Nebraska....

The more I think about our schedule, the better I think our year will be. Of course Golden is incompetent, but our team had the potential to be top 3 best teams in the nation last year. Talent has been lost, but consistency is the main problem. If our team plays well consistently(like they actually can), I really don't think Nebraska should be too much of a concern. Then again I was one of the optimistic people thinking we'd beat a depleted Louisville team in our opening game. We should have a team that will still surprise us how well they play against our first two opponents despite the talent gap. Nebraska will be the first real test, and I think we can run away with it at home.

I'm also probably the most positive, possibly in denial canes fan of all my own friends.

Has more to do with golden than anything. You can't trust that guy against any team with a pulse.
Was interesting to watch one of those U of Miami programs on ESPN.This segment talk about Miami being in a losing streak with
Butch Davis at the helm.It was described as a disaster until they beat UCLA who was ranked #2 in the nation. Then all of a sudden
he's a great coach.Perhaps win over Nebraska will be turning point.

Lol. That "UCLA-Type Game" was the FSU game last year. The turning point came and went.

Nebraska stunk on ice last year too and stomped us. Maybe the fear of a crappy team like Nebraska has more to do with our team than it does with them.

This year is going to be 1999. I swear.

Coaching upgrade. The clown they fired mocked Golden last year. They come into the game with a huge advantage there.

Oh, and we have to replace NFL WRs, RBs, TEs and OL who were thrashed by NU last year with pretty iffy players.

NU will be a **** of a lot better than say, UVA, and you know how well Golden does against his Daddy!

Uhm, you obviously don't remember the ENTIRE Butch Davis era. I have no idea where you've been, as this has been covered so many times - Butch suffered REAL sanctions - suffered REAL scholarship reductions, and it took a little time to actually build up his team. And did Butch ever build it up.

Stocked it so well, that as the last of Butch's players graduated - our team tanked, and has tanked to this day.

Golden hasn't won siht.

So it's basically just a case of some thinking we'll get Al Goldened.

Last I saw, we've been fairly decent at home under Golden and I still see no reason to fear anything about Nebraska. Sure, we have our own set of questions heading into the season, but this game is no more of a concern to me than any other should win opponent we face. I suspect we'll win this one.

Jeebus, you're kidding about that "fairly decent at home" comment, right?

Early in the season our team will get up for this game and beat a very average Nebraska team.If this was played late in the season when we already have 2-4 losses and nothing to play for then I could see Nebraska beating us as that has been the trend with Golden's teams quitting to close out the season.

Good at home under golden against who? You seem to throw that meaningless stat around like it means something but fail to recognize that golden fails miserable against most any team with a decent coach and players. See, that's the problem. Golden hasn't done anything to make one suggest he will fair well against even an unknown team like nebraska. Chances are nebraska has just as good or better players than Virginia has and golden can't seem to beat those guys consistently even when they suck.

Pitt says hi. That loss alone is enough to beat your argument. So inexcusable. But also, VT says hi as well.

I think this game will resemble the UF game a couple years ago. We'll win, we'll be happy about it, then we'll fold like a cheap tent in a drizzle. Oh, and Nebraska will lose 7 games, all by bigger margins than what we beat them by.

Agree with us winning this game meaning very little.

If we win, we will be 1 of many to beat them. And if we don't, the loss will not be "quality", IMO.

Many thought UL getting a whole new coaching staff, new QB, and their best players being injured would guarantee us a win last season. Didn't happen.

Yeah, and I was enjoying a hearty chuckle along those lines while watching the NFL draft last month. One Louisville guy after another was coming off the boards. I was remembering all the summaries on this forum, dismissing Louisville as nothing.

A year earlier Louisville was third in the country in yards allowed per play defensively, allowing only 4.2. As I posted at the time, and before we faced them last season, to manage that level over an entire season you need a ton of players and sustained intensity level. In short, you know what you are doing. It's hardly a flimsy stat. Yards per play is a great indicator, especially if you know how to evaluate it. There's an exponential difference between 4.2 level and where the Canes were last season, in the neighborhood of 4.8. It's similar to college basketball where the true clamp teams allow 62 points or lower while the semi-intense defensive teams don't mind giving up 64 or 65 or higher. The unsophisticated fan looks at it as not much difference, just like the geniuses who dismiss 6.9 yards per pass attempt as only a foot less per play than 7.2. In application, the gap is massive.

Anyway, Mike Riley is a very good coach. Far superior to Pelini, IMO. But Riley doesn't suffocate you with physical defense or blow you away with relentless offense. It's more of a balanced cerebral approach that looks great once he has everything in place. Might take a while to transfer to Nebraska. At Oregon State he's had some slow starts including embarrassing losses to lesser programs early in the season.

We shouldn't be outmatched in that game. Very similar to the series against Ohio State a few years ago, when we may have had a better team in the road game defeat than a year later, but the opponent is in transition at our joint, allowing opportunity to steal one against a name brand opponent.

Exactly. The only way this game means anything is if it's a win, AND we actually win a bunch of other games to go with it. Winning it, but losing 5 games, means nothing to me. I'm not going to be suckered by an early season win that is followed by a bunch of losses to scrubs. Don't get me wrong, I want us to pound Nebraska. Even if we do, though, it's just one game. Much like VT was just one game last year. Or NC was just one game. It's time Golden rolled out a team that plays more than 2-3 of those types of games a year. We need a season full of great effort, not a game or two.

20 and 8 at home suggests as much. It's not super impressive, but fairly decent seems a accurate.
