Playoff money

Could you imagine being on BC's staff? Or being Fran Brown right now? BC, Cuse, UVA, NC State, Duke, Cal ... and put FSU in that bucket. They are hopelessly behind and falling further behind.

Clemson is barely keeping up. They stubbornly refused to partake in the NIL/portal race at the get go. Then hesitantly got in and now are behind the game. Not that they can’t catch up, but their head coach still seems to give a half hearted endorsement for NIL and portal usage. I could be wrong but from where they were recruiting top guys to where they are now is shocking. Just sayin’

Good call. They could truly be unable to keep up in the NIL era, in which case I've overestimated their value going forward.

I captured the last 10 years of Clemson's HS recruiting rankings overall and ACC below. They are vastly underrecruiting if they want to be a playoff team considering Dabo wasn't in the portal until last season and only barely then (3 guys, #45 team ranking).

This 2026 portal class and 2027 high school class will be critical for them to either go "up or out".

Mario Era
2026: 19 | 4th after Canes, FSU, UNC
2025: 23 | 3rd after Canes, FSU
2024: 14 | 3rd after Canes, FSU
2023: 11 | 2nd after Canes
2022: 14 | 3rd after UNC, Canes
------
Pre-Mario Era
2021 #5 / #1 ACC
2020 #3 / #1 ACC
2019 #9 / #1 ACC
2018 #6 / #1 ACC
2017 #11 / #2 ACC after FSU

This is the clearest picture that I’ve seen so far of how the top teams keep stacking dollars on top of dollars and move further and further away from the pack. Well done by Mario to insist on extreme investment in the program before he would come here. This is the result. We are almost at a point where NIL is fully paid for by the playoff/bowl money with less and less private investment needed. Self sustaining is good.
