"TOS and BWI, working in tandem, have confirmed through multiple sources, some close to Golden, that an agreement in principle has been reached between Golden and Penn State that would make him the Nittany Lions next coach."
"And barring a drastic turn of events today, something the equivalent of the three special teams turnovers against Virginia Tech that sent Miami's 2013 season spiraling downward, Golden will be introduced as Bill O'Brien's replacement at a press conference at Penn State on Monday. "
"The main reason is believed to be that Golden and Penn State want to maximize exposure of the move by making the announcement on the day of the national championship game."
"A prominent Penn State booster also told TOS and BWI that Golden is likely to offer jobs on his staff to wing man Mark D'Onofrio, also a former Penn State player, and receivers coach Brennan Carroll, who would move back to tight ends if he accepted and have a prominent recruiting role like he has at Miami."
"Sources have told CaneSport that former Hurricane Coach Jimmy Johnson has already been contacted about possibly assisting in the Miami search. Board of Trustees member Bernie Kosar, who was part of the Golden hiring process, also will likely be involved along with James."
"CaneSport has confirmed that former Miami coach Butch Davis, former Miami defensive coordinator and Rutgers and Tampa Bay Bucs Coach Greg Schiano, former Miami offensive coordinator and Cleveland Browwns Coach Rob Chudzinski and former FIU Head Coach and Miami assistant Mario Cristobal are all likely to apply for the position. Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is another likely candidate to pursue the job.......Vanderbilt Coach James Franklin, the pretty prom date this year in coaching searches, would be strongly interested in being considered. But Franklin already earns $3 million and that could be too pricey for Miami. The other coaches are probably available for $2 million or less."

Golden’s record versus ranked team since he’s been a head coach.
Overall record 3-12

At Temple, Golden was 4-25 against teams with winning records, one of those being a D-1aa team.

2011:

L Virginia Tech 38-35
W North Carolina 30-24

L Virginia Tech 42-24
L Duke 48-30

L Louisville 36-9

At Miami, Golden is 7-12 against teams with winning records. It is important to note that of these teams who finished with winning records, only 1 of these teams has finished better than 7-6. That was Georgia Tech in 2011 who finished 8-5.

Overall, Al Golden is 11-37 versus team have who finished the season with winning records, and of those 11 wins, only 3 have finished above 7-6 (Georgia Tech 2011, Connecticut 2010, and Navy 2009).

You **** punched him so hard that he looks like a sock puppet on your arm.

This will not end well if he stays. The bond of trust that once was with players, coaches, recruits, and fans is forever broken. Even if Dorito is let go, Al will remain salty about it and the animosity will build toward the administration for forcing it. Even if Butch or Narduzzi were hired as the new DC, which would probably never happen, this thing cannot be salvaged. AL dug his own grave on this one. There shouldn't be anyone feeling sorry about anyone else. Tough decisions come with tough consequences. This is one of the most critical crossroads UM football has come across in a while. I hate to be negative and a debbie downer, but if the right decisions are not made in the next 24-48 hours, UM football may fall further into the black hole of irrelevance, maybe to never crawl out of again.

Did you take this from a USC message board in the 90's? Hire the right guy. All it takes.

Hearing that we should expect an announcement on Monday or Tuesday. The search has been narrowed to two candidates, James Franklin and Al Golden. PSU has met with both (and their agents). The prevailing thought is Franklin is a better coach and Golden a better recruiter. The source said they could not discern a preference for either and thought both to be great choices. All other names being thrown out are not in serious contention.

FYI - Munchak is not being considered as much this time around. Apparently they want to go with a younger coach. Munchak had verbally agreed to take the PSU job in December of 2011, however, Bud Adams (owner of Titans) threatened to sue Penn St. if they took "his" coach. Penn St did not want to deal with a lawsuit as this was in the heat of the Sandusky scandal and then moved on. If you recall, Joyner exuded confidence heading into the holidays in 2011 but this all broke down during holidays. Some top guys stopped their vacations early to come back and find a coach which ultimately led to OB. I personally thought Munchak would be the first consideration, but it was made clear to me that it wasn't.

