Only one man can save the Canes. I'll give ya one guess.....

The next hire needs to be a can't miss. In the likelihood that the hire will need to be cheap once again or even cheaper, Butch Davis is the only answer. And, as far as the admin is concerned, he is not unhirable.

Several wild assumptions. I don't get this myth that we can pay competitively. We've proven we will pay competitively for both HCs and for assistant coordinators. And to say Butch is the only answer is silly. Many other options. Not saying it's a bad option but certainly not the only answer.

Not really assumptions.

Shannon and Golden were paid under 2.5 million dollars. That is very much below the competitive level for a top tier coach. We haven't paid big since Coker and Butch, Dennis, and Jimmy were not paid at an elite level. Only Howard really was given big money.

Look back at the post and reread what I specifically said. Butch is the only answer that is a proven winner and cheap. If you have an alternate suggestion that meets that criteria, I'd love to hear it.

As far as other option, the program cannot afford to make another chance hire by selecting a coordinator or an up and comer at a lower tier school. We need to hire away another big time school's coach or somebody else who has succeeded at a high collegiate level and is available. Jim Leavitt comes to mind.

Teddy does the BOT consider Leavitt unhirable?

I'm not going to say unhirable, but he has more of an uphill battle than Butch does. He didn't almost kill his players like Schiano did in Tampa Bay, but assaulting them is still costly as far as the admin is concerned.

What are the chances of going after a guy like Jedd Fisch? I like him, I think he is a great offensive mind. I think he has a great understanding of the level of organization, he must know the community a bit. He wants to be an NFL HC some day and here would be a great spot to gain that experience.... And he does not have any bad history anywhere.... maybe because he left after one year? Or maybe Butch could bring him back this year as OC when Jax cleans house lol? I think if we let AG go then we need to completely CLEAN HOUSE.. But thats just me...

Ideally, we bring back Butch as a stop gap between our present and our future. What does this mean, we allow Butch to select his coordinators and Off/Def philosophies, culture ect. He hand picks his successor which ideally is one of his coordinators, and give us a good 3 to 4 years to groom that successor and impart as much of his knowledge as he can when it comes to identifying talent and the best way in which to use that talent.

He then retires as coach, but stays on as an "advisor", which essentially just spots local talent and/or those gems that he has been notoriously known for doing.

Butch will not be a high paid coach because of his perceived transgressions, thus, allowing us to bring him back on the cheap and right the ship that has been off course since he left for the Browns.

This isn't how things work. Burch would get at least what Golden is getting today. Butch has actually done something in his HC career. We are paying Golden because of the cloud... think about that for a minute.

Based off your statement, even if Butch was paid what Golden is paid, that is still not a high salary for a HC of a major D1 program. Having said that, it is my belief based off of his comments that he would take less than 2.5 a year just to be in the seat again.

The only person who can save the Canes at this point is Blake James. But hes too ***** made to pull the string on this staff. So unfortunately, the players and us as fans just have to learn to accept mediocrity for the foreseeable future.

I love Butch but I fear his return would be more John Robinson than Bill Snyder. There would be a lot of potential options, including younger names.

I truly don't understand the butch Davis hype.

Dude underachieved his whole time here. Won 0 national championship. **** of a recruiter but he would've never won the big game. Remember that super talented UNC Squad he had yep blew it. Y'all keep screaming for Butch.

Ruffin McNeil would be a more viable and realistic option

That super talented UNC squad that was down 7 of their top players to suspension? Yea, I don't blame him for underachieving that year.

9-3 every year except the one 5-6 year. And the other year they were 11-1 and finished #2 in the country.

He left for the NFL and his team the next year won the National Championship. Easily.

Came back to college and coached UNC 8-4 every year except his last year. Developed more 1st round picks than Miami and FSU during that span.

Let me go on to further say that I think hiring Butch lacks vision. However, I haven't seen our team win convincingly for 14 years. I am grasping for a hint of what used to be.

Dmoney, forgive me if it is posted somewhere else, but do you have a gut feeling one way or the other about Golden being here next season? Have you heard any rumblings?

Out of left field let me propose Rob Ryan. The man knows defense has enough experience to develop in to a fine HC. He would certainly hire a top offensive mind to run the other side of the ball. Most importantly the players on both side will play there *** off for him.
