NIL Turns 5- Happy Birthday LOL -Did It Become What You Expected?

As June turned into July we have now hit five years since legal NIL is now in place. That came about because in June 2021 the NCAA versus Alston case went against them (it wasnt directly NIL but weakened the NCAA on that point at the same time), and interim rules were put into effect on July 1, 2021.

I thought NIL would mean the starting QB would get a local Ford dealership commercial, a regional restaurant sponsorship, and maybe a national ad if he became a superstar.

I don't think many of us envisioned donor-funded collectives writing seven-figure packages to help build rosters.

What's the biggest thing you got wrong about what NIL would become?

No, I thought it would be mostly local partnerships or national brands funding certain players at crazy levels to keep them around. I didn’t ever think we’d have to spend $350k on LB3 or CB4

You’d have to be pretty naive to not think loopholes would be used to go beyond the intent. Someone always tries to get the upper hand.

The whole move to ACC should have let people know where our head was at in regards to not invest and hope we get share of money off backs of teams who did invest, sad state of mind.. There was no justification to hire rookie coach off fired staff unless you give zero *****..

Anyway, I feel it is moving too slow and is reason cfb is in mess its in now, I have been all in on paying players their worth because they are ones who bang their heads against each other but these universities and higher ups want to scream poverty while funding these other sports that generate nothing.. How can there be billions on table, packed out stands with 100k in random towns, millions watching on tv but the actual product get nothing..

Let them get a piece of that pie they generate and not 20% either, I think fans actually believe the charade these higher up sell of no money while corches salaries went to moon 100 mil contracts guarenteed, they had soo much money they didnt know where to park it, (**** it redo the weight room again and add a slide and float tank!!) The discourse is even funnier on places like twitter, people really want to be put to sleep and believe the BS they were sold, no one complains about baseball players getting million dollar contract out of high school but attach a college to it and they didnt earn it!! Whaaaaaaaa

I too was hoping it would be players doing ads for car dealerships or signature signing events for cash. I didn't see collectives forming like they did.

Once I saw that there were literally no rules or regulations and the NCAA had less teeth than an infant, my expectations became nil, meaning I had no idea what would happen other than skyrocketing costs of staying relevant. It felt then that this would be a race to see who has the most money and that's pretty much exactly what it's become. I also thought there would be a massive trickle down effect resulting in higher costs of being a fan. I figured there would be a lot more solicitations for donations coming my way - and there have been. The part I didn't see was just how fast the roster payrolls would close in on NFL payrolls. There's still a massive gap, but it is closing. Yes, I'm aware that it's not fair to compare 85/105 man rosters to the NFL's 53 + practice squad (60-ish total). NFL is a tad over $300M for this coming season. Brian Smith mentioned on a pod recently that Texas A&M will be soon reaching the $100m mark. So yeah, there's still a big difference, but that gap is closing rapidly.

I'm fine with how NIL turned out; the issue has been the lack of regulation surrounding transfers. The money isn't the issue but how the player can just leave when his feelings get hurt.

I'm on board with what you're saying right up to the point where I am asked/expected to personally participate in paying for it. Those calling the shots conveniently have passed along all of the cost increases.

I assumed it would be the Wild West, but in line with most posters, I assumed it would be traditional marketing, as opposed to a collective wants to pay player X $250,000 per social media post to do 8 posts=$2 million.

But I’m thrilled it exists as players in the 2nd and 4th most popular American sports (CFB and Men’s college basketball) deserve to be paid their worth. This is capitalism/free market economics at its finest. Completely unregulated with the free market making the decision. I absolutely love free market capitalism.

I can agree with that, I think there will be huge adjustments and shrinkage across the board as that money that was on table is divvied up much differently. Wonder when Saban gonna talk about those coaches salaries, lol..

The math on revenue Sharing as kinda already been set at the pros. Give or take it’s around 50%.

Nowhere near that for CFB as of yet even with nil. The rumored highest paid budget is essentially at or less than the media deal alone that team gets