If it's really between Golden & Franklin, you have to think Al is on his way out here.

Franklin's ties to Vandy's rape allegations combined with Golden being a Penn State disciple have to put Al over the top.

Please let this happen.

Anyone ever thought that this could be a publicity stunt by Golden to attract attention to Miami in a positive light?

Al is on the joe rose show tomorrow morning.. In case you may have forgotten

Yeah because no one has ever canceled an appearance on a stupid radio show before. And if he goes on that definitely precludes him from being hired by PUS.

This is going to drag on. PSU is going to interview Franklin, and then Munchak. I don't expect this to end before mid week to be honest.

Said it early in the process.....

Did you just quote yourself? Don't be that guy...Don't be that guy.

I keep reading these threads because there are gems like this one in the rubble.

Why is PSU interviewing Munchak and Franklin today. Does not sound like a done deal to me. Maybe Al and his agent overestimated his value. I don't think that Golden is PSU first choice. Oh we'll it's all speculation. We may be stuck with Golden...and DO.

I wont get in a Randy vs Al debate but in 2009 Randy's team faced 4 ranked teams to start the season and got out of there 3-1 including a road win @ FSU to open the season... not too shabby although we imploded @ Champs sports bowl that year

I agree with the first part. If you call a 20-14 loss to wisconsin imploding then what do you call a 36-9 loss to Louisville? Golden is not fit for miami. He is constantly losing to teams with more than 8 wins.... This isnt temple

I don't know if you were at that game, but I was and I will call it an implosion. Wisky ran the ball at will on us and we had no answer on offense. Our D kept us in the game basically...the score may have looked close and we had a chance towards the end but it was a horrible performance, but I will agree with you the L'ville game was a f'in abomination which I witnessed first hand as well

Franklin has NFL buzz. Three more teams want to interview him. He's holding. Penn State better learn their lesson and take the college coach in Golden.

LOL!!! I just got off the phone with Gruden's agent, he said that The deal is pretty much done, and that we should be hearing about it by Wednesday. If it doesn't happen, I would be surprised, but stranger things have happened!!

All great news for the Canes. The phoenix will finally rise again. We are about to see what made Miami Miami -- the best attacking defenses CFB had ever seen. We always had great offenses, but it was those defenses that won our championships.

We comin'.

AL would be the safe chouce for PSU... keeps the local Paterno crowd happy and will stay for a long time!! Franklin will be gone at the first call from the NFL.

Yep. And I get the feeling Franklin is just trying to parlay his success and the heat around him into a raise or a better job. I doubt that he's all that serious about Ped State. That place is going to be a toilet fire for awhile, and he's not a Ped State "guy" so he won't get cut any slack. Also, not being a Ped State guy, he would likely use them as a stepping stone if he had any success there just like O'Brien did.

If interviews take place with Munchak and Franklin I doubt there is an offer. Really who the **** knows.

Personally love the overreaction and the lack of understanding how this is business as usual and a business decision, one that anyone of us would do if we were in Golden's shoes, as well. Let's not hypocritical here, cus in our lives we have or would do with our careers. Understand this "game of football" is not a sport and sure as **** had nothing to do with amateurism, that's the biggest myth and BS most fans have been suckered into buying. THIS IS A BUSINESS, sooner you accept an understand that the better you'll be. I am just hoping for a quick resolution either way.

My work is done, as I am just contributing to get this thread to 5k posts and I'm sure some of you guys will pounce!

just for ***** and giggles, what in the **** could the positive light possibly be? If he is not announced as the PSU coach, then the story becomes that Golden wanted OUT of UM to return to his alma mater, and was turned down. Not sure how that could possibly be a good thing for UM.

Penn State is not in a "win now" mode. They are looking for somebody to help them ride out the sanctions and rebuild in about 3 to 4 years after that. Al would be a perfect fit.

Franklin on the other hand is on his way up and will be looking to move on to NFL in the next 3 years.

This. Franklin is headed to better pastures than PSU.
