OT: Earthquakes

Worse natural disasters in US are floods, tornados and hurricanes. They cause the most loss of life and damage. Quakes in the US that result in loss of life and severe damage are quite rare. Check statistics over the past years comparing quake damage and loss of life in US. Now check stats of damage and loss of life of above mentioned natural disasters. Quakes are scary but most in US are not catastrophic.

Hate to say it like this, but just thank God the epicenter was in the middle of nowhere, but it’s also scary b/c the epicenter is in the middle of no where. Usually our quakes r in the middle of heavily populated areas.

The footage I've seen from a forest fire in my area last year was literally hellish. Nothing compares to the terror.

Heard a horrible story about a retired couple that tried to survive the last big one by staying semi submerged in their backyard pool as the world around them burned. I'll pass on that.

Although I imagine "the big one" in respect to earthquakes and collapsed buildings/skyscrapers/infrastructure and the ensuing fires is going to make something like those forest fires or even major hurricanes look like child's play.

All jokes aside; my sister and her family live in Victorville, which is about 30-45 min drive due south of the epicenter. She texted me this morning sounding afraid and concerned. Told me it was the strongest she’s felt since she’s been living out there..

Been through a few and to this day I am not sure if there was noise or if it was my imagination. Scary though, one I was getting dressed and the house moved and I feel down mystified. Got up, sat on a bed hugging my pregnant wife wondering what was going on.

That’s how you make human stew.

Fire probably evaporated the water and just burned them to ashes.

People are resourceful survivors, but gtfo is usually the best strategy.

Edit: just read the story.

They got caught by surprise.

The man survived but wife died of smoke inhalation.

****, to get through and lose a loved one like that had to be rough.

I’ve been through earthquakes, fire and hurricanes. Fires are worse to live through. The widespread destruction and aftermath worse for hurricanes. Earthquakes don’t last long but your imagination runs wild through it.
Try a flood sometime!

That's because the US hardly sees high magnitude earthquakes like South America does. These were both the strongest two quakes in a very long time. Anything stronger that's centered more towards the cities and it can get bad and quick.
