Players and plays I'm most excited to watch against Bethune

It'll be a scrimmage. Let's be clear. The objective is hopefully crisp development and health. What most players accomplish against Bethune may not necessarily translate to how they can or should win against TAMU or ACC-level talent. That said, still lots of stuff to look for while I sit there watching till the clock ticks to 00:00.

QB TVD - No, I won't really be watching for big stats or any proof that we'll have a downfield attack. If you don't already know #9, this "what to look for during a scrimmage against Bethune" might not be the content you want. That said, I'll specifically watch for what they have TVD practice. He'll likely have more crossing routes and inside-the-hashes throws to make this season. I look forward to watching his improvement against zone defenses, anticipating his throws more, and touch passes. I expect we'll get some easy money tomorrow to the RBs and down the seams to the TEs, but looking for the crossing throws he'll need for later in the season. Later this season, I want to see him move his feet and "spark the game" quicker by running, but I definitely hope that is NOT against Bethune.

RB Thad Franklin - Have a decent idea of what we'll see from the other two backs. Want to see how #22 looks in a gap scheme, possibly running downhill, and if they try him in the pass game. I think he may be one of those players who plays in games better than what he practices.

RB Walkons and/or recent transfer - I just want to see them eat up 10-15 carries (combined) at the end of the game and help us preserve our health.

TE Elijah Arroyo - I think #80 is our dude. If we're going to surprise folks with any aspect of our passing game, I think Arroyo has a significant role in that product. Do we immediately put on film his ability to stretch a defense and win some matchups against Safeties?

OL Rivers - To have the OL we need against the better teams, I believe he needs to be at his best. Watching #64 push around Bethune might not prove a ton, but NOT pushing them around tells us a lot, as it has in previous years.

OL Anez Cooper - Based on the camp hype, he's impressed. Look forward to watching #55 in a gap scheme where his sheer size and power might be of use to us later.

WR Brinson - Restrepo will get his looks and catches. Key Smith will as well. I'm looking for another one of these players (especially with George presumed out) who play in games better than they practice. Look for #0 in the RZ and, ideally, on some tougher slant or in-breaking routes we'll need.

WR Isaiah Horton - He may or may not get on the field late, but a flash here may help us later. Keep your eyes open late in the game for the taller #16 (assuming the current roster numbers didn't change).

DE Nyjalik Kelly - Release him. The much anticipated coming out party of a player many of us believed was underrated coming out of HS and has had nothing but praise from just about everyone. I can't even tell you his final number (#32?) because I'm not sure the roster (let's not make this that thread) is accurately updated. How early will he get in? Looking for 10-12 second half snaps. Maybe he flashes.

LB Caleb Johnson - I think we'll need #40 pretty quickly this season. Sometimes, it's tough to judge LBs in practice settings. I think LB evaluations are usually best left for game situations, and I hope Caleb or someone like him makes a move.

LB Chase Smith - The forgotten "freak." I really have no clear idea why #41 has gone almost unmentioned throughout Fall camp. Each time he was given an opportunity last season, in a scheme with no real structure, he made a few flash plays.

LB Wesley Bissainthe - For obvious reasons, #31 is a player I'll expect to see later in the game and hopefully "flying around." Young LBs often flash with their speed early in their careers. Over the last 40 years, we've seen it from some of our greats. Don't know if Wesley will reach those heights, but in a boring blowout-type game, that's something to look for during the 4th Q.

CB Malik Curtis - After the Spring game, I mentioned #16 looked sticky, but still undersized. He has his peers and coaches mentioning his name. Let's see what it looks like with the ball in the air. A Malek Young-type would be a welcomed development for the program.

CB Chris Graves and CB Jaden Harris - Love their attributes and feet. Let's see if they (a) get a chance and (b) Bethune puts the ball in the air against either of them (#22 and #19, respectively).

Good list. I’ll add:

Jake Garcia - for obvious reasons.

Harvey - this team needs an EDGE. He should look the part vs BCC. Can’t wait to watch Kelly, too.
This is one of those years I could have probably listed 30 players.

Haven't watched a snap of practice and the Spring game was different than what I had expected.

From the bits I've been told, we've tried out a number of things on defense. I suspect we'll see very little of that this week or next. Only the intentional stuff they want on film.

The main thing I want to see from offense is can the receivers catch the ball cleanly. It's a scrimmage so I won't even entertain the thought of not creating separation.

The main thing I want to see from the defense is who can pressure the QB. The OL they face will not be good, failure to create pressure will be an indictment.

Same with the run game. Running the ball well, being physical at the point of attack, doesn't prove anything. But not running the ball well would also be an indictment. Stacked fronts notwithstanding.

I want to see the offense look explosive. At least for the first half. Let’s face it, it’s Bethune and we should be able to run the ball effectively and complete easy passes. What I want to see is the running backs taking a four or five yard gain and turning into a big play. If we’re only averaging 5 yards a carry against an FCS team, we’re in for a long season. If we can show some explosiveness in both the run and pass game, I’ll be happy.

Interesting thought... Is it better to try to hide a weapon or to let your opponents know about it so they scheme for it and it potentially opens other things up.

Want to see the DL live up to the hype that we’ve heard about throughout camp, specifically Mesidor, Agude and Jackson.

I want to see our OL move people. Having nightmares of years past against G5/FCS level schools where we simply weren’t getting the type of push in the run game that a Miami team should against an overmatched team.

I want to see a WR emerge and play with confidence on the outside. This should be a good opportunity for one of those guys to build on the progress they’ve shown in camp and make plays in a glorified scrimmage.

I’ll give one on both sides of the ball.

Corey Flagg - the new scheme should have him making more plays now that the D line won’t be leaving the Lbers out to die. Expect a quicker player like Dmoney alluded to as well.

WR Smith - X may be the favorite in the slot but Smith has that game changing ability. Would love to see Gattis get him some touches in space and let him ball.

I'll add a couple to the list.

Darrell Jackson - we've all seen the Greentree clips of him, but I can't wait to see this freak on the field for a real live game
Skinner - How do we use him? I don't think he's there yet as a blocker, but do we get him involved in the passing game and how so?
Blades - How does he look in his first game since COVID and its resulting complications. Do we use him more as a Safety or Corner?

I say put something like this on film. There's already a flash of it from last year's Pitt game. Emphasize it. Feed in to the idea that Gattis doesn't use players outside the hashes. Then go to College Station and run drags and crosses behind them. Let Key Smith and others run free across the field. Shock TAMU. Recruit their commits. Steal their wives. Grow the empire.

I really think Jackson will end up as the best NFL prospect on this roster.
