1st down on our 2nd possession in the 1st quarter, then another holding penalty in the 2nd quarter & 3rd holding call in the 4th. He was getting handled for the most of the game & had no choice but to hold in order to keep from getting beat. Obviously, a very high-ranked kid, but he has to be accountable for that, those penalties can be costly down the line. Mirabal gotta get him back in the lab during film study & figure out what he was doing wrong. Can’t have this problem reoccurring going forward.

But the OL in general kept TVD clean for the majority of the game except for giving up 1 sack. Otherwise, they did an excellent job giving him time to read the field & go through his progressions as he picked apart that overrated weak *** TAMU secondary.

Dawson’s play calling prowess was on full display on the first TD drive; Tunnel Screen, Tempo-Seam route, Counter Pin & Pull run to the left side & misdirection off max protection jumbo look with Young lined up at H-Back giving off the look of another run play, but goes in motion & walks into the End Zone. For those that are always asking, THAT’s why I’ve been so high on Dawson...

Another great play call on 3rd & 6 by at our own 29yd line on the Drag crossing route to Colbie Young for a 16 yd gain. Then Dawson dials up a Deep ball Double move to Isiah Horton for a 52yd TD!. That’s how you respond! That’s how you play in Big games! Aggressive play call, attacking TAMU’s slow as DB’s.

Big props to Horton on running a nice route & making the catch for the 52yd TD. I pointed out last week against Miami of Ohio that he wasn’t ready yet & looked like a Deer in the headlights, well I was wrong! Big time catch & big time play for the kid.

Jacolby George redeemed his muffed punt earlier in the game with a 64yd TD to help seal the deal & put the game away! That’s the way you keep fighting through adversity not letting mistakes get you down & get in your head to take you out of the game.

Another great play call by Dawson’s Creek on the 32yd comeback route to Colbie Young in the 2min Offense to drive right before the end of the half. Then TVD followed it up with a 19yd frozen rope to the sideline on Out-route to Restrepo to put us in the Red Zone. Then TVD buys time with his legs & finds Jacolby George in the End Zone to get a TD taking the lead going into halftime.

THATS. HOW. YOU. WIN. BIG. GAMES!!!!

In @OrangeBowlMagic thread wondering why Jaleel Skinner didn’t play, I said that Mario sees the TE position as an extension of the OL, if you’re a TE on this team & you don’t Block, you don’t play. So yeah... Yall get it now?

TVD is NOT hurt... He’s on 🔥🔥🔥

Yall still worried about his arm or nah?

He played absolutely lights out! His best game of his career since Pitt 2021. This just goes to show you how much of a difference the OC makes on QB play. A lot of people were blaming TVD & letting Gattless/Ponce off the hook for the porous play of the Offense last year, hopefully it’s understood now that coordinators effect the offense more than anybody, instead of always blaming the players & declaring that they all suck, pay attention to the contrast in play style, play design & how some OC’s understand how to put their players into advantageous situations as opposed to forcing them to run a system that clearly doesn’t fit their skill set & doesn’t work. #SchemeMatters

One of the most critical stats for the Offense today; 4/4 in Red Zone efficiency. We didn’t trade TD’s for FG’s, every time we had explosive plays that got us in the Red Zone, we converted it into TD’s. That’s winning Football.

Defense:

James Williams - 9tks 1PD

Jaden Davis - 8tks 2TFL’s 1PD & 1FF

Kamren Kinchens - 7tks 1INT

Francisco Mauigoa - 6tks

Daryl Porter Jr - 5tks

Te’Cory Couch - 4tks 1INT 1PD

KJ Cloyd - 4tks

Akheem Mesidor - 3tks 1TFL

Jahfari Harvey - 2tks 1PD

Wesley Bissainthe - 2tks 1TFL

Jared Harrison-Hunte - 1tks

Leonard Taylor - 1tks

Davonte Brown - 1tks

Jaden Harris - 1tks

Nyjalik Kelly - 1tks

Rueben Bain - 1tks

Defense had TAMU at just 6.3 yards per pass, held them to 8//18 on 3rd down, with 5TFL’s & forced 3 turnovers.

