I’m not here to defend Mark Richt’s coaching decisions or assistant coach hirings but I did find it odd that both of you guys say he was washed up and past retirement when we hired him.

He was 56 when Miami hired him.

Mario Cristobal is 56 now.

Now, Richt has had some health issues that would make it near impossible for him to keep coaching but at the time that wasn’t an issue.

I’m not here to defend Mark Richt’s coaching decisions or assistant coach hirings but I did find it odd that both of you guys say he was washed up and past retirement when we hired him.

He was 56 when Miami hired him.

Mario Cristobal is 56 now.

Now, Richt has had some health issues that would make it near impossible for him to keep coaching but at the time that wasn’t an issue.

I can only speak for me. I wasn’t referring to age, but rather his career trajectory. I felt as though time passed by Richt during the second half of his time at UGa. I thought of him as the SEC’s version of Big Game Bob Stoops (Oklahoma was in the Bog 12 at the time) who was always picked to win the conference/natty, but consistently came up short. If memory serves me, UGa’s fanbase wasn’t exactly sad to see him go. We had to pull Mario away from Oregon because he was winning.
 
I actually think FSU will do something similar to last year, pull out an early upset, maybe SMU. Something about that 2.5 line feels off, then they get their hopes up, then the wheels come completely off again. Good enough to justify Norvell for one more season, not good enough to change anything.

That's how I remember it going down as well. I don't want to come off as a hater with regard to Richt. Class act all the way around. At the same time, and contrary to a lot of CiS "logic", it is indeed possible to recognize that a great person was an above average coach, not a great coach, without being disrespectful. I don't believe I've said anything disrespectful or untrue about him. I've shared some unpopular opinions about him, but no lies or dissin'.

However, if you think about it...... Imagine they fire him, then have to pay his buyout. Who can they afford after that? They will end up over paying someone, who will, more than likely, flop as well. If it's someone like Jimbo, they'd really be over a barrel, because he won't be cheap. Whoever the next coach is will probably fail, and they'll really be set back to the days of being an all girl's school.
 
What if FSU has a catastrophic loss versus SMU at home? I’m talking about the kind of loss that accelerated the firing of Al Gluten (Clemson, 58-0). I mean at that point it would be so toxic up in north trailer town that they may not be able to overcome the tsunami of hate. Do we think he would be fired after something like that even though it’s only the second game of the season?

I just personally think they would have no choice. It’s a win-win for us either way. If he stays good for us, if they have to spend all that money on a buyout, good for us also.

After that lackluster opening performance the the vibe around that program is already almost back to what it was last year. If they get rolled up by SMU, followed by what’s sure to be a bad experience in Tuscaloosa, and they might have no choice but to roll Prison Mike out quick.

I think Norvell will do that ***** keep everything in front of us shell all year to avoid that from happening. No game will be close if the team is any kind of good. But I just don’t see any major blowouts of that proportion. They’ll try eating clock and limiting possessions. Slow the game down. All the limp **** type of ****.

I want to agree. That line is really weird. SMU is significantly worse on the road but FSU is just terrible. This team isn’t as good as last year’s team. Last year they were dropping 70 points and 600 yards against their cupcakes. I’m pretty sure when we played them last year they were a still a top 5 offense statistically. (Mostly due to lighting up two garbage teams and being in a shootout with Virginia). This team struggled to score against one of the worst FBS teams in the country. I just don’t see that explosive potential that they had at least at the beginning of the year last season.

Last year they opened up the playbook and went for style points to try and generate buzz. It worked but anyone paying attention knew it was fraudulent buzz. This year they did the opposite. Kept in vanilla. But it exposed the same issue. That team is mid at best and can’t out talent even the weakest of opponents.

Coach Richt IS a class act as a human being. Outstanding man. As an OC however he was a bit outdated in his thinking and approach to GAME PLANNING. I recall one interview in which he was questioned "Coach, you run the same 6 offensive plays all game long, why not get more creative?". His response "those 6 plays WORK if they are executed properly".

I recall going to Boston to the UM / BC game (BC won 27-14). Manny and Coach Richt almost came to blows. It was the worst offensive "game plan / execution" I had ever seen by Miami. That was THE GAME that effectively ended Coach Richt's tenure. He was "out of gas. His best game was by far the 2017 ND game. Epic.
 
mikey gets fired at some point this season no doubt.. they didn't bring in herman for no reason. the only game I want to see them win is against the gater.
