OT: Helpless Old Man Beaten, Humiliated

The Admin made a huge blunder being cheap with Butch. They were still super cheap in those days (and didn't open up the purse strings until the CMR hire).

Also, who here would have said no to $4 million a year and taken $1+ million a year instead? No-one.

I don’t disagree. I always thought Butch would leave for the NFL. He has three SB rings as an assistant coach. I’d find if hard to believe he wouldn’t want his chance as a HC.

I don't understand how fans can bash someone that assembled the greatest collection of talent on one team ever. Let's look at just some of the facts:

  • Sixteen (16) first round picks.
  • NFL Hall of Famers like Ed Reed, Frank Gore (now 4th in yards gained in NFL history & the most electric RB other than Barry Sanders I had ever seen pre-injury) & Sean Taylor (who was looking like the greatest ever at his position).
  • A group of RBs that included Clinton Portis (2nd rounder & great pro); McGahee (best rushing season ever at Miami and a 1st round pick); Najeh (4th rounder & rumored to better than the others at one time); and they were backed up by the guy fourth on the NFL's all-time yards gained list.
  • His TEs were guys like Shockey & Winslow (both awesome first round talents).
  • The QB has one of the best W-L records in CFB history.
  • We've barely touched on the D but there were multiple 1st rounders there too (Reed, Buchanon & Rumph as DB). LB (DJ Williams & Vilma both 1st rounders). William Joseph at DL. Dan Morgan was the most decorated LB in CFB history.

Butch did all of that under the effects of crippling sanctions. It's likely the best coaching job ever done in CFB. Yes, Saban has an incredible record at Alabama but they've been a powerhouse for decades. He didn't bring them back from the ashes. Butch almost couldn't miss on more than 1-2 evals given how few schollys he had to work with. What he delivered was truly astounding.

He's in football purgatory at FIU. That's a little known (nationally) commuter school without a good brand & facilities. I don't think anyone could make that really work.

If you want to say he's too old now, maybe (but I don't think so). But, to bash someone that created an absolute machine at Miami and assembled the greatest roster of talent ever in CFB is simply ludicrous. If nothing else, I'm grateful to Butch for providing many indelible memories to Canes fans. It was an awesome thing to experience.

Nobody is bashing what Butch DID. Did, past tense. You telling us in 2019 how great the 2001 team was as a reason to hire Butch is the same as if someone were clamoring for Howard to step in and coach the 2001 team based on what happened in 1983. You should write an e-mail to all the other P5 schools, to let them know about how so many of them are unaware of this hidden gem coaching down in Miami.

No. UM got sick of Booch trying to work them for a raise every time he won a game. They tired of his routine. He was constantly floating rumors about leaving for other jobs to weasel more out of UM.

This is dumb. Mario couldn’t hack it at FIU either and he’s got Oregon winning. If you have a problem with Butch’s age that’s fair but you can’t hold him to a different standard than somebody who did the exact same in Mario.

I’m not in favor of bringing Butch back but the way he’s portrayed on this board is ridiculous. He’s either the best coach to ever walk the sidelines or he’s the worst thing thing to happen to football.

Y’all just gotta be consistent man. And also realize some places you just can’t win at.

Ironically it’s the people that worship at his altar that have caused his name to get dragged in the mud.

Some have constantly had to point out his failures so people can stfu about hiring him again. His worshippers got so annoying that it somewhat turned people against him.

If people would stop bringing him up as though he’s Nick saban his name wouldn’t be mocked like it is now.

Blame his supporters

Some stellar work at halftime by that washed old goat Booch the Chooch. Takes a halftime lead and turns it into a 40 point L.

Hapless mess of a doddering old fool stealing checks from FIU and humiliating himself. He’s been a bigger disaster for FIU than that bridge.

Jesus Christ... the last time someone associated with FIU football got burned that bad a pregnant woman had to be arrested.

That's an ugly loss. Not quite as bad as JJ vs the Jaguars.
Still 4-4 for the year like Mannuro that the 16 yr slurpers love. Who knew we had so many FIU, Browns, UNC, OSU, Louisville, Dolphins, etc, etc. fans here.

As a historical reminder, Butch always chased the money and the next job. His old agent worked the phones 24-7 trying to get his name connected with every opening. Butch left Miami in a lurch and career ranks as mediocre ever since. Just the facts.

Ohh...not according to @UMFarArcher! Butch took a pay cut to coach in the city of Miami turning down all the top flight schools paying way more than $1.8 Million. This was so Butch could coach in a city he wants to retire in, but not retire while coaching because that would be coasting through the job.

If Butch were so good, a school like Oregon would have offered him.

He didn't write this SI article (for those with reading comprehension) https://www.si.com/vault/2001/02/12...d-bolted-for-a-big-money-deal-with-the-browns

After the 2000 season Davis had three years left on a
seven-year, $5.9 million contract. Relations between Davis and Miami athletic director Paul Dee had become strained in the previous six months, in part over Davis's concern that at $850,000 a year he was underpaid. "Butch listens to what other coaches tell him they're making, and he believes
them," Dee told SI in early November.
