On Judd Anderson

View as article
I know nobody likes this guy, he’s a dork, he doesn’t know anything, he hates Miami blah blah blah…..but the fact of the matter is **** near every kid we recruit follows on3 in some aspect, and this is the optics that are out there on this class and specifically the QB position.

They did this last year too, dawg. They hate us. It was the Billy Napier show in FL for a while, they were getting ERRYYBODY and Mario was behind on recruiting. Look at how many top kids have visited, how many parents with them this spring. Watch the spring game attendance. I would be surprised if this narrative hasn't been flushed down the drain by the time were all roasting weenies on the 4th of July, if not sooner.
Or I dunno, maybe this will be the first year in Mario's entire career where he recruits poorly and the roof will cave in. :nba-kobe-bryant-upset:

It's not a strawman, it's the root of the argument.

I said if we're going to spend big on QBs, we should get proven Portal kids. They're safer bets and other positions are harder to find in the Portal. Somebody disagreed and said that Top 100 QBs are a "good investment." @Cryptical Envelopment nuked that argument pretty quick, noting that 70% of those kids transfer and are often beaten out by lower-ranked players. I also noted that teams win championships without elite QB recruits (including the past four years) but never win without elite DLs.

As far as your list, it includes Mac Jones (a three star), Tua (who played two quarters) and Cam Newton (a transfer). But the rest of the post reveals another issue. You said:

Are you suggesting that Mahomes and Herbert weren't better players in college than, say, an AJ McCarron? They were a million times better. McCarron just played on a better team. QB is unique in that the truly elite players are almost all non-elite recruits. You don't see that at DL with guys like Jeffrey Simmons, Dexter Lawrence, Chris Jones, Myles Garrett and the Bosas (all five stars).

That doesn't mean a blue-chip QB isn't more likely to succeed than a non-blue chip-- of course they are. That's true at every position. But blue-chip QBs bust more than other positions, and the truly elite guys are usually the product of evals. That tells me the smart play is to pay big money for the proven commodities and chase cheap upside in high school kids.

Jesus De Christo.

Did I not say if u’re going to have a 3-star QB, u better have a rock star RB behind them or a team full of stars around them?

My point in bringing up both Herbert & Mahomes is despite putting up great #’s, they couldn’t carry their teams to victory. Remember, the narrative is Mario held Herbert back; I don’t necessarily agree w/ that, but tis the narrative.

Listen, I can put up all the graphics showing u’re in a much better position w/ a blue chip QB than a 3-star QB. I can say that since 2004, 67% of all Heisman winning QBs were blue chips. I can put up a graphic showing the overwhelming W/L record of starting blue chip QBs vs. 3 star QBs. I know none of that will matter.

I’ve seen this board justify so many diamond in the rough prospects that I’ve become numb to it.

If ppl r going to die on the hill of Judd being a QB1 type, go ahead. It’s just the hypocrisy of this board that continues to moan & groan about not being able to keep up w/ the haves in CFB, but rush to defend every freggin diamond in rough prospect & the mental gymnastics needed to do so. So again, unless we’re going to pull in 5-star running backs, & elite WRs to compliment a lower ranked QB, or somehow Lincoln Riley or Chip Kelly’s magic Playbook show up at our front door, I ain’t really got time for it. If Judd is running a 4.3 like Lamar, sign me up.

I specifically said "as the only QB in the class", which thus far he is. Also the staff tweeted out "QB1", which is an odd thing to do if you're sure he's the second QB in the class.

Mario has had very mixed results in the portal, especially on offense. You can expect him to save multiple years of failure with HS recruits by having multiple years of success with portal recruits, but I'm not. There's no evidence of it.

There's nothing political about my response. If you're making the same point on page 35 as you did on 5, that feels a lot more like an agenda. Using extreme examples as a proof case does as well, whether its "look 3* QBs win games too" or "look UGA did it so can we". Saying its easier to with elite DL isn't controversial, but it's also not all that was
The second half of the post wasn’t really intended at you but more the last 24 hours for myself. I make comment and the point is completely missed or I’m defending Mario. Which is rich.

