Whatever the reason is we fail on third down to me which is a personel issue which is starting to get fixed with the influx of talent.
But the oline is generally good on the first 2 downs. Can’t understand why they are so terrible on 3rd down other than them not having the want to or man I just Don’t know

Our oline is not all bad but on 3rd down we definitely need improvements

Can you find our 3rd down pass completion %? Interested in that one.

Got so frustrated with this last season. If we needed 3, we got 2. Even when we converted, it would be something like a QB sneak and we'd just barely get it.

I cannot remember the last time I had confidence in our short yardage run game. For years, 3 and 2 or 1, seems like we get stuffed every time. No push from the oline.

Third downs have been bad for a while but last year was bottom of the barrel type stuff. I think they were 126 out of 130 in third down conversions? Lots of improvement needed all around.

FINAL AP RANK | TEAM | RUSHING YPG RANK
-------------------------------------------------------------
1 ALABAMA 10
2 UGA 9
3 OKLAHOMA 26
4 CLEMSON 34
5 OH ST. 15
6 UCF 29
7 WISCONSIN 22
8 PENN ST 54
9 TCU 57
10 AUBURN 21
11 NOTRE DAME 8
12 USC 39
13 MIAMI 79
14 OK. ST. 42
15 MICH. ST 59

We were a full 20 ranks behind the 2nd worst rushing team in the top 15 and several of those other teams' opponents tried and failed to stop the run and force the QB to throw.

148.5 YPG and that's WITH Rosier's 36 RYPG. Without factoring that in we were 115th.

That goes back to the glory days even. 3 and long was okay; 3rd and short, not so much.

What's disturbing is how well they ran the ball on first and second down. Was the line only blocking on the first two downs and then forgetting what to do on third? Or was the opponent keying on the run more?

Miami averaged 5.1 yards per carry on the season (including sacks) and their opponent averaged 3.5 ypc. Yet somehow opponents averaged a more rushing first downs per game than Miami did. Short yardage has got to be improved and they have to make opponents pay for going cover 1 or zero on third and 4.

Not sure those stats paint an accurate picture.
If we run 10 times in a game on 1st down for 65 yards, that's 6.5 per carry. Not bad. But if one of those runs was for 35 yards, then the other 9 attempts average out to 3.33 per carry. Not great.
My eyes say we couldn't run the ball consistently last year. I don't care what the "stats" say. What I saw with the running game more often than not was boom or bust. 20 yard carry or stuffed at the line.
the reason that gets worse on 3rd and 4th down is not because they forgot how to block, but because everyone is keying on the run on short and 3rd or 4th. There is a lot less wiggle room for the boom plays in the boom or bust nature of our running game.

My guess is if you broke down the runs by direction there would be much higher YPC on outside runs vs. inside. There were games where the offense sustained success on power sweep plays but the inside run game was nonexistent for most of the season. So a bad inside running team trying to pound it inside on a loaded box = especially bad 3rd/4th down YPC.

Just need more consistency, as I said multiple times our oline isn’t as bad as people say it is, did they struggle in 3 of the games? Yes but they were solid for majority of the season

Malik rushed for almost 500 yards, he probably helped those rushing #s on broken plays. Our O-Line was physically weak.

Absolutely. We go from 79th to 115th in rushing without Malik's production. A guy like Kaaya who took a lot of negative yards on sacks...we'd have been dead last. Averaging 5 yards on 3rd down means not a **** thing when your average 3rd down distance is 7 yards.

3.6 yards before contact trailing only 2 teams before contact in the acc. One of them is ga tech

Let’s not get it twisted; our O-Line was atrocious...but some of that vanilla ice cream play calling didn’t help, either. But regardless, go back and look at that Clemson film and see our OL have many blown plays. Same w PITT.
