Now what ?

Coming into this game I said ten wins is what I expected , leaving the game nothing has changed. We went up in weight class and got smacked back down to where we came from. We‘re a light heavy weight that skipped cruiser weight . heavy weight and jumped to super heavyweight , then received the realistic result, knocked out with ease.

We faced a machine that has far better talent , coaching and culture. It’s a professional ran college program thats playing on a different level than anyone else. From the amount of money they spend in their program on down. That being said here’s what I saw.

Miami once again came out overwhelmed in a big moment , the staff and players couldn't handle the pressure of all the bright lights.

The tackling continues to be atrocious, just like last year we look lost in space.

We were very aggressive and brought 5, 6 and even seven guys but the blitzes are slow developing , obvious to everyone in the building because of zero disguise. Their qb was eating the pressures alive. They knew all the answers in pre snap.

Even though we ran more man we still didn’t allow our cb’s to use their hands like the talk had been, there was plenty of free release which will always put guys like Ivey at a disadvantage. Ts and Couch are easily the best cb’s.

Our front seven looked like a pac 12 defense versus Bama. We won’t be a big boy program until we get difference makers in the trenches.

Play calling on offense was atrocious early , another game where Lashlee came up small and coached scared. The slow developing runs leave me scratching my head, at this point he’s pretty good. Nothing more.

Going into this season I said the ol and de’s were my concern, well going forward I think the ol will be ok. They’re definitely better than last year. After Oluwaseun entered the game it was night and day difference, we had lanes and made pretty good pockets from the second quarter on. As for as Scaife goes , it’s over. He’s a backup and nothing more. As a whole the ol held up better than it did against some acc schools last year. I take that as one of the few positives.

I posted in spring Don was special, he’d ran away with the gig then he got hurt. He showed yesterday he’s a difference maker , he’s explosive and runs violent. Cam is what he is , a rotational guy, not a horse. I want to see more of Don ( we will), Rooster ( after suspension ) and eventually Brown. Cam has no lateral movement and goes down way too easy.

Wr’s were another positive , when given a chance they made plays , they were constantly running free in the secondary and we just couldn’t make them pay. Either the pocket broke down or king left early.

I love king but he’s limited as a passer. He still continues to cause some sacks scrambling , even if there’s a good pocket around him. He still has some of the same issues as last year.

Mallory still can’t block.

As for manny , we’re going into year three and that’s when I start coming to my full decision. What I know so far ? We show up flat most weeks, we don’t seem to be developing our recruits ,only the transfers seem to improve . We lack fundamentals and look like a badly coached team without discipline. At this point there’s no arguing this.

As I said earlier I still expect a positive season and this is a good team. There’s nobody we’ll face in the same stratosphere as Bama going forward , even Clemson. I saw enough of the o to think it’ll score a lot of points most weeks but will have issues against teams with better talent. So minus Clemson we’ll have the advantage on saturdays. If we can’t hit ten wins with this schedule there better be no extensions . That’ll make next year do or die.

The next few weeks will shed a good light on where manny and the program is headed , if we show up flat and uninspired like previous years after a loss then it’s safe to say we’re not improving , it’s just more of the same. If it’s the opposite then maybe things are going in the positive direction.

I try to be level headed and not too emotional on this stuff , that’s why I’m not taking too much from a game that nobody expected us to win, we were a 3 td dog. But I’m still not happy with things that continue to show up on Saturdays , issues we can’t seem to fix.

Now I’ll let everyone get back to losing their minds and talking Mannys replacement.
We went up in weight class but we saw the same deficiencies that we saw in years past! Regardless of opponent if you can’t block and tackle how can we claim or expect to winn10 games! We just lost games to Carolina, Okie State and Bama and we lost them in similar ways! Not to mention our coaching/scheme and game day adjustments are subpar.
The hard truth is this team is not materially better than the Vtech, NC, Pitt and certainly not better than Clemson. And Michigan State is gonna be a dog fight!

This, I still don't get why. We have IMO the best position coaches we have had in a while. They have all for the most part produce talent elsewhere, and have done it in D1 schools, or pro level.

Can it be our S&C coach? I know you mentioned Huff can get his weight up for whatever reason. That makes no sense to me.

Honestly, I can live with the fact we lost, Bama is just that **** good.

What bothers me is we got beaten up, lunch money stolen, and shorts yanked over our heads by the school bully on a big stage again.
By now we all should be used to getting curb stomped!

6-7 to 8-3 isn’t improving ? How about waiting to see if we 9-10 , maybe 11 games. That would be three straight years of improving. I know everyone has the answers now and is an expert after one season , I’m just crazy. I like to give a coach three years before I start deciding. I’ve seen a lot of great coaches struggle early and figure things out.

