Really, really well done by Aaron Torres. Ton of good stuff in here. My favorite part:

Coker: I told our players this 'I played Nebraska since the Big XIII and we never did very well' so because of that, I had a lot of respect for them.

Curtis Johnson: He comes into the meeting before the bowl game, and he's nervous. He goes 'Nebraska, they're going to run the option, they're going to do this ...' Ed Reed stands up and says 'Coach, we're the new Nebraska. Don't worry about it. We got it.'

Long read but amazing article. The writer apparently spent 6 months on it. Very good stuff.

amazing article...attended every home game that year except Rutgers but went to penn state on the road and the rose bowl. brought back a lot of memories. what an amazing year to be a canes fan. to this day I appreciate having been fortunate enough to witness many of those wins in person.

Spectacular article... It provides great insight on why they were so **** awesome! I'm so jacked up right now I'm gonna walk around the Pentagon looking for someone to punch in the face...

I didn't have time so I zipped thru it but every bit I saw was great. Can't wait to kick back and chew on that article for a while.

Great read, thanks for posting. Heartbreaking to read those comments by Butch about regretting he left. How would this team look if Butch would have stuck around. Plus what amazing leadership that team had, Reed and Gonzalez were special

The day this happens is the day we will be on the road back to the top:

"Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m., no matter how hung-over you were, you are on the field. Granted, you didn't have to be there. At any other school a guy might show up at 8:05 with his shoes untied or something. Not at Miami. No, if you didn't show up at 7:55 ready to go, you got shunned. Nobody wants to talk to you, because you think you're so much bigger than the group. There were never any egos."

Butch Davis built it, set it up, and even the players admit - everything was on automatic for 2001.

Sure wish we could get him back.

Brown: (Our game-plan was) We gonna hit these motha****ers in the mouth, we're gonna take their heart. And that's exactly what we did.

The Hurricanes led 10-7 after the first quarter and 13-10 at halftime, before the **** broke in the second half. By the end of Miami's 37-20 victory, the Hurricanes left no doubt who the best team in Florida, and maybe all of college football was.

chills.

Man, I wanna go in somebody's front door and kick over their trash cans!

One thing I took from that article was that the players were the ones really pushing for Coker to become the head coach when Butch left speaking to the continuity carry over. Everyone, myself included hates the administration for the coaching decisions claiming that they do not care about the football program. Turned out they actually listened to the players on that one. I'll bet the same thing happened when the coaching search began after the Coker era.

Just out of curiosity did you want Butch fired back then before things started to turn around.

Not trying to start a war just want a honest answer because i'll admit after losing to Az State at home and ECU and a couple other losses I was wanting him fired before the 99 season began

"Curtis Johnson: Andreu Swasey said this all the time: The players were always around. It'd be Friday night, Saturday morning, they'd be around, they'd want to want watch more film, and we couldn't get rid of these guys for nothing. Their whole lives revolved around this little football team.""Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m., no matter how hung-over you were, you are on the field. Granted, you didn't have to be there. At any other school a guy might show up at 8:05 with his shoes untied or something. Not at Miami. No, if you didn't show up at 7:55 ready to go, you got shunned. These two quotes I feel sum up what's missing from our current teams.

Randy Shannon (defensive coordinator): It was just ... Boston. Even when I (coached) with Dennis Erickson, it was always the same. For some rhyme or reason, we couldn't figure it out.

Davis: (After an initial offer) I turned down Cleveland, and had every intention of finishing my college coaching career at Miami. I thought I'd be there another 10 years.

Davis: We'd been in contract negotiations with Miami. The money was done. It wasn't about the money. But I didn't think certain elements of the contract offer were fair.

Davis: I made that last home visit with Antrel and I'm pushing my agent 'Let's get this contract done.' What better statement for recruits in February, then the coach just signed a new contract, he's going to be here another four or five years. Strategically that's smart on my part, and a smart play on the university's part.

They (Miami) go in, say 'We've got to talk it over, we'll get back to you.

'Davis: Well lo and behold I get a call (after Miami says they'll get back to Davis), and it's (Browns GM) Carmen Policy. My contract negotiation has been going on for two-and-a-half months. And I'm sitting there looking at my wife like 'Are we being stupid?' The Browns were offering me a guaranteed contract at five years, at X amount of money, and we'd done everything at Miami to try and earn their trust, to try and earn their respect.

Davis broke down the details of his contract situation with Bruce Feldman here, but at the end of the day, his decision on 'NFL vs. Miami' never came down to money as much as pride and respect. The program had been hit with NCAA sanctions months after he arrived in 1995 (the sanctions had nothing to do with Davis or his coaching staff), yet he stuck it out and rebuilt the Hurricanes into a National Championship contender. Despite it, Davis felt he was being treated like a first-year coach, who needed to prove himself.

Portis: He walked into the locker room and says 'We tried to get a contract worked out and we didn't get it done.' He started crying, and we're all like 'What is he talking about?' Nobody really put two-and-two together that Coach Davis was leaving at the moment.

By the way, Foote had left and Shalala and Dee were the people handling Butch's contract. They are the reasons why Davis did not continue with Miami. Don't ever tell me Shalala did not **** up Miami football.

Watching that 4 year stretch of Cane football (2000-2003) , especially when there was a period of time where we NEVER thought we would be back on top again, is to me like the 4 year period of watching Lebron with the Heat. Im just glad I was alive to see it. Might not ever happen again but at least I can say I was around.

But this also gives us hope. Never forget when after we lost to FSU in 1997 47-0, Lee Corso said Miami would never get back to where they were ever again. (The sane Lee Corso at that) And we did it and proved him dead wrong. People are probably saying the same thing now. We can do it again..Starts with this season though..we gotta get on the road or we will be saying the same thing 5 years from now...then 10 years..then..
