This thread got me looking back at our run.
From 1987--2005, we produced 6 HOFers, 3 soon to be HOFers (Wayne, AJ and Gore) + 2 guys who would surely have been if they hadn't died early (JB, ST). And 2 possibly could get there in Wilfork and Hester.
Beyond those guys, we produced 2 Heisman winners, a No. 1 overall pick, a Thorpe Award winner (Blades), Butkus, Nagurski and Bednarik award winner (Morgan), Outland Trophy winner (McKinnie), Mackey award winner (KWII), Tatum winner / unanimous AA (Rolle), a 10,000 yard nfl rusher (Portis) and one 8500 yard guy (McGahee), and that's not counting Olsen or Shockey, or a couple Heisman runners up /finalists and a bunch of first round picks.
It's really hard to explain that run and it biases this fan base's expectations a lot.
IMO with distance, it looks in retrospect more like culture culture culture than anything else. If we can't get that culture back, we can't get that type of outperformance back.
Looking back on the culture, the comment that stands out as a sign of the change was 'those guys are on scholarship, too.' Can't imagine Ed Reed saying that.
