OT: Diversity

Interesting... I'm a Fan of Malcolm X and most people would frown on that because they see him as a radical racist... but he was a smart dude and once he realize that Religion had no racial limits.. meaning when he realize that he had white, red, yellow and brown Muslim brothers it caused him his life... I'm Christian but think that Malcom and Gandhi had some wisdom that we all could learn from..

Some Gandhi quotes that is relative to all Races, Gender and Religions:

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

"The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong."

"Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony. "

I am not well versed in this, but didn't Malcolm maintain the call for a separate black nation even after he broke with The Nation and became a Sunni?
Yes..but he wanted to establish his new movement on his own .. to avoid anymore friction with the Nation but even say he would eventually open to all Muslims... however he didn't live long enough to follow through with that...

Do you think the separate nation thing is good? America's greatness really came from the whole melting pot concept, not the newer "diversity" idea. DO you think blacks have ever actually melted into the pot in the way of the Irish, German, Italian ... immigrants of the pass have. There are clear differences but it makes a difference in how to deal with this.

In a sense the Civil War was between to different peoples. The north and midwest were settled by mostly Anglo-Saxons and other Germanic peoples from England and German states, while the South was mostly Celtic DNA. These groups were historic enemies and those differences came with them. North won and Southern culture, which included healthy dose of Black culture, was suppressed. To this day if you hear someone say, "yes mam, no mam" he probably Black or a Southern white. As a Southerner, I still have trouble putting up with Yankees. Heck, I bet I would be more comfortable hanging with you than the average New Yorker -- except my Mom, RIP, of course. Strange that football brings us together more than all the government programs. I guess it is another form of tribalism.

This is deep. Maybe too deep for this forum, but here goes...

as far as integration, all other ethnicities in the world can escape their oppression in America, but the AAs who were oppressed here and fought for the "equality" all groups now enjoy in America, can't go to a 'better place with more opportunity' than America. This leaves a residual cultural effect that isn't realized by most and gets obscured by the influx of motivated black immigrants from other countries, who come here to take advantage of all America has to offer.

I think this is what Malcolm was getting at back in the day; 'a separate black nation' to escape a place of oppression and re-invent a culture that wasn't respected. Again, for most all immigrants that place is the USA, but for an AA with roots in the Jim Crowe era and beyond, that may not be the case. That's why from an upward mobility standpoint a lot of immigrants who look AA, my have a different American experience or outlook, but get lumped in to the AA pot.. This really marginalizes people who sacrificed a great deal for this country, and is a under-appreciated aspect of why we have to say BLM.

This is a complex issue that needs more than a paragraph or 2, but I hope this makes some sense..

I'm a black male caribbean immigrant. Got my G.E.D. in Hollywood, A.A. in Pembroke Pines, B.S. & M.D. at the U, who now lives in NYC. I miss Miami every day and come back every opportunity I get. Cane to the core and die-hard Miami sports fan.

Respect to the Vets and peace to the folks in AZ. Phoenix in the house.

UknowWhat gives us many great threads. This is a deep one for sure. It is great we can discuss it without much hostility. You make huge point, I think, and not just the difference between blacks. Most of our ancestors, my certainly, came here as immigrants or illegal aliens but mostly by their volition. The descendants of slaves' ancestors where dragged here against their will. Forgetting everything else about discrimination and treatment, I have always wondered how big a difference that makes in their outlook. It is impossible for me to evaluate it since my, unfortunately were on the opposite position. Maybe OknowWhat can give us insight.

I honestly thought that there would only be a few takers willing to bite on this post... I was wrong... This post exceeded my expectations... I could tell by a number of threads, that this board was diverse, but I had no idea of how diverse. So glad for the participation. So many ages, races, religions, education level, professions and opinions all with a common desire... Putting some rings on the other hand. I said that I would stop posting once Shaq started school, but I probably will need a 12 step program to get off... I like the sight even more now.. I think it would be boring on this site if everyone agreed on every subject but with such a diverse group here... that will never happen... even if the subject was "Hurricanes Win Another NC..." some would say it was because of the D when others would know it was because of the O... but that would be a good convo to have and I can't wait. We are all different, but in one accord... UM Football.. Again thanks for the participation ... this post could create some new networks... and buddies to hang out with before/during and after a game in the stadium or in a pub or even in the living room... Go Canes.

imurcane I am not familiar with the different counties and cities in Atlanta, there too many.

