I don’t disagree with your assessment at all. My point is simply that even being the best recruiter on a staff does not make one a good recruiter as there are so many things that influence a young man’s decision other than the quality of the recruiting. The reality is that every recruiter is better at any school which gives a kid what he wants; money, proximity to home, class size, General discipline or lack thereof (players talk about this). An ace recruiter is the best recruiter on your staff. There isn't a participation trophy. One of your coaches is better at recruiting than the rest.
Who was the one coach everyone thought could have been retained on the previous staff? Hartley, bc he can recruit. He's already doing it at UG. Would u rather send Hartley or Coach Kool out on the recruiting trail?
Coaches usually specialize in recruiting or developing. Rarely do u find a coach who is elite at both. Coach Kool was more of a developer. Coach Dugans was more of a recruiter. I'm sure u can guess which one Coach Stubblefield is better at, which is a smart move by Manny bc our WR room needed to be developed more.
One of my best friend’s sons left Atlanta (and UGA and Tech) to play ay Notre Dame. UGA and Bama offered money, UGA set him up with a girl, and every school offered more than Notre Dame. But Notre Dame offered things the other schools could not; prestige as an academic institution and an alumni base of people in Fortune 500 companies.
So did Notre Dame do a better job of recruiting him or did that school simply have things which were more important to him and his family? Was it because of a recruiter or a school? Well it wasn’t because of recruiting. He couldn’t even tell you the name of his lead recruiter at any school because he didn’t care. But the school won.
