Portal and bags

The Tyrique news had me thinking. This may have been discussed already, but I've been telling friends for awhile why the portal is great for us.

1. Constantly losing local players due to "bags"
2. Kids going to schools in places we all know they would never go to without real incentive
3. We've done well in the portal
4. Kids spurning us and then trying to return later (i.e. Walker, Tyrique)

At the end of the day, these kids are going to leave for their bags elsewhere, but once they've got the bag, there's nothing to stop them from returning. Obviously it's not a ton of players doing it, but there's definitely a positive to it all.

Thoughts?

The portal is nothing more than a way to centralize transfers.

Transfers have always happened.

Bags have always happened.

The kids going SEC aren’t doing it only for the bags. They’re doing it because it’s real cfb and UM has been a shot show for almost two decades.

The kids who go and star don’t tend to come back via the portal.

We need to take care of our own program and kids who want to stay home will. Relying on transfers isn’t a strategy. It’s a tactic.

Agreed once the NCAA clamps down on amateur free agency, and forces these kids to sit out a year it might slow the tide. But I think it might as well CJ age the bag game so that players will only get a % of it upfront then perhaps annual “bonuses”?

This kind of thinking is prehistoric.

You have to get the best 24 guys out there who give you the best chance right now.

Between portal transfers, early departures and coaches coming and going there is no loyalty. It’s basically the Wild West. Put guys in the league and more will continue to come who will help us on a year to year basis

They’re not gonna force em to sit, and they’re allowing NIP, because they are afraid their gonna end up having to pay players of the don’t allow concessions.

You must have been born yesterday. Transfers aren’t some mew thing. They rename it the portal and some of you act like it’s a fancy new thing. Bryant McKinnie, Jeremy Shockey and Jerome McDougle came from Juco. Troy Aikman was a transfer. The portal was created to regular\te the wild west, not increase it. Folks just pay more attention now.

The idea that your 25 initial counters are more precious than ever today isn’t the case. We have to make a roster from all sources, same as ever. Our problems havent changed much in ages. Evaluate poor;y and it won’t matter. Recruit lazy and it won’t matter. We’ve had ear;y departures for ages, too. When kids realize the U doesn’t care about winning, why should they stick around and risk their career?

Lmao at kids realizing the U doesn’t care about winning.

You mopes must go down the cliche checklist when posting. These 85 we have must be dumb as rocks cause none of them wanted to go did they?

Kids having to sit a year is doa. It’s not like it was before. Transfers are more important than they’ve ever been and getting bigger.

If bags are in play when they are first recruited, they're going to be in play when they hit the portal of they're still a worthy prospect.

Bags aren't anywhere as prevalent as some would have you believe. That doesn't mean they don't exist, but our biggest problem has been us sucking. When fans who are there through thick and thin, but don't believe in those running the program, why in the **** would a recruit?

I see what ya'll are saying and for clarification, i wasn't posing it as if the portal made transfers a new thing, just that it seems easier than ever for kids to move and get instant play waivers.

Idgaf who agreed w this post, but this is extremely spot on.

Fact is, b/c we are not taking care of home, be it recruiting, evaluations, or development of our recruits, we are building a roster filled w/ guys who couldn’t cut it at other programs (or left b/c they didn’t like their situation). That’s not a good look, period. Top programs aren’t relying upon the portal; they may cherry pick here & there to fill out their roster or grab a starter every blue moon.

We cannot, and let be very clear, WE CANNOT continue to rely upon the portal as a “strategy.” We will NOT be a P5 version of Marshall!

I’m positive that 95% of the fanbase does not know what “development“ means when referring to players.

It’s not about relying on it, It’s about understanding it’s importance in today’s game and maximizing it’s possibilities.

Right now no one is doing it better than we are. That doesn’t make us Marshall it makes us innovative and smart

No one is understanding “it’s importance”, but us. Not OSU, not Bama, not Clemson, not ND, not nan team in the top 15 in CFB this yr. U know why?? Guess why.

Ohio State’s starting running back and quarterback were both portal guys..

Oklahoma’s QBs were too. Same with UGA.

Regardless we are not even in the same stratosphere as far as depth and continuity as those schools. If we want to win now we need to fortify this roster with portal guys until we reach that level
