And shut schools down weeks in advance. I understand people need to prepare. Wait a little closer. School and activities back on or nah?

No university wants to deal with the liability that would come with keeping kids on campus too long. Not worth it.

You also have kids who might need to get airfare to fly home and you need let them deal with that immediately, instead of waiting until the last minute and getting trapped in South Florida.

Individuals can wait as long as they want, but a university needs to get on the case faster than the rest and err on the side of caution.

They canceled evening classes twice on me because of a tropical storm. Problem was I didn't find out until I had already driven down. Advanced notice would have been nice.

As a parent of at least one UM student, and two at times, for the past 8 years, I can tell you that the University does NOT panic. They have been very calm about this one. Campus is still open with hours to public buildings adjusted for the safety of the employees.

Yes- it seems like the team is all there and have their regular schedule.

My son came home to NY late yesterday but only because most of his friends left. He lives off campus. He’s going back Tuesday.

OT but I have a bigger issue with public schools starting back like the second week of August. I thought this was America?! School shouldn't resume until after Labor Day and it should let out the first week of June at the latest.

Get back to this schedule and watch the precipitous decrease in school violence!

I remember Shalala mishandling Katrina and didn’t cancel classes until the outer bands were already whipping campus. I say better safe than sorry

They have to with all the days off they get...My granddaughters are off for teachers day,teacher/parent day, teacher don’t feel like showing up day, etc.
It’d still mandated they get 180 days in so they have to start early with all those days off..

Storm was never coming and I didn't prepare one bit. I know better than to contribute to the Home Depot, Gas station, or Grocery store stimulus.

I figured as much. If I'm a kid just give me a legit 3 month summer vacation as opposed to all the random nonsense. Actually give me that if I'm a teacher too.

I remember we started after Labor Day went to TG before we had Wednesday-Friday,2 weeks for Christmas then a week for spring and got out for the first of June. These kids are forever out of school which makes it hard for parents for childcare or for knowing what their kids are doing for the older ones

Exactly. I remember driving back to my place from campus in pre-hurricane/tropical storm winds after my class finished. Dodging tree limbs and palm fronds flying into the road with 50+ mph winds and a torrential downpour all because Shalala waited too long to cancel classes.
