I know a guy who played for him when he was a high school coach in Colonial Heights, VA.

In both cases it was probably more wanting to get out of a miserable situation at UM than going to what seemed like a great situation. I think both were very unhappy at UM for different reasons and wanted desperately to get out since they couldn't change things. I believe Howard was very unhappy with the then-current administration. He had been hired under a different president and AD. I think he was very unhappy with the administration by the time 1983 rolled around. That was probably Foote and Jankovich.

Butch, I think, was feeling badly treated and disrespected by the fans. You can add the press to it from what I recall. He was treated mercilessly on the message boards among other places despite being willing to be more accessible. He did a weekly online chat with fans on Gary Ferman's site. Most coaches would not have done that. He had some shortcomings in certain areas of game management but he could have learned. Don't forget he had never served as a head coach before.

I think both coaches had been happy to get away from a very difficult and trying job.

Some say the straw that broke the camel's back for Howard was that the administration took all the bowl money from the '84 OB and put it into the general fund rather than the athletic department. One story said that Howard got upset that he couldn't put "National Champions" on the letterhead, although I doubt I doubt it was that trivial.

It was probably a lot of different things..

I think JJ saw increasingly strict academics frustrating his ability to recruit talent but that theory is more speculative.

but butch’s thoughts on portis are not nearly as peculiar and outrageous as soldinger’s. dont know if you ever saw don’s recruitment eval memo on portis. It’s mind numbing. Don said that portis was not UM caliber and would never be the kind of player to make a contribution to the program.

don eventually changed his mind once clinton got to campus, but if butch hadn’t had a contrary opinion, portis would not have been a ‘cane. Still went down as one of the dumbes

Howard has always said, leaving UM was the greatest professional mistake of his life. He wasn’t miserable at UM. He had challenges like every job, and yes, harry mallios retiring was a change. But not one that made him leave. The financial promises made by woody weiser were the determining factor.

and butch? If he hadn’t been a pathological liar, and saddled with a money ***** of a wife, things might have turned out differently for him as well.

JJ and tad foote did not see eye to eye. That is very true.

But it wasn’t the reason JJ left. neither were the academic standards which JJ was ok with because he was a stickler for taking academics seriously.

Herman maybe should have stayed in Houston. Schnellenberger never again has success elsewhere - neither did Erickson - and the Old Man at UNC seems to do much better THERE.

You're right - some coaches just fit some locations - and some location only fit some coaches.

This administration has always been cheap. Then when Butch turned the program around - they still wanted to be cheap.

And we all can see just how well that's turned out.

Howard was and still is cantankerous. My son and I were just guests of the AD at FAU recently. One of his assistants remarked about having to drive Howard somewhere and how cranky and cantankerous, and petty he was.So, yeah it could have been that trivial. But success is difficult to handle and makes demands on everyone. Could all be true and contributing to why things didn’t work.