I agree with the record improvement. The overall position of the program is not. We struggled big time last year vs Virginia, VT, UAB, NCST.. all wins though

We are as far as the top as we were to Clemson in 2015 (58-0), to Clemson 2017 ACC game, to LSU 2018, then FIU/LA Tech debacle, to Clemson 2020 and rock bottom vs NC 2020.

we are still there and we still missing tackles, Enos took over Rhett body yesterday, and we keep letting opposite QB break records with ultra soft defense scheme…yes Young broke few Bama records yesterday for 1st game QB

Everyone talks the talent at Bama , but it’s far more than that. That culture and the business like approach of the program is insane. Just look at when a player does something dumb , they’re up three td’s yet his teammates holler at time or slap him on the helmet. When you have a culture like that the kids police the locker room . Miami was like that at one time, if you aren't carrying your weight or hurting the team you’d get your *** kicked. At Miami now a player messes up and he gets a hug or love from his teammates. Manny has built a fun culture vs a business like culture.

@Cribby my guy I hear you!

Here’s where the issues are:

Bad tackling is a coaching issue/flaw. There are no excuses for it.

playing older guys simply because they’re older is a coaching flaw. Coaches pick who goes out there

Starting a kid whose never done anything significant here like Cam Davis AND then running a game plan that features HIM OVER a 6th year sr. leading the team at QB is once again a coaching flaw.

These coaches in every big game we play literally hurt us more than they help. If we went out and actually played hard and fundamentally sound and ran a scheme that made sense and still lost then we’d know we weren’t ready. BUT WE NEVER go out with our best effort. Time and time again we hinder ourselves. I’ve never seen anything like it.

You mention big trench bullies- we FINALLY land the best DT in the nation and he gets no burn??? Once again, WE DONT EVEN TRY TO HELP OURSELVES.

ITS infuriating. This coaching staff makes you root for the other team to smash you.

This is not a ball control Offensive line even for the weak coastal, to reach 10 wins.

Agreed.
I thought Ed Reed would help in his GM role or w/e it's called, but it starts with the HC.
Feels like our players are intimidated by their opponent, and Bama players scared of their HC ripping them a new one regardless of the score.
I've seen fist bumps after drop passes, dancing in the sideline down big, celebrating TO down 30, giggling in team meetings, seniority take priority over talent, and so on.
That ish makes my blood boil. It's not getting the best out of your kids, or doing them any favors.

I look at it as 6-7, 8-3 and whats next? The hire was bad, we all knew that. But I’m not coming to a decision off of two years and bama , I want to see this year finish then I’ll be sure.

I said when we hired manny it was a lazy hire, a typical um hiring. Manny would now have to learn on the job and Miami isn’t a place where you do that.

Regardless of what happen going forward I’ll always say “ manny didn’t hire himself “. If he fails it’s merely a symptom of the disease.
Which is fair but we have all become experts in recognizing **** coaching and this has **** coaching written all over it. Maybe Manny surprises us, and regardless of any of our feelings he isn’t leaving mid season, so I’ll watch every game and drink heavily yet another fall.

@Cribby - how do you fix all of this or what would you do to build the culture or business like approach. We know things take time and you can’t just flip a script.

if you have a blank canvas and we’re construction a program TODAY - or at the end of the year. What would you do? I know it starts with money and investing in the approach but I’d love to hear your thoughts?

I want a HC who obsesses over winning rather than living in “paradise.”

Can you name them?

I get it but this team isn’t losing to App State. We are more talented than that Miami team.

On the other hand, if we do lose for whatever miraculous reason, Blake and Manny are done.

We had a 3rd string QB at USF playing some of those horror shows

Would love to see kids being more involved too, but who in the team can we point at for that. What ALPHA player figure can police that locker right now? You got players like Chantz Williams, he def. ain't the one. No disrespect and all because the kid can be really good, but we need someone who will F you up in the locker room, so you don't get your **** split in the game.

Maybe, James Williams, Kinchens, and LT can be it. Just something about those kids that feels diff. I'm hoping we see more of them going forward.

It's a marathon. Not a sprint.

Ivey and Scaife need to be relegated to 3rd team. Forever.

Stops with trying to make the ESPN highlight reels with big hits. Stick and wrap. Anyone who fails to do this should sit for the remainder of the game.

I will reserve judgment on the rest of the team until mid-season when we have a clearer vision of this team.

Just one man's opinion....

And still, Sabans nickname Grumpy is there for a reason. They were up by several scores when they had to call a timeout because someone didnt line up right. Saban picks that player out and chews him out right in front of everyone. Every great coach was great at making his presence felt so that players would go "I better do my job, I dont want to get an *** chewing".

Manny would never do that. Not when you are down or up. No chance. I havent seen him get upset at a player, once.
