was the day the Shapiro story broke as the first days of fall camp in August of 2011 broke. His face and body language said it all, he ran right into a haymaker he didn't see coming( like Pacquiao vs Marquez last December). This wasn't the job he signed up for. I was talking about this with DMoney earlier, just judging by his reaction, there's no way he knew about this. Because if he did, I don't think he takes the job
He dealt with the suspensions going into the Maryland game, the emotion he showed after the Vatech loss in Blacksburg, I'll never forget and then the other hit piece by Charles Robinson actually tried to implicate him and Michael Barrow. The negative recruiting, the cloud of uncertainty, all that stuff.
But look at where UM is now. They are in the top ten( whether that sticks, we'll soon find out) but this guy has been more solid than the Rock of Gibraltar. I dare say he's been as important as Howard Schnellenberger was in his era as the UM coach. And through this whole ordeal, he actually became more committed to this program.
Again, we are blessed to have this guy as our CEO. The day he leaves( and I believe it will happen someday, unfortunately) will be a sad day for me as a die-hard Canes fan. But I'll thank him for what he's done for this program.
But right now he's a fighter who no longer has a broken hand, he's free to throw two-fisted combinations. This is now the job he wanted. The worst is over. He will be a better coach for this and UM will be a better institution after having gone through this fiasco. They are a better team/program than they were three years ago, and three years from now, they'll be a better team than they are now. I can't wait to see this program led by this Jersey guy, who led Temple out of the abyss and was the right man at the right time( to a degree, which I don't think anyone us really understood in December of 2010) to lead UM moving forward.
Alfred James Golden, thanks for being the same guy, every day( as he'd say)
