Bubba McDowell played cornerback the majority of his UM career. His only time at safety came in 1988 - his sr campaign. He started the season at FS as the UM attempted to replace 2x all American Bennie Blades. He lasted there up until UM made changes after the ND loss. He was moved back to cb and true fr Charles Pharmes from Houston, Madison hs was inserted into the lineup at fs. The odd man out at cb was hitter Kenny BerryWas Bubba McDowell a safety or corner? He was very good and played for several years for Houston Oilers.
Bubba McDowell was no slouch, and neither was Ryan McNeil he played 10 years in the league.great list. Gotta find room for Bubba MacDowell. Easy to forget some because there's been so many.
How about Rushmore of QBs? lets see, we have 5 NC qbs, plus Heisman winner Vinny and Kelly. Geno has to be one with NC and The Trophy but we can't even cover our NC QBs. Those three great safeties make it hard to put a forth up there but QBs, or RBs too I guess both need more than one mountain. WR, would be easy... hum maybe note. Okay, Dline, that's it oh maybe not. TE's? nah. Okay we just have too many great players.
Reed is the best safety I’ve ever seen in my 41 years and there’s no second place. Dude literally was perfection , rarely made mistakes while always making huge plays
No way is Mcguire on this list over portis and duke. Fan of his but naahQB: Kelly / Kosar / Torretta / Dorsey
RB: Anderson / McGuire / James / McGahee
WR: E. Brown / Irving / Wayne / Johnson
TE: Smith / Franks / Shockey / Winslow
Ed was a 5th yr Sr in 01....and was without any doubt easily the Best Safety on the team....This is interesting considering he wasn't even the best S on the team his Sr. year.
McGuire shined in more Big games than Duke did....and just as many as Portis....No way is Mcguire on this list over portis and duke. Fan of his but naah

At no point was ST better then Reed, I’m not going to bash ST to make my point but I’ll just say he blew coverages quite a bit because he depended on his god given ability. Hence why he struggled early in his nfl career, that’s even mentioned in the documentary.
I know some of you get size and athletic ability confused with actual play. Even Belichik thinks he’s the goat. ST was a freak of nature as a safety but was NEVER a better player. At no point , college or pro.
ST was a great college player his last year and was on the way to being a great pro , he’d figured it out when he had passed.
Btw, You do know who the starting safeties were Reeds last year right?
Sean only played in Nickle situations in 01....Reed and Lewis were the starters...Ed is without question the best Safety in UM History...as well as the NFL...At no point was ST better then Reed, I’m not going to bash ST to make my point but I’ll just say he blew coverages quite a bit because he depended on his god given ability. Nobody Loves SeanTay like me....Nobody...Hence my SeanTay Tattoo....But Ed without Question is #1....Although Sean's 03 Season was my favorite.I hate this and try to stay away from it because ST has passed but it’s just facts. It annoys me when people say ST was better then ER because it’s so wrong i can’t stress it. It also takes away from how unreal and special Ed was. He’s not only the best safeties ever but one of the greatest football players to walk the earth.
I know your greatness increases when you pass but ST was only a great player one year at UM and wasn’t a great in the NFL. Imo he would’ve been considered elite in another few years but dude was still raw with the thinking portion of the position.
