Miss St. replaces Diaz with Paul Rhodes

LOL. They got the better DC. I bet their fans are excited for the upgrade.

It was a darn good upgrade too.

What has Rhoads done that makes you think he's a good hire?

When he was just a DC, he was darn good. Really darn good.

His success at Pitt was some time ago. He might be the better hire in the long run, but I like that Richt went with someone with the potential to flourish with S Fla talent. To me it shows that he's here to win championships, but I know others view it differently.

He had a lot of success. He is a good DC and always was. I think Richt went with a guy he could get. I don't think he got the guy he truly wanted. I think Rhoads is a much better DC.

I think Diaz will improve from factors outside of his control (Coach Kul and/or better talent). I also think anyone would improve with those variables as well.

Paul Rhoads....are you ****ting me?

Dude was the DC at Pitt and Auburn for one year and has a 32-55 record as a head coach?

What does his HC W/L record have to do with it? He is ONLY coaching the D.
Agreed. We gonna talk about **** Lebeau's head coaching record if you want him for your defense?

I think Diaz can be successful here but Rhoades is a very nice hire.

I'm still sensing some saltiness in here...not sure why. We improved, they improved.

Miami talent made Randy Shannon look like a good DC.

Will do the same for Diaz.

And let's face it, Mississippi has been a more relevant program than us lately. I think we've done a decent job all things considered. A lot of addition by subtraction obviously.

I preferred Rhoads to Diaz, but I think Diaz is the better guy to play the attacking style people have been begging for.

And the gripes about the weakness of Diaz's defense are nit-picky, IMO. No defensive scheme is without flaw. But at least Diaz attempts to "force" the offense into a mistake, instead of "hoping and waiting" for a mistake.

And if Diaz can get the pressure he needs/wants from just the front 4, I suspect he'll be more selective with his blitz calls ... Likely making those calls more effective.

But good hire for Mullen.

He was a good DC, not is a good DC. He hasn't been a DC for the past 7 seasons, and the game has changed a lot over that time. As WTH posted, these guys have pretty similar resumes. Rhoads did a great job in the Big East and took the coveted Iowa St job. We'll see if he carries over that same level of success to the SEC.

Y'all just won't ever be satisfied

I am thankful for our staff

Or do you want to go back to the days of Patrick nix or no D
Let's be serious my gosh

A lot of them wanted Ed O. It's also the nature of fandom. Grass is always greener. There were times Alabama wanted Stoutland out. Same same with Cristobal.

We'll be more than fine with Diaz. What he wants to do is compatible with the type of kids Miami historically as access to in South Florida. They'll love the defense because it's definitely aggressive. I like Coach Kool working Diaz's defensive front. Great match.

Those are fair points, but I don't see what the big deal in recognizing someone like Rhodes being a very good coach because...he is!
As for Diaz, I am somewhat in the middle...I see some of the pro and con points that have been discussed and I will give him and all
the coaches the benefit of the doubt as all fans should at this point.
Anyways, lots of good coaches, something apparently lost on the perpetually menstruating colostomy bag who down-voted my previous
post.

Rhoades is a good defensive coach for sure.

They got a more proven coach no doubt.

Diaz is a young dude. Still lots to learn. But his energy and the fact that he is from Miami is what makes him a good hire for us. Well that and the fact that he runs arguably the most aggressive 4-3 man defense in power 5 conferences

I don't understand the disappointment with Diaz. Everyone wanted 43 and aggressive. We got the most aggressive dc

dad?

I'm actually curious about this so I checked on the stats I could. Some rough, on the surface comparisons:

Paul Rhoads 7 seasons at Pittsburgh as DC.

Average total defense: 40th
Average scoring defense: 36th
Turnovers forced: 57th

I can't find TFL or sacks going that far back. Not sure how that compares to Manny.

Manny Diaz 6 seasons as DC (Mid Tenn St, Miss St, Texas, La Tech)

Average total defense: 43rd
Average scoring defense: 41st
Turnovers forced: 40th

Why did you leave out Auburn (his last season as DC)?

Total Defense: 29th
Scoring Defense: 14th

Also, where do you get stats so old? I can't find them on the NCAA website.

You realize Auburn was 8th in total defense and 6th in scoring defense the year before. So Rhoads inherited a terrific defense the year he was at Auburn.

Diaz is definitely high risk and he needs to recruit very good players to run his defense. I do know this his Mississippi State's defense improved the year he took over in 2010. The Texas defensive was very solid his first year. Lots of discussion why the defense went south in 2012. Louisiana Tech's defense got much better. Mississippi State's defense improved in most categories this year.
