Our S&C

Of course size and strength help, but good technique and athleticism help a lot more.

And by "getting lower" I'm talking about hip level, which takes quite a bit of athleticism and lower body strength to do.

If you're grappling with someone and you get your hips underneath theirs along with a solid base, you ARE going to be able to drive them back.

That's why bend, flexibility, and a quick getoff are so important in an OL.

Add to that, hand position and a good "punch" are also extremely important.

There's a lot that goes in to it, man. It's not just about who is the tallest and the heaviest, or even the strongest.

Lol. I wrestled varsity for 4 years in HS and competed against kids in PA/NJ/NY which is arguably the best wrestling region in the country. I know all about leverage in grappling. I also played varisty football for 3 years. I understood what you are saying and I agree. The guys need to get better at technique. That is on Searles, but when you are playing against a mid level FCS team we should be able to pancake these kids even if they have perfect technique.

OP has a point. If Big Gus was doing his job correct then the Rousseau injury doesn't happen. I know for a fact that ALL Alabaga does are workouts focused on bone density improvement.

We looked like a pro team under Moffit

We looked like the Miami City Ballet under Swasey

We looked like a Big 10 team circa 1973 under Swasey/Golden

We now look like a legitimate college football team under Felder, and improving every year.
Moffitt was a Savage...watched him many times in the old UM Weight room....

im asking. is this normal? that's it. its not a complaint it just seems like we have a crazy amount of injuries last two years. maybe lack of depth is causing my focus on it.

Yes it’s normal to have injuries.
Would you say bama has a good S/C program ?
They seem to have had a lot of injuries the past two years.

Love it. I'm a huge believer that wrestling helps make a better athlete. It's not a coincidence that a lot of the best OL come from states that have good high school wrestling.

Matter of fact, if I were Mark Richt, I would tell every freshman and sophomore to join either the wrestling or track team, you pick, in the offseason

But that's just me. I don't think there's anything better for a young athlete as far as getting in to condition, developing toughness, and learning about leverage and how to control your opponent. IMO.

He's better than Swassey, but we aren't even close to having an elite S&C program.

It really is this simple.

It's definitely above average. LSU players were cramping all night in Jerry World. Don't think we had a single one cramp.

But we're not elite.

The injury question is retarded, however I’ll be happy when our oline can get some cotdayum push upfront.

There was no size advantage by LSU. In fact their corners and receivers actually looked smaller then ours. They may have had us on the oline. But when you trot a guy out like Mahoney that’s going to be the case. Had Scaife been out there that line is even.

Haha I agree to for sure. I remember reading about a couple NFL HCs that liked to recruit guys that wrestled in HS because they were so good at controlling their opponent. Sadly Miami does not have a wrestling team, but they do have a wrestling Club that is actually pretty solid. They meet up at the wellness center, but they used to have an olympic freestyle bronze medalist as their coach(he wrestled for the USSR back in the day). The kids are pretty solid and the coaching was top notch so they actually could mess around over there and learn a bit. I agree with the track as well. I agree 100%. Some of the toughest guys I know are wrestlers. Being able to grind out that last 2 minutes of the final match in a tournament after not eating or drinking the day before is pure mental toughness. Even if you don't cut being able to grind out that last couple minutes after already having a few matches within the past couple hours is so grueling. Then the D1 guys that need help getting on the scale after not eating or drinking for so long while also training like a mad man. That is just next level toughness. Physical and mental. Me and a bunch of other football players wrestled during the winter and we would come in football shape and still have to crawl out of the wrestling room after practice. You are correct about the states that develop beast lineman all also are great wrestling states. I doubt it is a coincidence.

Moffitt is at LSU now....Best S & C coach in the business....

No question, we weren't physically dominated like we were in the Peach Bowl.

There lineman won some reps, but that's going to happen. They have recruited grown *** men in the trenches for decades.

O line performance is 99% on Searles. Period.

You can get guys stronger, lower and upper body, and show improvement, as we have, by posted numbers. This is NOT an S&C issue.

But using strength effectively to be a good olineman is 100% on coaching. It’s already been said here but leverage, body positioning, explosive thrusting techniques with arms, using your lower body for upwards explosiveness, balance, effective footwork.....that’s on O line coaching - it’s not even a question.

You can have guys slinging massive amounts of iron, it doesn’t mean shlt if they don’t have the talent technique and footwork to dominate their space and opponent.

Period.
