Nixon was president, Vietnam still going on. My draft number was 24; Cassificsaion I-A (fit for service). I was among the first 18 year-olds to vote, Title IX just happened. I was 1650 miles away from Punta Gorda in Dodge City, Kansas hoping to get at least a season of NAIA Ball in (Thank God for Paris Peace Talks). This was the night we got our unis. I had earned a DE spot, then an OG broke his arm and I got switched to OT (Refs made me change numbers during the season). At 6’ 190 I was the smallest starting tackle in the NAIA, the other one was the biggest 6’8” 285. The big lug was just here visiting me last week.

Now when I weigh-in on O-line posts, listen. Because I got to block for six different thousand yard backs in HS and College. A couple from Belle Glade who were the fastest humans I ever saw, guys who were running down those rabbits in the Muck 35 years before ESPN caught on. There were ten of us from Florida; Charlotte, Glades Central, STA, Tampa Catholic, Cardinal Newman, Tarpon Springs - we won the conference two of the next three years. Florida has always had the best athletes.

What a trip Dodge City was. I arrived on the 100th Anniversary of the "Wickedest Little Town in America." If college was any more fun it would have killed me.

EDITED, it occurred to me there may be Canes fans who wondered what the **** a draft was, that wasn't related to football. Let's just say on Draft Lottery Night during the Vietnam War - most every 18 year-old male in the country was glued to the Bingo Like lottery spectacle of little blue balls painted with your birthdate on them bouncing around in a hopper, then randomly pulled out and announced. This dictated your near future and life. Also, wanted to mention we had a lot of Florida talent on those teams.

@Silver King This is awesome! Thanks for sharing. Dear god tho, at that weight you must have been a chop blocking fool?
Ha ha, a couple of buddies played on another KCAC team, they told me their scouting report said, "The RT is a snake, plays 18-inches off the ground." I was lightening fast off the ball, and the DT usually had his hands on the ground as the running back was going by. Only way I could survivie.
