Most explosive Miami rb ever?

I cried when Melvin Bratton went down in his last game, still made to the NFL but what could've been if he stayed healthy.

He may not be the top back but when Najeh was healthy... that dude was a freak. His size/speed combo was insane. Very explosive. he eventually moved to FB after injury. Mcgahee played some FB here aswell.

James Jackson had unreal acceleration. What the 97 game against OSU at giant stadium.

Lamar Miller has speed for days but if a defender breathed on him he fell down.

Lots of different skills being discussed and they deserve a broader question
explosiveness: McGahee
speed: Miller
vision: Portis
strength and endurance: Edge
pure running ability: gore

I like this approach.

Portis—Vision & patience that set him apart. He used those attributes to get in the open field and then showed his great speed.

McGahee—Size, power, and speed. If they didn’t get him by the time he made his first cut, it was over. Great stiff arm, too.

Edge—Size & athleticism. He was an effortless glider. He would eat up real estate before anyone knew what was happening.

Gore—Freakish natural ability. His freshman year, pre-injury he was ripping off 75+ yard runs. He was just moving differently than everyone else on the field.

Miller—Straight speed. Lacked power compared to others, but when he found a crease it was off to the races and he was gonna win that race.

I've never seen anything like Freshman year Frank Gore. Amazing how well he evolved and transformed his game after the injuries.

Lamar Miller could not be caught when he was in space. His teams were crap which is why so many overlook him, but he was the epitome of explosive. Just like early Gore, the field seems smaller for guys like that.

People sleep on Portis, but dude had a lot of long TD runs here and was also virtually impossible to get ahold of when he got by you.

It’s pretty incredible that The Duke is Miami’s all time leading rusher and he’s not even in people’s top 5. Shows how many disgusting backs came out of The U.

i didn’t see OJ Anderson play at UM to rank him.
To not put OJ on the Explosive UM RB list is a complete joke....he'd have been the Most Explosive if he had the luxury of playing on later UM teams...Watch his UM Highlights, and then tell me he shouldn't be on the list...

Davenport was the Best out of the Bunch before injury....Jesus H Christ, talk about a Load....and with Speed to burn...

Duke is in the conversation. But since you brought up the NFL (where it is much harder to be explosive), consider this:

Duke only has three career runs of 30 yards or more, with none over 50.

Miller has 14 such runs, with four over 50. This includes two 95+ yard TDs and an 80+ yard run.

Yeah - Duke reinvented his body his Junior year. He put on weight to gain durability, and sacrificed some of his speed. It worked. He was still great, and hasn't missed a game since - he's played in 93 straight games. But the big runs were gone. Those 50 yd runs became long 20 yd runs.

Still, Duke had 9 50 yd runs at Miami - but more than any other Miami RB I think his pro career has skewed how people remember his college career.

It's definitely not that, because Dalvin Cook looked like a super hero against us on that same turf.

Tutu Atwell looked like he was shot out of a cannon against us last year as well.
True but Cook was fast anywhere.

He’s in My top 5. Put him on some of them old Miami teams and look at what he possibly would do

Duke has had a good pro career for his role and the # of touches he gets, he’s a pretty productive player when given touches.

Duke's had a great pro career. I just think that since he's not an every down back and hasn't made many big yard plays in the NFL, people tend to forget that's absolutely who he was and what he did in College.

That and playing on god awful Browns teams that had a 4-44 record his first 3 years in the NFL.

He's a top 5 guy for me too but let's be honest, he would have been splitting carries with a lot of guys if he was playing on a more talented Miami team. Take his freshman year where he split time with Mike James. Still a great season but probably more what his numbers would have looked like if he was playing on a championship caliber Miami team. Still, he does get underrated by fans but not because of his pro career, but because the team wasn't very good. 2073 total yards from scrimmage and 13 TDs is still a pretty fantastic final season here.

I agree, Miller has been much more explosive in the NFL.

I wanted to see how these RB's stacked up against each other using the 30 yd / 50 yd splits. I used the starts of their NFL careers until they hit that 1,300/1,400 carry mark.

Gore (so many big plays) shocked me. Edge (lack of big plays) was a surprise. Miller, Portis & McGahee looked about what I expected.

This confirms that Frank Gore isn't human. Gore post 2 ACL's is still the most explosive Miami RB.

I've got Duke as UM's 6th and Miller as UM's 7th most "explosive" backs. I've got Miller as perhaps the fastest back in UM history.

My Case for Duke Part 2

Devin Hester at Miami - 40 Kick Returns & 41 Punt Returns. 81 total returns - 6 50+ yd returns
Duke Johnson at Miami - 41 Kick Returns & 0 Punt Returns. 41 total returns - 6 50+ yd returns

I'm not saying Duke's #1 and #6 sounds good to me. I just feel like Duke in the Top 5 or even Top 3 is a more legitimate case than people would think (in terms of what they did just at Miami, not NFL).

Hesters came in bigger games against more legit opponents than Duke....
