OC thread

Couldn't disagree more. I'd argue this choice of OC is not only THE most important hire on Manny's staff, but will define his tenure here.

Why? Cause the HC is already a defensive guy and is going to retain and bring in even more defensive guys. Plenty of guys in those roles that can handle recruiting. This OC hire is basically going to have FULL AUTONOMY OVER EVERYTHING OFFENSIVE. I want a guy who eats, sleeps and lives play calling. THAT combined with Manny's defense SHOULD get us more wins.

And then THOSE WINS will do the recruiting for us. Sorry but to me that's not negotiable out of this OC hire. If it's a James Coley type I'll lose my ******* mind.
Well I don't won't Coley but the OC needs to be able to recruit, especially down here. This is where all the big dogs hunt

Not everyone is chasing a paycheck. The guy is obviously comfortable working with the head coach that he followed to TT.
But you don't know that, just like you don't know if he'd high tail it right out of TT to come to Miami, like a lot would

I didn't think he was terrible to be honest. His biggest weakness was in game adjustments. Seemed like defenses caught up to us in the second half of games and he couldn't adjust. If he's improved that part of his game, he was actually pretty good with his scripted stuff.
pass on Coley - you nailed it. Good scripts - stopped in 2nd half of almost every game. I 'memba that too well. pass

Let's post news and ideas here.

The name that intrigues me is Bill Bedenbaugh, co-OC Oklahoma. His name has been brought up before and it makes a ton of sense, especially now that we have a fresh start with Manny.

Lifelong Air Raid guy (played under Leach), has been around the best playcallers in the game, elite OL coach and evaluator of OL talent. He can help address our two biggest needs. The knock, and it's a big one, is that he's never called plays.

I concur with you. Oklahoma scored 34 against Alabama a few nights ago and their defense was below the average.

Imagine Bedenbaugh is our OC as we will play against the Tides in 2021.

I think him not calling plays in just a formality at this point. Tons of experience under elite offnesive minded people, I think he's ready. PLUS he'd give us an the plug we need on offensive linemen. OU had one of the best in the nation. Put that o line with our players in a modern offensive system? We'd kill it. Good one my friend. And here I was about to suggest James Coley...

Yep. It wasn't just the great QB's at OU, it was a great unit along the OL. Listen to the post game interview of the Bama DL and how they praised the OU OL. You can't play big boy football until you get an OL that plays that way.

Exactly. That offensive line adjusted after being stunned early, and kept Oklahoma in the game.

I've made the trenches a theme of multiple posts. Anyone who thinks we can run a tinkerbell offense into wide open spaces is a world class idiot. Unless our offensive linemen look the part and can stand up to defensive lines like Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State, we'll be nothing except a Houston-type program that wins plenty of high scoring games and can spring the occasional high profile upset, but is no threat to run the table or nearby.

Ohio State is the classic example recently of how significant the trenches are, along with overall manpower. The Buckeyes have played several lazy games per season. They not only get blown out once per season but they have multiple narrow escapes. And that lends to the simpleton week to week fans absurdly devaluing Ohio State: "Look at how they are playing! They stink!"

Obviously I've cleaned up the language from actual.

Then the stinking Buckeyes go out there and manhandle a highly rated team. Not surprising at all. Current form doesn't mean a **** thing compared to ability level and the overall priorities of the program. Ohio State is huge, strong and talented. They run into open spaces but from day one the emphasis is on creating those spaces via big strong linemen. That program pushed Alabama around several years ago in the semifinal game.

I'd like to resemble that team, instead of a blitz happy defense and cupcake spread offense. That type of team will thrill in September and be exposed later on.

You are delusional.

We can't just snap our fingers and recruit OL like those teams. Clemson didn't just suddenly start recruiting OL like them. Clemson ran what you would call a tinkerbell offense until they had built a track record of success that opened more recruiting doors for them. Only then have they started to introduce more pro-style concepts, but they still run a spread offense.

First thing's first, we need an offensive and defensive scheme that maximizes the attributes of our recruiting base (i.e., fast and fun). The success that creates will enhance our ability to recruit nationally where many more elite OL and DL can be found.

The post I responded to said Yost is a no brainer and it’s possible that we could land him. I just want to know what makes anyone think it’s possible. Is he an east coast or southern guy?

I guess I would say anything is possible until he says no lol

Please name the whole of lincoln riley staff and prior experience without Google. Ill wait
Just stating the facts, none have ever held the position before. Could be great or disastrous but no denying it would be on the job training.

Guess what happens if that OC recruits well but isn’t a good play caller ?

This whole staff gets fired in two years time and we’re in the same mess

Bro, I completely agree with you that the OC has to be a game changer with X's and Os, however, if he can't get the horses, it won't take us to a championship level. We will win some games but regardless of X's and Os, without the horses when we play the big dogs, we'll fall short. All of that to say we need both qualities in an OC, especially with green coaches and the south Florida landscape

He doesnt need to be in charge of get the horses . The horses follow wins , period . You’ve been following the south Florida scene long enough to know fickle these kids are and how bandwagon they can be

I tend to agree with this on the surface, but when I think of the fact that he showed such poor judgement as to bring Mark “yards don’t matter” D’Onofrio in to run his defense, I can’t say that I am comfortable with his decision making.

Well he has a large body of work as an OC that can be scrutinized more than a one off blunder. He would be coming to run the offense not be CEO.

I agree, just personally want both! But honestly I'm happy with anyone but Rorcht!

I was the first on the board to call for Bedenbaugh.

The playcalling angle is vastly overrated.
Coach X won a national championship as an OC, coached two Heisman candidates, has a decade of experience calling plays, then became a HC with one of the highest win percentages in CFB. With all that experience, that guy HAS to be a legendary playcaller, right? 3 guesses on the identity of coach X.

Bedenbaugh isn't going to accidentally call for a punt on 2nd down because he lacks playcalling experience. He is no cancer doctor like Dr. Thomas Brown, but he did co-design the Oklahoma offense with Riley. He knows what he is doing. He is also regarded as one of the best OL recruiters and coaches in CFB. The hire would instantly address the biggest problems (might have the qb of the future on the roster, hard to evaluate when defenses knew the plays).

As a bonus, I could see Hazelnuts warm back up to Miami if we ran an Oklahoma offense (aka the South Beach Spread), and then getting Hazelnuts and Fields together in a package deal.