TAMU got away with a pick on that 3rd down wheel route to Rueben Owens In the 1st quarter. The WR Ainias Smith ran a crossing/rub route & clearly set a NBA style pick-screen to keep the Safety from getting over & covering the back out of the backfield. That should’ve been OPI.

Really loved the Delayed Blitzes that Guidry was dialing up all game. Sending LB’s, Outside Corners & Nickels. Pointed this out last week, but have to mention it again, it’s such a night & day contrast between Manny Nodiaz’s Attacking 4-2-5 vs Guidry’s. Manny would send Blitzers through the A&B Gaps, he would show Blitz pre-snap & still run jailbreaks, while Guidry is sending torpedos from all angles. He shows pre-snap pressure & will drop 1, while sending another & then send a Rover on a delay, it really disrupts the QB’s rhythm. He also trusts his LB’s in coverage a lot more too, which helps our Safeties with their responsibilities because they’re not being forced to cover 3 levels of the field simultaneously.

Francisco Mauigoa was playing like a loose cannon in the 1st quarter, a lot of undisciplined mistakes & penalties on his part early on, but settled down & played a lot better in the 2nd half. I’ll attribute it to big game jitters & excitement.

JW20 had a great game as well, aside from that one Unnecessary Roughness penalty keeping a drive alive after we had gotten a stop on a 3rd down, he played very well. He’s come into his role in this Defense. He’s a S/LB that helps a tremendous amount in the run game & is utilizing his size to bring down the ball carrier leading his shoulder & knocking WR’s & RB’s alike back with full momentum stopping shots. He also played well in coverage playing against TAMU’s TE’s.

Defense did a phenomenal job with creating pressure, held TAMU to just 47yd in the 2nd quarter. That stunting & looping on the DLine with variety of mixing up match ups moving Mesidor, Harvey & Bain around all along the line in conjunction with overload delayed Blitz really confused TAMU & threw off their timing speeding up Weigman’s processing.

Really hope we can get Mesidor, Deen & Kelly back healthy by the time we play Temple, we’re gonna need them come October.

Among the LB’s, Cloyd, Flagg & Bissainthe played the best IMO. Wes has really good natural speed, is a relentless Blitzer & ferocious tackler. He meets the ball carrier with ill-intentions. Will absolutely thrive in this system as a Will-Backer, especially with the way Guidry likes to generate pressure. Hate to keep making the comparison, but in Noiaz’s Defense he would be lined up 3 inches next to the Mike & the two of them would be trying to squeeze into the A-Gap every snap like going home during rush-hour on the train in NY, packed in like sardines.

Even the spacing is different in how we use our LB’s now.

Very good open field tackle by DP JR on that 3rd down against Evan Stewart, who was wide tf open & for whatever reason didn’t run to the 1st down even though he had about 4yds of grass lol.

Jaden Davis had a **** of stick to force a fumble on 3rd down & short. He had a good game in Run support & playing close to the LOS, but with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter gives up the Deep ball post route to Evan Stewart, then another button hook to Stewart. We saw JD’s strengths & weaknesses in this game; Good playing close to the line, struggle with downfield coverage. But overall had a good game.

A lot were scared sh*tless of TAMU’s WR’s, they’re slow & overrated.

But it’s clear our Achilles heel will be dealing with Speed on the outside. Once teams figure out that our top 2 Corners can’t really cover the Deep ball, Guidry is gonna have to do some major shuffling with the Secondary. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Obviously, with the major high of winning a big game against a paper-tiger SEC team was very unfortunately undercut by what happened in the last 2 minutes of the game... It completely changed the tenor of everything & you could tell the players for both teams just wanted to hurry up & get off the field. You never wanna see that happen, especially to such a great kid...

Kam played well as usual & had a nice heads up INT, but Dear God I hope he’s okay. It looked like a reverberating collision with serious whiplash. As crazy as it sounds I hope it’s just concussion like aftershock & not a traumatic neck injury. Without question the heart & soul of the Defense & one of the team leaders. Fantastic person both on & off the field that comes from a great family & is the perfect representation of what Miami Football is all about, Elite play & outstanding character. Really praying for JoJo 🙏🏽 Get well soon;
#BullPride

A lot of Boneheaded Special Teams plays essentially gave TAMU their first 2 TD’s. But on the flip side, Brashard Smith the huge Kickoff return for a TD, good blocking giving him a lane. Props to him for also proving me wrong from last week. His speed is dangerous when he can get North & South out in front.

