Here’s a question. Which program was in more dire straits?

Miami 2011-2012 with a credible threat of an NCAA death penalty or potentially a multi year bowl ban and significant loss of scholarships

Florida State today

Not even close.
FSU.

Look at their record
Look at their head coach contract
Agree, not close. And it's because it's self-inflicted. They have no one to blame but themselves. We at least had an "excuse" with the potential sanctions. They're just bad. We also were bowl eligible every year and never remotely sniffed only 2 wins.

No matter what Al Golden would have us believe, there was no credible threat of a death penalty.

Multiple years of probation, scholarship losses, and bowl bans, yes.

Death penalty, no. There's a reason no school has received the death penalty since SMU.

It's a directional University of Texas school. A new campus. In the Permian Basin. ****, I think the only reason I even know the name is because of Friday Night Lights or maybe Landman.

West Texas. Almost New Mexico.

Oh, yes, big-time HS football program. Big rivals to Midland HS in "Friday Night Lights".

Agreed.
Al Golden has at least re shaped himself via coaching rehab. Shannon is long gone, but Norvell has been HC for 6 years? And everyone and their mother knows his buyout is the only reason you have a job, and nobody wants to play or work for you.
Even Golden and Shannon were most successfully then he was.

He has generational wealth. I got your point about compromising on the buyout to walk away. But 25% of 60M is 15M. Why give that up. It is guaranteed unless he pulls a Michigan HC or something similar or worse.

Off Topic, but these contracts are killing programs left and right. Imagine if Lane starts off slow at LSU. Matt Campbell was 72-55 overall and 50-40 in conference at Iowa State. Imagine if he does that at Penn State. They are a dead program for 10 years.. FSU is just leading the way where others will follow ... One can only hope.

FACTS. Kids still wanted to play for the U. No one wants to play for the Noles at this point.

Imagine what Shalala, Frenk and Blake James would have done if we had a 60M obligation in guaranteed coaching salaries. In that case, yes, we very well could have been worse off. But we owed Golden only a few million (and even then UM BOD belly ached about it) so were able to go grab Mark Richt. FSU in their wildest wet dreams will not be able to attract anyone remotely close to Richt for several years.

If I were Norvell, I would set a reminder on my phone to whack off every 2-3 hours so I wouldn't get tempted to mess around with a staffer
Agreed. He’s a terrible GM, can’t even be trusted to manage his own libido.

I have a feeling they will try getting Manny Diaz.