Any team that wins big is going to need a team full of studs. That's just the nature of the game. The only QB I've ever seen truly carry a team to the title was Cam Newton, and even he played with a superstar DL in Nick Fairley.

I have my own questions about Judd, separate from his ranking. If he doesn't put up numbers as a senior, the Jack Allison/Art Sitkowski comparisons will be hard to avoid. If he does put up numbers, he probably gets his fourth star (like Kaaya) and this whole discussion changes.

The bottom line is that we need another Top 10 class and we need to do better at DT, WR and CB than we did last cycle. If that doesn't happen, we are in trouble no matter who the QB is.

It's not all a conspiracy, my man. We wanted him, he had some other really good options, we recruited the **** out of him, won, he committed to us on the visit, he announced. You think the baseline, the norm, would be to **** with him and tell him he can't announce yet? To give him a reason to think that everything we've been telling him about how bad we want him is BS? A kid we really want? It's not all black helicopters.

As far as the coaches showing kids film on Judd and why they think he is big time... I should ******* hope so!!! :)

There's plenty of kids that are told to hold off their public announcements for whatever reason and promised a spot. It's not a conspiracy. It happens all the time. We are currently his best offer. Again, we have no recruiting momentum and give the green light to a development project QB to announce right before a highly rated QB we lost out on. If you can't see how that's not a good look for how things are going and a reason for many individuals to be concerned I'm not sure what to tell you.

I agree w/ this.

Yeah, when you tell a kid to "hold off" you're telling him his offer isn't committable. That's the "whatever reason." It's playing with fire.

2022 Coastal winner UNC was hard after him, as was 2021 Coastal winner Pitt who has won 20 games over the last two seasons. We haven't exactly been tearing up the league. Both of their starting QB's were highly successful and are in/going to the NFL. This kid had options, and the word is his recruitment is starting to blow up. Being on him early helped us a lot, as did his desire to be in a cosmopolitan environment with business options.

I hope he pans out.

I think the only reason we have a Judd debate is because we have no clue what the QB board looks like. Their is obvious fear that Judd will end up the lone QB in this class. Whether you like, love or hate Emory you remember the talk that he wouldn't be the only QB last year. No matter how hard the insiders push the 2 QB narrative it falls on deaf ears because we continue to bring in backup quality portal players. I don't get why anyone would believe if two 5 star QBs that were Heisman contenders entered the portal we'd have a shot at either. If Judd truly ends up as a piece of the QB class and not the piece then all of this will be irrelevant.

idk about this because even when Rashada was committed 5 star WRs weren't lining up to play here either...I think this had more to do with Mario and Gattis combo than Emory Williams impact just like Ohio State's resume with WRs was more of the impact than the 5 start QBs
It has everything with the offensive **** show that was on display in 2022. Getting rid of Gattis was to a degree like flushing the toilet. But the entire world still needs to see ON THE FIELD that the offensive scheme and play calling a). put up points (TD's not FG's) and b). there is a very strong vertical passing component to the offense. If that can be demonstrated then recruits who fall in love with the new facilities, the weather, the babes, won't have a reason for not committing.

But doesn’t a higher profile qb make at least the WR part of that top 10 class easier? Sure, having a successful offensive season will help, but what are WR recruits going to think about a 2024 qb room of Brown, Emory, Judd and potentially “Portal QB X”?

Real question and not your gaslighting. Say for example we had a good team put together but the QB room is lacking and that was this offseason, do u think we would 1) have a chance with a player like Sam Hartman(corrected), and 2) would he be good enough to lead us to a ACC title and playoff birth? Because thats what i think of. Not needing to steal a Heisman trophy candidate.

Lol a Josh Newberg video is going to affect the recruits that Miami is recruiting the **** out of and are visiting Miami’s campus and hearing Mario’s vision/message?

Just saying he's not the only one saying things like this. We have 1 football player committed, and he's a nobody (in terms of ranking, or local stature). Not a single kid is going to come to Miami to play with Judd Anderson, at this point.

And of course I'm not saying that Newberg's opinion or a 1 minute video is the end all, be all. It's not Armageddon, as Cribby said, although you'd think it was by reading this board. I'm just saying that we need another QB, and most people are saying we'll get one, although who that guy might be, who the **** knows. And on April 10th, we have 1 commit.

