In trying to analyze where we are as a program after Year 2 of the Richt Era , especially after the disappointment of 3 straight losses, I think it helps to understand where we were when MR took over in late 2015.
Our record from the 2006 season to 2015( 10 years) was 71-56. An average of 7 wins and 5.5 losses per year. To be generous lets call it an average of 7-5 EVERY year. Of course, not every year was 7-5. We had a 6-7( 2014), 6-6( 2011), and 5-7 ( 2007).
Think about that. TEN years of absolute mediocrity and incompetence. TEN years where HS players outside of South Florida were not hearing about us, seeing us on TV in big games. Ten years of negative recruiting. Ten years of irrelevance.
A Decade of Neglect. A Decade of Darkness.
What other top program has, in recent times, gone thru a decade of such mediocrity? ****, 2-3 seasons of 8-4 and 7-6 get AD's and staffs fired at most top programs.
And in those 10 years CFB changed, as it continues to change. Kids are willing to go to non- traditional programs to get playing time. More programs have come to SFL to recruit. I mean even Louisville has set up camp here. Louisville!! Every program in the country has emulated the Miami way and gone to speed, speed, speed.
So, while we spent 10 long years in the wilderness, other programs were staying strong, getting stronger, and further solidifying their foundation. Can you imagine FSU going thru a 10 year nightmare like we did? UF? Auburn, Bama,Ohio State?
My point is that this program that we all love was neglected for 10 years. Richt has had to resurrect a lot: a fan base that grew numb to mediocrity, a local recruiting base that was open territory for all poachers, a brand that was torn and tattered.
Am I pleased with the Pitt loss? Ummmm....no....my remote wishes we had won that game. The Clemson beat down? Nope, wish we had acquitted ourselves better. Wisconsin? Ughhh, shoulda won that.
But as impatient as I am as a Canes fan, i have to realize the absolute abyss that we fell into and when i do that, I have to think that right now, Miami is a walking miracle. A dormant, neglected program that is now, 2 years later, on the right track, and trending upwards.
Ten years of neglect takes time to fix.
Go Canes.
