O-Line Good, RB's Good, Cannot Run the Ball. Explain it to Me.

Short of a 35 year old Nick Saban (with the life experience of a 65 year old Nick Saban) rocking up in Coral Gables to coach this football team I genuinely don't know what would make some of you happy.
I'm mostly joking. However, you have to admit the offense has greatly regressed and not just because TVD has gone to.
****. I suspect it's Mario getting involved but hope I'm wrong.

Also, there are a lot of coaches between Mario and Saban so chill on that.

I think the offence has regressed because the QB has thrown 7 INTs in his last 3 starts - whether he's injured, or can't read a zone defence I don't know, but he's dragging down everyone around him.

I'd genuinely just start Williams.

In 3 of our last 4 games we played some of the worst rushing defenses in college football. We amassed the lowest number of yards all season for two of them and 2nd lowest for the other.

Ga Tech ranks 132nd in rush defense.

Louisville - 227 yards
South Carolina St - 196
Mississippi - 299
Wake - 224
Bowling Green - 175
Miami - 165
BC - 308
UNC - 267

UVA ranks 97th in rush defense.

Tennessee - 287
James Madison - 167
Maryland - 119
North Carolina St - 139
BC - 203
William & Mary - 143
UNC - 143
Miami - 113

UNC ranks 87th in rush defense.

South Carolina - (-2)
Appalachian St - 219
Minnesota - 170
Pitt - 113
Syracuse - 92
Miami - 91
UVA - 228
Ga Tech - 348

Somebody explain this s*** to me. Because it looks real bad.
The RB are overrated on here. There was some advanced analytics posted last week, showed that the oline opens holes and rbs are not touched until yards downfield at one of the highest clips in nation. But another showed that our RB have one of the worst break tackle rates in nation also. So we have mediocre RB running behind a good oline but they cant make anyone miss. I would imagine Ajay Allen TD run might have been one of the few times all year a player has made a player miss one on one and it ended up in TD. We get no explosives from the run game so we have to GRIIIIIIIND out every thing and that actually excites our caveman so expect more of it. Loooong drives that you have to be efficient af.

They run defend they not scared of our weapons that’s why. We don’t have some elite eh that can house it that’s strong as well. Small guys that are fast get arm tackled. Need a beast back there

Parrish has been hurt for the last 2-3.
Fletcher hadn’t played since Temple.
Chaney missed action.
AJ missed the second half of UVA.

Easy to run when you have healthy backs. Hard to run when you don’t have any at 100%.

I haven’t rewatched uva. My guess is 20 was playing robber all game giving them 8 on 6 when we should be able to throw a deep pass or simple hitch for 5-7. Can’t recall any hitch and go for the year.

For all of you who think this is about scheme or some such other nonsense, just learn to count people in the box. If there are more defensive players than offensive players in the box, it is much harder to run.
So what to do when there are too many defensive players to run against? Pass the ball. BUT in our last 4 games we played with a true freshman QB and a guy who can’t read zone defenses and throws the ball to the other team; a lot. So until we can find an actual QB to lead this team, we will continue to have a hard time running the ball. This is true of every offense in college football.

BTW, we also won the last 2 games because by the end of the game, our Oline and RB’s had worn the other team down. This was true even against GTech.
In short, some of the unsuccessful runs early in the game will be successful later because we have such a deep pool of RB’s that we can always have someone fresh, and we have a great Oline.

Our running game is the absolute least of our worries

Teams are putting their DBs in a zone and everyone else in the box. It's hard to run against that. They know TVD won't use the middle, and when he goes long, it's a pick. it's working.

Our RBs are rarely healthy.

Our RBs are vastly overrated by this board.

We'd have more rushing yards (and soften up defenses) if TVD took the free 5-8 rushing yards teams are literally giving us on our designed passes. But he doesn't do that.

So, there's good moments, but rarely any consistency in the running game, or extended drives.

Watch the games. Teams cheating a safeties up on early downs and mixing in run blitzes. Then dropping 8-9 on third.

Dawson's playcalling has been a bit predictable, be it dawson or the need due to TVD.

Our best drive vs UVA was when we threw short/intermediate routes on first, again on second and manageable.

Definitely tough to run the ball when there are more defenders than blockers, plus a true freshman QB & a struggling bang-up TVD. Still, give Mario & OL credit for our ability to run ball late in wins against Clemson & UVA.

It’s not the passing game. Our biggest issue in the running game is that our backs aren’t explosive. The oline consistently opens holes and our backs get into the second level but none have the speed or ability to break tackles for plays that would result in long runs. These are the longest runs of each of our RBs:

Allen - 26 (against UVA)
Chaney - 26 (against Bethune)
Fletcher - 26 (against Miami of Ohio)
Parrish - 37 (against Miami of Ohio)

As @Genghis Cane stated already, we're going to need to take the unsexy stuff that's being handed to us, be patient, and then the defenses will be forced to adjust.

And see my post above related to it.

This times a million. Would be even worse if you look at longest runs vs. P5 teams.

Zero explosion or speed aside from CJ who they dont play. I miss the days of Cam, Homer, Walton, etc. who could house one anytime. And none of those names i just listed were elite at all but at least they had speed. Not even talking Miller or Duke...

I said this since yesterday and have been attacked and told that I don’t know what I’m talking about on multiple occasions.

It’s easy to see that this is a big part of the problem, but too many on this board refuse to see the truth that’s staring right at them.
