All of this, well said. Agreed on all fronts.I’m iffy on this topic @DHucks
I nvr attended a HBCU, but as a Greek, I’ve been to plenty of HBCU campuses. I know the history of HBCU & what they mean to our community, but also an underrated illustrious history to sports.
Here’s y I’m iffy:
It’s a person’s job to move up the ladder. If Deion was at any other FCS level school, built them up, brought notoriety to their program, & then moved to a better financial opportunity, there would be no fuss. It would be a “way to go, Coach Prime.” For that, I have no issues.
On the other side, Deion does so much got **** talking; &, so for him to gas up HBCU’s & point his finger at other institutions along w/ the young men for choosing those institutions over HBCU’s, JUST to go to one of these same institutions he was critical of, well now he looks like a hypocrite. In essence, what he did was not altruistic vs. a ploy to bring notoriety to himself.
That’s where I have a problem. If Sanders would’ve accepted a HBCU job as HC, talked about its history, his pride in being able to carry on its legacy, etc. then made a jump, I don’t think the fall out or call outs would be that great. It’s the finger pointing, convincing of young men to come there vs. a P5 b/c of him & what he’s trying to re-establish at the HBCU level, then leave…that’s the sour taste.
This right here.IMO, it’s the difference between a “calling” and a “job.”
Prime Time made it sound like it was his calling to lift up HBCUs. That’s a lifetime effort…not a job that you leave at the first offer of a big paycheck.
But then, I’m just a middle-aged white dude who has no real dog in this fight.
Wish he'd stayed longer. That's my thing. At least until that initial class gets drafted or graduated. The reason we have HBCUs in the first place, is the lack of opportunity given to black folks to get a college education, so if the P5 schools start mining HBCUs for coaching talent, then that is a big win. Most of our coaches would love to coach in the “big time”, if we’re given the opportunity. How many head coaches of a HBCU have had the opportunity to leave and lead a P5 program? It’s a VERY short list. This is not normal! I look at Deion’s time at JSU as all positive. He put a light on football programs that had been long operating in the dark. What gets lost in all the Deion talk is that there are some good coaches and a few pieces of NFL talent there…. but it had to take a superstar to kick that wall down for coaches. For that reason, I’m thankful for Deion’s time at JSU.
Imagine what 5 more would've done, not just at Jackson but all of the HBCUs.Imo, he definitely lifted that school up. Not just on the field - be did amazing things for that program off the field - investing in facilities, etc. what he did in 5 years was more than anything that was done in its football history in quite some time.
So he bolted for something bigger and better…I don’t know how this should be news given all he did for that school.
Imagine what 5 more would've done, not just at Jackson but all of the HBCUs.
What happened is he is a good car salesman. LOLHaving breakfast this morning with Carter I mentioned Deion Sanders was going to be Colorado's next head coach, and he asked imo a really good question.
"Why is he leaving? What happened to the whole HBCU thing he was doing? If I were Travis Hunter I'd be mad."
Does the whole thing he did there and what he was pitching now look funny in the light now that he's going somewhere that he was trying to convince young black players not to go to? To come to a HBCU and lift it up?
Stop you're hitting on a good point and that's not the CIS way.I'm saying he pitched those kids on going to a HBCU instead of a FBS school to put on for OUR schools, then leaves to go to that very school.
I'm all for advancement personally, but the element of doing us, through us was the pitch, seems like he used that to springboard to be with them if that makes sense.
That's my point. If this was about his people, there's really no end. He went in to make a change and shed light, then left for Colorado. I REALLY hope he kills it there. Like double digit wins every season.Sure but to what end? I’m sure 5 more would have done wonders and 5 more even moreso. That’s the point.
You’re missing what op’s original post was about. Maybe those coaches seen straight thru Deion’s self serving nature. I was watching a interview with a local reporter on YouTube and the reporter mentioned he was in a frat. Deion’s next statement was that he didn’t know anything about frats and he only attended Me Phi Me.. ijs..Deion got nothing but push back while helping raise the profile for his obviously but all HBCU.. Some of them boys were salty for no reason.. Let them eat cake
I agree with you. I wish he had stayed a little longer. But IMO, He wasn’t gonna get offered at USF anytime soon, because of all of the “Prime Academy” bullshyt that the university presidents was looking into.Wish he'd stayed longer. That's my thing. At least until that initial class gets drafted or graduated.
If he did leave, I'd hoped for an opportunity than Colorado. If he went USF at least he's coming back to his home state.
Counter to this is…never claim you’re on a mission to save a community if you’re really just interested in moving upNever blame a man for moving up.
The one guy who was doing the most and really helping is gone. Eddie doesn't hold the same weight as Sanders. HBCUs really benefited from him being around. The TV time and all was going to continue to provide an opportunity to get the funds flowing to help with what you mentioned.
Because he was FoS. He was there to coach his kid. Now he is recruiting big boy football.I'm saying he pitched those kids on going to a HBCU instead of a FBS school to put on for OUR schools, then leaves to go to that very school.
