I was born in 85 and didn’t get to experience the 80s and early 90s like some of you guys!

Now that I’m on the mend with the liver I’d like to really go back and deep dive watch it. Should I start at a certain period and go linear?

Really start with the Schennly championship team? I want to watch all of the games I can.

Who are the players that I should watch for that are not household names that weee foundations to those programs?

If you could go back to 1980, that would be a great starting point.

HOWEVER, the Supreme Court case of NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma was not decided until 1984, so you will probably have access to a lot more games (ESPN or wherever) from 1985 onward.

I enrolled in 1986, and I'm pretty sure that all of our biggest games had national broadcasts, either on a broadcast network or on ESPN. Florida, Oklahoma, and FSU (plus the Fiasco Bowl against Pedo State) are definitely games that get replayed a lot.

Hope you’re on the mend!

I can still get a lot of games— and ones worth watching via YouTube from my frosh year 1985 and beyond.

Some things you’ll see & hear, which you wouldn’t today:

* All players wore ginormous shoulder pads and some wore neck rolls (remember those?)

* our wideouts under Jimmy played in a 3 pt stance across the field- like the old flanker position in NFL from the 60s

* vast majority of snaps came with the QB under center

* the broadcast graphics will make you laugh out loud

* the Orange Bowl- big games like OU with the Boz, and the pay back game against ND in 89 are the loudest I’ve ever been to life- but it comes through over the telecast

* “bye bye Bosworth” we hate to see you go” clearly audible during OU game in the mid 4th Q- student section started it and the entire stadium joined

* same for 1989 ND game we were up late and all you could hear was “f-you Brent” and it was clearly audible— he even popped his head out of the TV booth and waved while we were trolling him!

*Another crowd chant when we dominated a big opponent was the “nah nah nah nanah- hey hey hey- good bye”

* incessant PA on the field from the yamma yamma man- could hear all his normal cheers “skit skat let’s go to the rat” and “it’s great be a Miami hurricane” Among others

* tons of student section TV shots from sideline after scoring plays or coming into and out of commercial breaks (you just get crowd general shots these days with few student section cameos

*gang tackling was savage and a staple in every game- defenses were ferocious

* the weapons on both sides of the ball- they rotated RBs like we do today- receivers weren’t all prolific but we had a bunch of them and they all caught passes…

* the depth and play of back ups was sick

-Enjoy

I’ve seen a lot of the big games multiple times just never tried to reach watch every game possible from as early as possible.

Starting with the 80 Beach Bowl UM (8-3) vs Vatech (8-3)

Kelly at QB is the only one that looks like a D1 player today. UM average weight of OL for the game 245 lbs. With the OL man himself Kehoe starting at LG. In my prime I could have played on this 80 team. Kelly has a cannon though!

Anybody else on this 80 team that flashed? @DMoney @TheOriginalCane @Shooter McGavin

Sh**- just before my time… I don’t know well enuf before ‘83 to comment… but now I’m curious too
We beat Penn state at their place in the Kelly era— huge boost to the program…
I know others here have way more recall and in detail….
It’s coming I’m sure give it a little bit to marinade

Very interesting watch. About to look for 81 film. So we had Kelly and a pretty highly regarded class of recruits.

I’m going to look at the recruiting class and see what future UM greats are appearing and what type of freshman impact they made.

Hope you’re doing well.

The 81 team was insanely close to being undefeated btw.

Definitely revisit the CBS broadcasts of the 86 Oklahoma game with “in the Air Tonight “ in the intro. The 87 FSU game and Championship game, the 88 Michigan and LSU ESPN night game. The 89 Notre Dame is classic from CBS. CBS did great intros at the beginning.

As someone mentioned, the defensive lines in the 80s were insanely violent and dominant. Stubbs, Hawkins, Jerome, Maryland, Mark and Jimmie Jones. A joy to watch!!

Don't start BEFORE Schnelly - that's like starting with Custer's Last Stand.

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve seen the big games, I haven’t seen the 88 games you mentioned.

The 80 Beach Bowl was willd to watch. Kelly at QB but we had nothing really on either side of the ball to help him out athletically.

The play was so sloppy. Dropped passes, fumbles everywhere. Funny watching UM in the split back formation.

We won that game at state college after losing to FAMU as a FYI!

Look, you know you are dealing with an oldhead when we talk about split-backs, I-formation, WRs in 3-point stances, 5 DLs, QB under center, enormous shoulder pads, pants that went down to the knees AND had pads inside of them, etc.

Living in Orlando (but having moved from St. Louis), I started noticing the University of Miami and Ottis "OJ" Anderson in 1978 and 1979 (when he started playing for the St. Louis Cardinals football team). The problem was that we only got a few games in Orlando, there was no ESPN, and I had to read the game reports on Page 7 of the Orlando Sentinel sports page.

But it was those early games that got me interested in applying to UM, and by that time more games were being broadcast, between the 1983 National Championship and the Supreme Court case.

The golden age. What a time to be alive. Three rings while I was in school.

There is some bad football in this Beach Bowl game. So many dropped passes.

Kelly is fun to watch!

Pretty Wild!
Those early Schnelly days the offense was very tough to watch at times, even with Kelly. They really found their stride in '83. But the defenses were playing really well.
