Pete is part of the Problem

With the amount of money poured into this program, asking to lower standards just sounds silly. We’ve lost to teams that have less talent than us. It’s not too much to ask to beat the ones we’re supposed to beat.

Standards are what push programs and franchises to be great. Would you ever tell the Yankees, Red Sox, Barcelona, or Real Madrid to lower their standards? Of course not. Their fans expect greatness and hold their teams accountable.

I think Pete just got emotional in the heat of the moment, which is totally understandable.

I saw the reaction yesterday and while I understand what Pete is getting at I have to disagree with it . This team is littered with players big schools wanted . It’s a good roster but so many boneheaded calls .. .. poor development .. poor offensive scheme we will continue to lose these games … Ohio st doesn’t lose to middling programs .. they lose the big boy ones once in awhile … are we Ohio st .. no .. but in the acc with our roster we should be

The standard is the standard but acting like mentally ill victims as if Mario is bringing down the program to a place it’s never been before… seems like a therapy issue.

I don’t think any fans want to lower expectations and accept a mediocre program, but the fact is that’s what we are right now, and that’s what we’re gonna be with this current regime. I don’t think Pete was trying to say we should all be fine with it, but you have to accept the reality that this program is not elite and will not be anytime soon.

Honestly, we're all fools for believing Mario would ever win all the games he's supposed to..it's been his MO even at Oregon. Even when he has vastly more talented teams he dropped games as double digit favorites every year he was there.

I remember @DMoney saying it when Mario first got hired..he'll build the team and program but will always underachieve as a gameday coach. If we want to be a perennial top 5 team, he needs to basically recruit as a top 3 level. Well, lately we're about a top 15 team and he's been in the 6-12 rankings when it comes to recruiting. That makes sense. He's an underachiever as a gameday coach and an overachiever as a recruiter/roster builder (does so better than the product he puts on the field).
I'm not sure Mario ever gets to the place where we go out and dominate the bad teams in the ACC the way everybody expects us to. If we want to **** need:
Give up his identity of tuff/physical/ball control/pounding the ball offense
Give up his gameday decision making (4th down calls, timeouts tempo calls, possession decisions whether to kneel or try and score)
Hire two elite X & O coaches and let them decide how to run their units (like Heatherman)

Anything short of those 3 decisions, and we'll always get what we've always got with Mario. The thing everybody KNEW when Mario got hired.

A good program builder.
An underachiever as a gameday/strategic coach.

I actually agree that expectations should be lowered.

We have a poor game day coach
We’ve been a middling ACC program for multiple decades
We’ve had poor coaches since Coker

We are a program that celebrates an occasionally 10 win season now coupled with a bowl loss
That’s not how the real world works. You don’t pour hundreds of millions into something and then accept results that don’t match the investment. You fire whoever is keeping you from reaching those goals.

Lol after how last season ended, why the fvck was y'all expectations so high anyway? Same HC, same OC. The one change(DC) has shown improvement. Y'all just choose to ignore signs like battered women 🤷🏾‍♂️

You can try. Doesn’t mean it’ll work. I’m sure Blockbuster thought they could keep goin until they couldn’t

Manage our expectations is translation for “we have a dumb coach who doesn’t change and it’s gonna cost us 2-3 games per year. Just be happy with the talent acquisition.”

I’ll also add that many on here acknowledged this when Mario was hired. He’ll get us straight for talent acquisition but he has a ceiling as a coach. The silver lining is that he’ll leave the next coach plenty of talent to win.
This is why I wanted Lane when we were looking to hire. Not that he's significantly better, but I feel like the win ceiling is closer than Mario would have us.

After 3.5 years of sample size now, they should be lowered, lol. You shouldn’t expect anything of significance under this regime. But don’t confuse that with me letting them off the hook, because that’s not the case. My expectations are lowered because I have plenty of evidence that this guy will always underwhelm on gameday and his entire operation is flawed.
