NIL Turns 5- Happy Birthday LOL -Did It Become What You Expected?

I pretty much envisioned a no holds barred ****show given that it's the NCAA but even I didn't think it would get this bad with transfers/free agency
 
I expected two things: 1. large market and more academically prestigious schools to become dominant in the space as the traditional good ole boy programs became strapped to compete at that scale 2. more of the Olympian athlete model where the players signed individually with brands and businesses.

I think the first has definitely happened and I think that’s why the Big 10 and schools like Miami and Texas Tech have emerged as big leaders in the space. Access to massive capital and opportunities that others can’t

The collectives and basically signing contracts with school entities was not what I thought, though. Thought it would be more individually based. But you play the game you’re in and I think we’ve done an amazing job.

Little Nicky Satan testified before congress crying that Alabama's NIL went from $2 million, to $7 million, to $10 million in the first three years.

At no point did he mention that the year it was $10 million (for 85 scholarship players), Saban's personal salary was $11.8 million. Not his staff in total, just him.

Oh the humanity.

I can agree with that, I think there will be huge adjustments and shrinkage across the board as that money that was on table is divvied up much differently. Wonder when Saban gonna talk about those coaches salaries, lol..

I can answer that last question - NEVER!

Here's the truth for me as it applies to being expected to pay for NIL as a fan/alum. I attended UM in the early 90's on loads of scholarship and grant monies, combined with a lot of loans, a little help from mom and dad, and I worked the entire time I was in school. It took me until I was 40 to pay the loans back, but I did. I donate sporadically as I see fit; sometimes giving to the Biology department and others I give directly to the athletic department/football program. The donations are not large, but they're not zero either. I have a couple kids in college and a wife. I need to take care of them and fund my/our retirement. Those things all come BEFORE any sort of generous gift I make to Canes Connection or the University directly. I don't write this because I deserve a trophy or recognition. I put it out there because I've seen people on this very board say things like "If you're not donating to Canes Connection, you're part of the problem." Those people are certainly entitled to their opinion, but I'm also entitled to mine.

Ok, imma go be an old man over here for a while and talk about things like 19¢ gasoline and how cigarettes used to cost 25¢ per pack back in the goood ole days. Maybe invite @JHallCanes over for a yell-at-the-ocean session. Actually, I wouldn't blame him if just pushed me off the cliff....

I appreciate the sentiment. But when the career earnings in football for 80% of these players ends when their eligibility ends, they have every incentive to maximize their present value. Just as it's the responsibility of companies to keep their valuable employees happy, who work at will and can leave at any time, it's up to the programs to keep their football players happy. JMHO.

OSU getting away with murder for years while people mad at the SEC. Massive alumni, massive revenue but when you even things out pound for pound we can ragdoll them in money

People probably don’t know how hard they went at Cantwell and they didn’t even make the finalists

Don't know how that went down but I expect he got offered more, knew he would still be behind Moten and Scott, and Dennis Smith and Mario refused to counter and promise more playing time. He had every right to leave IMO.

Davis probably isn't here if Donta doesn't bail during the playoff run.

I have no issue with guys making money, but the structure of transfers is the issue. These guys can dip whenever they want, or as I said in the initial post if their feelings are hurt.

Donta was getting meaningful snaps heading into the playoffs. Mario doesn't negotiate money during the season (he has made that very clear this offseason and he hammers that point to the guys when the season starts); Donta was going to see a pay raise due to the potential he showed during his true frosh season.

I don't care about Donta because we've upgraded, but used him as an example of the issues currently with the game and it isn't the money. I think these guys should maximize their potential earnings, but there should be reasonable regulations in place regarding the transfer window and the season calendar - these are the issues plagued the game not the money

And to that point, it was the moment the UM administration got proactive and stop reacting. They correctly saw that the facilities arms race was over and resources had to move into player acquisition and retention. They got in front of that and now have one of the best NIL programs out there. Some schools still wasting money trying to turn locker rooms into resorts.

Absolutely. I was not necessarily on board with Mario but seeing just the overall shift in commitment and direction of the program, I was thrilled

We’ve had bad coaches for sure but also in the past we sent them into gun fights with a butter knife. Would have taken a pure luck of the draw scenario to get us back into contention