We don’t really have an official ST’s Coach, it’s basically just Analysts (Marwan Maalouf & Dennis “Tweetle-Dee” Smith) who run the ST’s & it shows. That will have to be an area of focus for the rest of the season, with an emphasis on PR, both kick protection & returns.

Overall, it was a amazing game. Props, respect & salute to the Coaching staff for having this team prepared & ready to go against faux-sEC! “Juggernaut” which they of course are not & have not been. A lot of people seemed to forget that TAMU went 5-7 last year too & even lost to App ST; as I had been saying since last year, this wasn’t UGA, or Bama, or even LSU, TAMU is bottom tier SEC team.

Talent (ON PAPER) doesn’t win, gameplans, competitive will, preparedness & conditioning wins games. Yes, there’s a threshold where teams that are significantly more talented than the other can/will overpower their opponents & win going away. But in equal matchups between two P5 schools, the leading factor is always the practice field & the film room, not the HS recruiting rankings. TAMU lost because #1 Jumbo Fisher is a Corch & is a “Big Game” choker just like Brian Kelly & Harbaugh are & #2 Miami had the perfect gameplan to neutralize TAMU’s perceived advantage on their DLine...

How do you stop a talented DLine? Spread’em out & Throw. The. Ball. Which is exactly what we did. The game ball will go to TVD for his stellar performance, but the kudos IMO goes to Dawson’s Creek. He came into this game pistols blazing daring for somebody to step into the line of fire; he looked across the field & was not impressed by what he saw; after his film review I’m almost 100% certain he had a huge smile on his face when he saw TAMU’s DB’s in action with stoned-feet quicksand movement ability. He stepped in the middle of the road & told DJ Durkin, “I’ll be your Huckberry”.

There wasn’t a moment of hesitation his part, he didn’t think for a second to play it safe or feel threatened at all by TAMU’s Defense, he drew up & dialed up a bevy of pass plays in the book allowing TVD to sit from his Sniper-hide & dice this big slow *** Defense up. THIS IS WHAT NEW AGE MODERN ERA FOOTBALL LOOKS LIKE!!!! Fck all that Bro Style Bro ball control bullsh*t, force Defenses to pick their poison & then feed them fckin venom! TAMU decided to sell out to stop the run, so Dawson said okay, I got something for you mf’as!

Magnificent performance by the Offense, they were firing on all cylinders & played a **** of game putting up 41 points. This is what a productive & explosive Offense is supposed to look like, I know many hate the idea of us throwing the ball, but with TVD at the helm, this is how we’ll go on a run & contend this season.

We still have a lot to cleanup, we’re still undisciplined as a team (although I found it interesting the penalties were mostly from new players 👀), but overall the formula is there for us to win a lot of games this year. We have 2 major tests coming up next month in UNC & Clemson, we win those & the revenge tour 23 is lining up perfectly for us to make a trip up to Trailerhasse & invade Doak...

But, one game at a time; GO CANES!

You’re best in a longtime. I acknowledge you didn’t have much to work with, but I know you know ball. Loved how these Coordinators called this game. Even the blitz where we got caught at the end of the half. Great call, better throw. Happens, but more often than not it goes our way. Love these 2 hires. Neither seem uncomfortable during the game. Gonna be a fun season. Looking forward to more of your stuff. Peace.

Go Canes!!

The entire OL gets a game ball except Mauigoa.

Lee, Cohen, Cooper & Rivers all played great.
Matt Lee was a DAWG

He is the key to that line though what Cooper was doing was incredible. I love what you said about Mauigoa on defense, he just seemed to get away from himself, but once he reigned it in, he was a G

Mauigoa and Lee as transfers have had an incredible domino effect on this tesm

How about Flagg splitting that double team and blowing an entire play up??

Spot on as always. I was sold how Dawson/Mario ended the first half, they gave zero f*** and wanted to score. The OL played great, today called for them to pass block more and they did. Now lets try to heal up and move forward!
