Our RB room

lol u think they are going to run the ball with the pass happy air raid offense. we had martinez fletch and lyle (and others) last year and barely ran the ball as it was

Every RB on our team save Brown was a 4 star RB out of high school. Every single one. Lyle was considered a top 5 RB in the country, and #1 by some rankings. If that is not good enough to have a strong running game behind our OL, then we have big problems up and down our roster with highly rated kids who are nowhere as good as their high school ratings.

Lyle was the composite #11 RB ranked in the nation

#15 by 247
#6 by On3
#24 by ESPN
#3 by Rivals

Our RB room is solid, but it’s not elite:
Girard Pringle (4⭐️): #7 RB in the Nation
Mark Fletcher (4⭐️): #8 RB in the Nation
Jordan Lyle (4⭐️): #11 RB in the Nation
CWH (3⭐️): #61 RB in the Nation
CharMar Brown (3⭐️): #25 Portal RB

Right now the rotation will most likely be:
MF RB1
JL RB2
CB RB3
GP RB4
CWH RB5

The only thing I will say, b/c of the blocking scheme, a Mario Cristobal coached team usually does well in the running game even if the NFL is not indicative of this, despite a RB’s ranking

2011: Kendrick Rhodes: 1,149 yrds (4.9 ypc) 8 TDs
2018: CJ Verdell: 1,018 yrds (5.0 ypc) 10 TDs
2019: CJ Verdell: 1,220 yrds (6.2 ypc) 8 TDs
2021: Travis Dye: 1.271 yrds (6.0 ypc) 16 TDs
2024: Damien Martinez: 1,002 yrds (6.3 ypc) 10 TDs

All the aforementioned backs were 3⭐️. So it depends on the strength of this line. We’ve lost several key pieces over the years, so we’ll see; but we should be able to run the rock.

Wonder where great, good stack in relation to Elite and Solid lol. What's worse than solid? Is solid average or above average?

Cause if three top 11 RBs out of HS is solid, I'm wondering how many programs have Elite, Great, and Good RB units .. wonder... Are there even 10? Lol

Oh and
Pringle 7th by On3, 8th by 247
Lyle 1st by On3, 15th by 247
Fletcher 8th by On3, 6th by 247

So by On3 ratings we have three top 8 RBs in their respective classes. 247 two top 8 and Lyle was top 15 by them. Honestly idgaf what ESPN/Rivals ranks anyone... Definitely seems solid for surely....

If we can't sling it, they will stack the box and absolutely stuff our simple, repetitive run game.

If we can spread them out and run creatively, we will be able to hang.

Both teams have good running games. Notre Dame was 4th nationally in yards per carry and we were 5th.

We will miss Martinez, but Lyle and Fletcher combined for 1,007 yards (6 YPC) and 13 TDs last year. Both have the physical tools to hold up against real defenses. I'd give Notre Dame the edge on paper because of Love's explosiveness but it's close.

The real separator will be run defense. Both teams have new defensive coordinators for different reasons. Huge game for guys like Justin Scott and Wesley Bissainthe.
To be fair, ND was 4th with no real pass threat. Miami had the #1 pick at QB. ND a 6th rounder.

ND has arguably the best RB room in the country, but you never know how things will pan out. It's not an easy start going to Miami and having to deal with the crowd while trying to manage a new, although highly hyped, QB (for ND)

Is this RB group good enough to run on ND? The OL should be able to at least go toe to toe with ND’s DL. Do we have the backs to punish Norte Dame?

This game will come down to stopping the run and our run game, as ND’s secondary is excellent IMO.

Thoughts?
With Our oline and powerful, running backs, you better believe, that we’re gonna be running down their throat all night long. Their defensive tackles don’t have **** on our offensive line. We have a top five line in the country this year if not the best and you could take that to the bank.

To be effective running the ball against teams like ND (as well as others we will face in CFP) the scheme needs to be more than just bludgeoning and hoping we can just push forward up the center's *** for positive yardage.

I know, I know...this scheme works just look at last year's numbers. Sure, if you look at the numbers it worked but if it was so successful and effective to create manageable 2nd and 3rd down scenarios how did we lose to inferior DLs at Syracuse and GTech?

Miami will run on ND if there's variety in the scheme. If it's just run it up the center's ***, then Beck will be seeing a lot of 3rd and longs playing into the hands of NDs experienced secondary against Miami's inexperienced WR core.

I hate our run scheme which I think prevents our RBs from hitting their mark. I dont think MF has the top end speed to be elite but hes a good college bck. Lyle has the top end speed but hes only really done much against a bad USF team.

I dont see us changing in how we call the run offense esp when we didnt do it with Cam who is more mobile.

what helps are screens but we cannot run a single screen to save our lives.

Chris Ash is an even front guy, isn’t he? Or is Freeman going to make him run the same defense Golden ran?

They’re breaking in a new QB and DC too, on the road, in Week 1.

They have what will likely be the best LB group in the country. On paper that is the biggest mismatch.

Sounds like they are going to run the same defensive but probably add more zone concepts on the back end. Last year they were extremely man heavy, that was basically their identity.

From Ash at one of the pressers:
“If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. That was really the conversation that Coach (Marcus) Freeman and I had about this situation,” Ash said. “There has been really good football played here on defense. There’s been standards, there’s been accountability, they’ve been well coached, and we’re just looking at ways that we can enhance it and make it better. Conceptually, we’re going to keep doing a lot of the same things that have been done here.
