Portal Preview from Cooper Petagna

I will never not be upset that Miami didn't get on Bailey until late. Proven winner playing for an advanced high school football program. Instead we chose a project from an option offense. Can Judd play tight end yet?

Does the NC State tight end Joly still have a year of eligibility? He is pretty much exactly what I hoped Lofton would be only bigger.

Also, random thought, but I really like the Dorian Thomas kid at tight end from New Mexico/Arizona. Super athlete with ball skills. I just hope he can block the A gap successfully.
Miami’s HS quarterback evaluation and development are non-existent. How can you be labeled and elite recruiter and take Judd over Bailey

That's solely dependent on what Mario wants to do.

All I was saying is, he needs to make a decision, stop having one foot in & one foot out.

Either be all-in with smashmouth Bro Ball, or move himself completely out the way. But this hiring Air Raid guys & then forcing them to implement a run system they don't like or believe in is not gonna work.
What about Austin Simmons?

I thought our coach was a recruiter.. we dont have a few holes it seems, we need a whoel depth chart lol

No doubt, but CFB has changed dramatically in the NIL/Portal era. I don't think you can layer in talent the same way anymore because the kids can move freely for more certain opportunities. Likewise, it's too tempting for coaches to upgrade then they've got college film on a guy, many times against common opponents.

The greatest impact on that number one ranked offense last year was Cam Ward. Cam Ward didn’t play the second half of that bowl game and you would’ve never thought it was a number one offense.

We still ran the absolute **** out of the football in that half. Maybe that had to do with Iowa State making no adjustments and playing the same way they did with Ward in the game, but even with Emory in the game we ran the ball better in that half than we have all year this year.

We're not pushing anyone around nearly how we did last year.

What data proves this?

-2018 (Total O: 41st - Passing O: 49th / Rushing O: 54th)
-2019 (Total O: 40th - Passing O: 41st / Rushing O: 51st)
-2020 (Total O: 49th - Passing O: 47th / Rushing O: 61st)
-2021 (Total O: 50th - Passing O: 76th / Rushing O: 24th)
-2022 (Total O: 85th - Passing O: 59th / Rushing O: 95th)
-2023 (Total O: 31st - Passing O: 41st / Rushing O: 44th)
-2024 (Total O: 1st - Passing O: 3rd / Rushing O: 31st)
-2025 (Total O: 48th - Passing O: 33rd / Rushing O: 76th)

To Dmoney's perpetual point about YPP being the better measure, the numbers look better. If you throw out the first years at each school, he's averaged 23rd. That's enough to win you a championship with a good defense. For reference, Lane Kiffin has averaged 19th at Ole Miss.

2018 - 58th - First season
2019 - 26th
2020 - 12th
2021 - 39th

2022 - 89th - First season
2023 - 24th
2024 - 1st
2025 - 38th

I agree with exception offense being held bent on just running up the centers gaps

The difference is Cam Ward kept defenses honest while Beck erratic play has defenses not respecting the passing offense

Common sense.

You guys are talking about his "dream offense" or his "ideal offense." The one he just had was #1 in everything by a mile. They were TuFF and FyZical and they also threw better than everyone. You don't think he wants that again?

By the way, let's revisit the data you posted:

Based on your own post, Mario's teams finished better in passing than rushing every year but one (when they had a running QB). Stats like raw yardage aren't very meaningful anyway, but you seem to value them and they contradict what you're saying.

I don't think Mario is any kind of offensive guru, and it's more than fair to question his results. But in terms of "ideal offense" and "dream offense" and whatever other terms people are using, Mario would sign up for last year's offense every year if he could.

U said “historically good offense,” & the data doesn’t support this, like at all.

& when u say “common sense” are u now stating ur opinion as what Mario wants? Respectfully, u stated something as a fact of what Mario wants, then proceed to rebut this by saying “common sense” & “we don’t think he wants…”

What I “think” Mario wants is a complementary football where the Passing O is competent, & it feeds off the Rushing O. I think he wants a physical defense. Being that I’ve heard him criticized us passing the ball, too, much in certain games where the defense was gassed + the empirical, irrefutable data, I’m not going to use a one off to say that’s what he wants. That’s like me looking at one game of Dennis Rodman’s stat line of 34 points & 23 rebounds & assume he’s a scorer.

From that list…

Jordan Seaton - OT
Cam Coleman - WR
Luke Reynolds - TE

*No portal QB
No portal QB is hilarious. It would be one thing if people behind the scenes have been raving about someone but that’s never been the case

YPP is very useful, but not a whole story either. I would be curious to see Kiffin's total "raw" yardage as well. I suspect it's higher by a similar margin, which tells me he is probably getting his offense more possessions and more "explosive" plays.

Since everybody’s given their opinions on what offense Mario really wants it is in my opinion that the offense that would give Mario unconscionable amounts of joy is the Marty Schottenheimer Christian Okoye lead offense

What “data” are you referring to? Your own stats showed that his teams have been better passing than running almost every year.

In terms of play selection, his teams at Oregon ran more than they threw. His teams at Miami (with the exception of this year) have all thrown more than they’ve run. It’s hard to find a pattern there.

I think last year was his “dream offense” because he’s called it a dream offense and they were his best offense by far. That seems like common sense to me.

My view is that he’s not ideological at all. He’s never called plays. He wants a tough and physical running team, but he had that last year in a majority pass offense. He strikes me as a guy who is highly dependent on his quarterback and coordinator and will take the shiniest toy available.