QB is the hardest position to evaluate and project, we all know that. But at least all the big, winning programs are signing elite ones. If they bust, if they get beat out by lower ranked kids, if they get beat out by transfers, so be it. But they're getting the highly ranked kids, who attract other highly ranked kids on the offensive side of the ball.

So if we recruit a 5-star or high 4-star QB and pair him with Judd, and Judd beats him out, awesome. But this kid can't be the only QB you sign. Literally no other elite programs are doing it this way, what makes us think we can?
Not only can he not be the only QB we sign....we have to sign someone else that's extremely more talented than him.

We have 2 c/o 2024 football commits. Not too long ago we suffered through Bubba "Buckshot" Baxa and Zach "Kicks it Back" Feagles. If that recent misery wasn't enough to teach you the importance of specialists to a football program then that lesson may elude you forever.

We ain’t having a 35 page conversation about “what the data really says” on QB quality if there was any reason to be confident about this take — as the only QB in the class. Nobody had to defend Emory Williams (who looked a lot better as a 3* than this cat) when the class also had Rashada.

If your QB classes over 3 years are Jacurri Brown, Emory Williams, and Judd Anderson, you would not seem to be serious about winning football in the modern era, no matter how good your DL recruiting is. Especially with one freaking class. Plus, if “winning in the trenches” is essentially all that matters, why didn’t he go nuts on DL last year too? Once again, the current state of the program is cast as “all according to plan”, even if it’s unrecognizable from the previous plan.

We are not UGA, nor are we close to UGA. They’ve also recruited QB at an elite level, they just happened to have a walk on who broke every mould known to man when he was surrounded by the best talent in the country. UGA is evidence of nothing.

It’s amazing to me that Mario still has defenders on this. His offensive recruiting is abysmal outside of OL and RB, he seems to think QB is less than the most important position in the sport, and some of y’all are so invested in him being successful here you’re calling his absurd approach to talent acquisition “reasonable according to the data”.

Devaluing the QB by saying “you can win without an elite player there” is quintessential Miami over the last 20 years: making winning harder instead of easier. Can you win a ship without a stud QB? Yes, but why on earth would you try? It makes it exponentially harder to win without one and exponentially easier to win with one. Miss me with the “it can be done” line, instead explain to me why any HC in his right mind would intentionally make his path to success more difficult by not getting a proven baller at the most important position on the field? Literally should be job 1 of every class. Instead Mario whiffed 2 years straight. Guy can’t even take credit for Brown, kid was already committed.

But again, Miami makes winning harder, not easier. Mario called TVD the best QB in the country in his introductory presser, then proceeded to shackle him with an OC and scheme that turned his brain inside out. Freaking one year later and we’re still hearing “he's a great fit for the style of offense Mario wants to run.” What the heck does that mean? I’d like a kid who’s a terrible fit for Mario’s O, because thus far that kid would be TVD. I mean is MC an OC or an HC? When did he last call plays? Is someone else in the country imitating the vaunted “Mario Cristobal O”. The man got a tree? We have local high school coaches on here, has the Mario Cristobal offensive coaching clinic sold out? Y’all dying for his insight on how to score 10 more ppg, can’t leave without picking the schematic mind that brought you the lowest point totals in Miami history?

If we’re covering his back on QB crooting, shouldn’t we have, I dunno, a playoff or something appearance on his resume to refer to? Or any evidence at all that his offensive philosophy is something other than a net negative?

The truth is that having a mediocre QB makes winning harder, not easier. Just like having a mediocre HC does. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Too many people are trying wayyyyy too hard not to understand this.

It’s my biggest criticism of the program since the natty. We make winning harder instead of easier, at every turn. Now he’s doing it with QBs. Why?

We actually have people arguing that our path to elite status is not landing a single elite QB, that can impact all other positions around him.

But instead spending big time money to land 5+ of them a recruiting class just for two units.

They actually think Miami is better off building “waves of elite talent” across the DL and OL. Something so difficult to do there is only like two programs in the country that can do it, and you will have to outspend them to do it.