Are you near Powder Springs/McEachern?

I figured this thread would eventually go to " that place " but it didn't. Sounds cheesy but I'm proud of you guys. Even the trolls showed restraint.

Great thread. I can't say I'm surprised at our diversity. IMHO Canes fans take a back seat to nobody in that regard, and CIS is as representative of Canes fans as I think you will find on the net. Except that pretty much everybody here has a Y chromosome.

CaneinPSL no longer lives in PSL. Martin County now. White male (*****/Mick). 43 years old. Liberal. Degree from FAU in Marine Bio. Planned on teaching but instead run a small manufacturing/distribution business in Riviera Beach. Born in WPB, but spent my HS and early college years in the Piedmont of NC. Played baseball and soccer for a small college in Asheville. HAD to get back to Fla. My family moved to WPB around 1920. My grandfather used to barnstorm S Fla and Cuba as a semi-pro baseball player with the Lake Worth Ramblers. He first started attending UM games in the 1940's when they started the baseball team. Going to Miami was the fun weekend family trip. Drive down US 1 for Hurricanes baseball or football, and a stop at the Venetian pool. Hobbies outside of the Canes include playing soccer, fishing, and SCCA Club racing.

UknowWhat I was 92Y as well. The military and choosing that MOS literally were the two of the best decisions that I ever made.

It opened ALOT of doors for me that as a kid I could not have ever imagined.

jaycane yeah man those were crazy times growing up there. My uncle knows the Rolle family very well.

How is life out in Killeen? I never got to get stationed or visit there. I was stuck out in Benning and Bragg.

MovingZen>white>computer programming and repair>ex Navy>born and raised in Miami but now live in Charleston SC> lifelong Dolphins and Canes fan but also like the Heat and Marlins. I've considered giving up on the Dolphins and just becoming a Carolina fan because wtf is the problem with that organization? Anyway, cold beer or whatever you're drinking to all my fellow Canes fans!

Also in Charleston. *** from Miami originally. Radiologist. Die hard Hurricane. Love the Heat, Dolphins, Yankees and Marlins.

I'm in Charleston as well

Yes. If I were going to high school I would go to Marietta High. One of my side jobs has been teaching drivers education. I spent a lot of time in Powder Springs near McEachern.

The Gamecock fans are the worse. I lived there for a few years, and they were so proud of selling out their stadium while being the worst d1 team in the nation along with being big rednecks.

African and American, at life's golden anniversary, Bull City born, Morehouse College grad, NCCU grad, and Howard University grad, Ph.D. in History, research, teach, and write about the African and African Diaspora history including the construction of and politics of racial identity, which makes this thread a treasure for me! LOL! Also teach US History. Community activist and youth coach for basketball (mainly) and more recently football. Currently on faculty at a university in NC. Been a Cane since '83 when I saw the Canes play Duke at Wally Wade. Canes hung 35 or 42 on them by halftime. Been hooked since. I generally say that if people don't know that I'm a Cane, then they don't know me. Silver and Black at the NFL level. Been on that train since the 70s. Played basketball in my youth, as almost all kids did growing up on Tobacco Road, but not as big of a fan of the game today because iso and the two-man game have taken over at all levels. The fluid poetry of motion in basketball offenses has become a bunch of statues who line the perimeter swaying back and forth waiting for the man with the ball to make a juke move or jack a three. Like many folks I watch the Championship round games and the NCAA tournament.

UKnowWhat when were you at Morris Brown?

To the Cane flashing his bank balance, please give toward the IPF. LOL.

Firefighter, from the muck, male, Caucasian, Canes phins heat Marlins.

Got some friends from the Muck... Alonzo Allen and Leonard and Lionel Campbell... went to school with them in Atlanta.

Im in Atlanta. Where about did you go to school?
