Mt Rushmore of Canes Safeties

Daryl Wiliams had greta pro career as well and very solid UM days as well.....lot of tough calls but original 3 mentioned
are best .... my order S.Taylor E.Reed,.B.Blades

as long as those three are there that’s what matters...

Was Bubba McDowell a safety or corner? He was very good and played for several years for Houston Oilers.
Bubba McDowell played cornerback the majority of his UM career. His only time at safety came in 1988 - his sr campaign. He started the season at FS as the UM attempted to replace 2x all American Bennie Blades. He lasted there up until UM made changes after the ND loss. He was moved back to cb and true fr Charles Pharmes from Houston, Madison hs was inserted into the lineup at fs. The odd man out at cb was hitter Kenny Berry

Leonard 'Bubba' McDowell was a great special teams guy. I still remember his chase down of Sammie Smith in the 87 game vs FSU

How about Rushmore of QBs? lets see, we have 5 NC qbs, plus Heisman winner Vinny and Kelly. Geno has to be one with NC and The Trophy but we can't even cover our NC QBs. Those three great safeties make it hard to put a forth up there but QBs, or RBs too I guess both need more than one mountain. WR, would be easy... hum maybe note. Okay, Dline, that's it oh maybe not. TE's? nah. Okay we just have too many great players.

You could never get people to agree about our Mount Rushmore of positions. We’ve been so good and so bad that guys get overshadowed and other guys get highlighted bc of who was around them. You also have guys who played under terrible coaches and didn’t shine til they got to the league.

Reed is the best safety I’ve ever seen in my 41 years and there’s no second place. Dude literally was perfection , rarely made mistakes while always making huge plays

This is interesting considering he wasn't even the best S on the team his Sr. year.

QB: Kelly / Kosar / Torretta / Dorsey

RB: Anderson / McGuire / James / McGahee

WR: E. Brown / Irving / Wayne / Johnson

TE: Smith / Franks / Shockey / Winslow
No way is Mcguire on this list over portis and duke. Fan of his but naah

At no point was ST better than Reed, I’m not going to bash ST to make my point but I’ll just say he blew coverages quite a bit because he depended on his god given ability. Hence why he struggled early in his nfl career, that’s even mentioned in the documentary.

I know some of you get size and athletic ability confused with actual play. Even Belichik thinks he’s the goat. ST was a freak of nature as a safety but was NEVER a better player. At no point , college or pro.

ST was a great college player his last year and was on the way to being a great pro , he’d figured it out when he had passed.

Btw, You do know who the starting safeties were Reeds last year right?

belichick thinks Reed is the GOAT, but it was well known that had the redskins taken Winslow at 5 in 2004, Belichick had a massive offer on the table to move up to 6 with Detroit to take ST. (Of course Washington took ST and Detroit moved down a spot with Cleveland and ended up taking Roy Williams).

Ed Reed is probably the greatest safety of all time. The fact that Sean, who died at the age of 24, is mentioned in the same sentence as him is a testament to Sean’s ability and potential.

Unfortunately tragedy robbed the world of being able to see Sean in his prime.

It’s JJ. I don’t care about where he was picked. He was the heartbeat of that amazing run. A true leader.

Sean only played in Nickle situations in 01....Reed and Lewis were the starters...Ed is without question the best Safety in UM History...as well as the NFL...

I hate this and try to stay away from it because ST has passed but it’s just facts. It annoys me when people say ST was better than ER because it’s so wrong, i can’t stress it enough. It also takes away from how unreal and special Ed was. He’s not only the best safety ever but one of the greatest football players to walk the earth.

I know your greatness increases when you pass but ST was only a great player one year at UM and wasn’t a great in the NFL. Imo he would’ve been considered elite in another few years but dude was still raw with the thinking portion of the position.

So true, ST was a beast but took so many risks in coverage that he was lucky he had the athletic ability to recover

Ed is just a genius, never has there been a safety like him, that’s why Bill B respects him so much, knows how intelligent of a player he was
