On Ny Carr...Staying at UM

Is Ny Carr truly a slot?

The few times he played I seem to recall he was split wide (as well as in the slot), but I could be wrong. The reason I ask is that I’m trying to determine how does his return impact our pursuit of others in the Portal. If he’s a slot WR, then it “might” impact Peña’s recruitment. If he’s versatile and can play multiple positions, then it may have no impact whatsoever.

We have Pena and Johnson (the Cincy WR) coming in for visits over the next few days. Both are slot receivers. To my knowledge, there have been no links between Miami and an outside receiver, despite the glaring need.
To me he's an outside WR? I brought this up when he left (pushed out) that his natural position wasn't at slot...enough talent there already

But he's back so we'll see

I’ll repeat what I said in the OP:

College free agency is a wild process. Lots of players jumping in and out, agents, and other factors.
We're starting to see a pattern with these Miami Portal departures: talented players who had coaches genuinely excited at one point, but plateaued in their development and struggled to get on the field this spring.

Carr is a guy I loved in spring '24. He got open consistently and made plays from Cam Ward and others. Over time, his inconsistency became a concern and his body was slow to develop. This led to some nagging injuries, including missing significant time this spring (like Josh Horton and Zaquan Patterson). Carr's absence allowed guys like Malachi Toney, Josh Moore and Daylyn Upshaw to thrive, and his '24 classmate JoJo Trader jumped to another level physically and in terms of consistent production.

Given his price tag, the urgency of modern college football, and Carr's eagerness to play, the sides parted ways. I never heard a bad word about him, and he has a chance to produce at his next stop if he physically matures. In my opinion, this would be a player to target in the Portal for other teams.
Here’s the whole post. To me when I originally read the bolded it implied Carr had plateaued and the staff asked him to take a pay cut possibly even so they could reallocate those funds to players who are more ready to have an immediate impact. If that’s the case and Given that he’s back it leads me to believe it was mutual agreement to let him test the open market and see if it was a fair offer before submitting to it.

I could be misreading you now but are you saying that not only that the kid had plateaued but he wanted more money which he didn’t get in the market and now he’s back for his original offer?

One point to pass along: I’m told Carr was not paid more money or anything like that to to return. After entering the Portal, he determined that Miami was his best option to develop.

Still a lot of potential there with added weight and physicality. Miami will continue to seek both depth and impact, ready-made talent.
Can we get him in a different jersey?

A lot of people said he wasn’t that good when he got in the portal, how do you guys feel now lol
Good considering the current market. Helps he’s been 2 years in the system as well.

For purposes of fund allocation I’d rather use pena money on other positions.

IMO, Carr is the perfect example of the type of "project" recruit we want. He had the physical and athletic traits you want in a receiver, but wasn't developed enough to play top-P4-level ball right away. What he really needs to do is to get with handlebar-mustache man and develop more physicality, and get into his playbook and working with his QBs to improve his routes. Doubt he's a major contributor this season. But in '26, 2 years in, he'll be ready to bust loose and be a core contributor.

You could take it that way or, he flashed but then chose to not continue to work at the level that was expected, hence plateauing.

Or he came in last year and flashed vs the most abysmal secondary we have had in decades then "plateaued" once we flipped the room and greatly improved our secondary hence making more difficult to get open consistently.

I still really like the kid and I'm glad he's back. Let him continue to develop.
